‘Spirals in the wider space’ is the fifth prog-rock album by Mindgames (Belgium). The songs are about humanity and the world. Is the urge to want to conquer the world a circle of recurring suffering? Is society becoming more individualistic or are we becoming more caring towards each other? In ‘Godlike Strangers’, among others, you can hear the beautiful interplay between electric and acoustic guitars. The minimalist part, and the jazzy elements of in ‘Who Are You Anyway?’ are beautiful. The high-pitched flute playing in ‘Economanico’ matches the rousing elements. The combination of piano sounds, ‘choral singing’ and a touch of sampling in ‘A Sharp Revolution’ is special.
The question of whether the world has improved remains unanswered in the final track. All songs are well constructed, but sometimes the transition from one track to the next is not perfect. Vocal parts are interspersed with extended instrumental pieces, which include cool bass grooves. Drum/percussion is mostly calm, or (partly) omitted, but always in service of it all. The (stacked) vocals and the music form a unity.

‘Spirals in the wider space’ is het vijfde prog-rock album van Mindgames (Belgie). De nummers gaan over de mensheid en de wereld. Is de drang om te wereld te willen veroveren een cirkel van terugkerend leed? Wordt de maatschappij individualistischer of gaan we meer rekening met elkaar houden? Onder andere in ‘Godlike Strangers’ hoor je de prachtige wisselwerkingen tussen elektrische en akoestische gitaren. Het minimalistisch deel, en de jazzy elementen van in ‘Who Are You Anyway?’ zijn mooi. Het hoge fluitspel in ‘Economanico’ past bij de opzwepende elementen. De combinatie van piano klanken, “koorzang” en een vleugje sampling in ‘A Sharp Revolution’ is bijzonder.
De vraag of de wereld verbeterd is, blijft in het laatste nummer onbeantwoord. Alle nummers zijn goed opgebouwd, maar soms verloopt de overgang van de ene naar de andere track niet perfect. Vocale delen worden afgewisseld met uitgebreide instrumentale stukken, waarin onder andere gave bas grooves te horen zijn. Drum/percussie is meestal kalm, of (deels) weggelaten, maar altijd in dienst van het geheel. De (gestapelde) zang en de muziek vormen een eenheid.
