‘Self-Education’ is the second solo instrumental album by multi-instrumentalist Theo van Niel Jr. The extraordinary ‘Introduction’ makes me curious about ‘Anxiety Express’. In this up-tempo track, blackjazz plays saxophonist Jørgen Munkeby. This forms a beautiful combination/alternation between the rock/metal. The atmosphere in ‘Sierra’ is very different, more summery. Again, there are unexpected twists and details. Theo’s very varied guitar playing forms the main part, regularly you hear several layers at once. Sometimes even slow and fast “mixed together”, but the balance remains. The sound is well spread over the headphones. In addition, the contrast between high and low tones is well audible. This comes out especially well in ‘On The Clock’. The songs doesn’t only contain detailed drumming (by Shane Gaalaas), bass and, of course, a nice amount of guitar. But several songs have enjoyable sounds/sampled elements. Like the sampled Glockenspiel at the start of ‘Ave Maria’. Most of the synth parts are programmed. ‘Self-Education’ is a beautifully complex album with a lot of diversity.

‘Self-Education’ is het tweede instrumentale soloalbum van multi-instrumentalist Theo van Niel Jr. Het bijzondere ‘Introduction’ maakt me nieuwsgierig naar ‘Anxiety Express’. In dit up-tempo nummer speelt blackjazz saxofonist Jørgen Munkeby . Dit vormt een mooie combinatie/afwisseling met de rock/metal. De sfeer in ‘Sierra’ is heel anders, meer zomers. Ook nu zijn er onverwachte wendingen en details. Het zeer gevarieerde gitaarspel van Theo vormt de hoofdrol, regelmatig hoor je diverse laagjes tegelijk. Soms zelfs langzaam en snel “door elkaar”, maar de balans blijft. Het geluid is goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Daarnaast is het contrast tussen hoge en lage tonen goed hoorbaar. Dat komt vooral mooi naar voren in ‘On The Clock’. De nummers bevatten niet alleen gedetailleerd drumwerk (door Shane Gaalaas), bas en natuurlijk lekker veel gitaar. Maar een aantal nummers heeft leuke geluidjes/gesampelde elementen. Zoals het gesampelde Glockenspiel aan de start van ‘Ave Maria’. Een groot deel van de synthesizer partijen is geprogrammeerd. ‘Self-Education’ is een mooi complex album met veel diversiteit.
