The 24-year-old Leah Rye started singing and playing the piano at the age of six. She was inspired by, among others, Jordan Rakei and Radiohead. Since the age of eighteen she has been seriously involved with music. Two years ago, she graduated from the conservatory. Leah is fascinated by dreams. She likes to imagine herself in a surrealistic, mysterious world, somewhere between fantasy and reality. Every day she tries to catch her elusive thoughts. Her dream world is growing, yet she is constantly looking for something new.
Her debut single ‘The Wire’ was released in September 2019 and was played on 3FM and Radio Veronica, among others. This was followed by three independent singles, all in her dreamy style. London has great appeal to Leah. That’s why she went to London in February, where she toured completely solo, just before the lock down of the world. This inspired her, and so arose ‘Agrypnia‘, this is the medical name for insomnia. This single was launched on the 30th of October and balances between indie and jazz. ‘Agrypnia‘ invites you to dream away in these hectic times. The intro consists of piano sounds together with the clear, dreamy vocals of Leah. In the background there is a touch of melancholic music. The slightly electronic sounds are perfectly in balance with the whole, and occasionally give rise to slightly poppy influences. The music is well distributed over headphones. There are good contrasts between the lighter music, with the higher sounds and the somewhat ‘heavier’, lower sound. The volume differences in vocals and music are less, the lovely melody is pleasantly rippling on. It’s a pity that the end has been cut a little too soon.

‘Agrypnia‘ will be heard on her debut EP ‘Elusive’, which she produced herself. Because of the lockdown, about 95% has been recorded in her own living room. In recent years Leah has grown on several fronts, also as a dreamcatcher. She has come closer to her own dream-pop style, you can hear that on ‘Elusive’. She adds experimental sounds to her dreamy music. So also uses (sometimes large) contrasts between dark and light. Various guest musicians have collaborated on her EP, including guitarist Mart Tahapary and keyboard player Daniel van Loenen. If everything goes well, ‘Elusive’ will be released in the course of next spring. Let’s hope that 2021 will be a better year, so that Leah cannot ‘only’ release her EP, but also tour extensively. She is ready for it!

Leah Rye – Agrypnia
De 24-jarige Leah Rye begon op haar zesde met zingen en pianospelen. Ze raakte geïnspireerd door onder andere Jordan Rakei en Radiohead. Sinds haar achttiende is ze serieus met muziek bezig. Twee jaar geleden studeerde ze af aan het conservatorium. Leah is gefascineerd door dromen. Ze waant zich graag in een surrealistische, mysterieuze wereld, die ergens tussen fantasie en realiteit in zit. Elke dag probeert ze haar ongrijpbare gedachten te vangen. Haar droomwereld groeit, toch zoekt ze constant naar iets nieuws.
In september 2019 kwam debuutsingle ‘The Wire’ uit, deze werd gedraaid op onder andere 3FM en Radio Veronica. Hier na volgde nog drie op zichzelf staande singles, allemaal in haar dromerige stijl. London heeft grote aantrekkingskracht op Leah. Daarom ging ze in februari naar Londen, waar ze geheel solo toerde, dat was vlak voordat de wereld op slot ging. Hierdoor werd ze geïnspireerd, zo ontstond ‘Agrypnia’, dit is de medische naam voor slapeloosheid. Deze single werd op 30 oktober gelanceerd en balanceert tussen indie en jazz. ‘Agrypnia’ nodigt je uit om weg te dromen in deze hectische tijd. Het intro bestaat uit pianoklanken samen met de heldere, dromerige zang van Leah. Op de achtergrond is er een vleugje melancholieke muziek. De licht elektronische klanken zijn prima in balans met het geheel, en zorgen af en toe voor licht poppie invloeden. De muziek is prima verdeeld over koptelefoon. Er zijn goede contrasten tussen de lichtere muziek, met de hogere klanken en de wat ‘zwaardere’, lagere sound. De volume verschillen in zang en muziek zijn minder groot, de lieflijke melodie kabbelt aangenaam voort. Jammer dat het einde iets te vroeg is afgekapt. Gastmuzikanten voor deze single zijn: Bassist Erik Rademakers, gitarist Eelke Mastebroek en op synthesizer zijn dat David Thomaere en David Quakkelaar.

In de afgelopen jaren is Leah op diverse fronten gegroeid, ook als dromenvanger. Ze is dichter bij haar eigen dream-popstijl gekomen. Dat zal terug te horen zijn op ‘Elusive’, wat ongrijpbaar betekent. Aan haar dromerige muziek voegt ze experimentele geluiden toe, daarbij maakt ze gebruik van (soms grote) contrasten tussen donker en licht. Aan haar EP werkten diverse gastmuzikanten mee, onder andere gitarist Mart Tahapary en toetsenist Daniel van Loenen. Als alles mee zit, zal ‘Elusive’ in de loop van het volgend voorjaar uitkomen. Laten we hopen dat 2021 een beter jaar wordt, zodat Leah niet ‘alleen maar’ haar EP kan uitbrengen, maar dat ze ook op uitgebreide schaal kan gaan toeren. Ze is er klaar voor!
