The basis of ‘The Long Lost Songs’ are tapes of bluesy demos from some 30 years ago, played in by Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon) and Robert Soeterboek (The Cotton Soeterboek Band). Robert’s voice has a pleasantly mild rough rasp. The quality of the backing vocals are good, but occasionally a bit sweet in sound. The predictable timing of these takes away too much attention from the lead vocals at times. You notice that vocals and music during a live concert create a good atmosphere. Laidback tracks are interspersed with catchy tracks. Among other things, there’s a good amount of (“screaming”) guitar playing and a pleasant amount of Hammond. If sampling is added, it is always in service of the whole. CD2 contains mainly demos. During the instrumental demos, you discover that singing along to the music is not easy. However, the tracks are more accessible than Ayreon’s. The crossovers from prog metal to blues/hard rock are fine. Finally a good album where these two styles go hand in hand. ‘The Long Lost Songs’ will be released 17 May, you can still pre-order.

Lucassen & Soeterboek’s Plan Nine – The Long Lost Songs
De basis van ‘The Long Lost Songs’ zijn tapes met bluesy demo’s van zo’n 30 jaar geleden, ingespeeld door Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon) en Robert Soeterboek (The Cotton Soeterboek Band). De stem van Robert heeft een prettig licht ruw randje. De achtergrondzang is kwalitatief goed, maar af en toe wat zoet van klank. De voorspelbare timing hiervan haalt soms te veel aandacht weg van de leadzang. Je merkt dat zang en muziek tijdens een live concert voor een goede sfeerbeleving zorgen. Laidback tracks worden afgewisseld met pakkende tracks. Er is onder andere lekker veel (gillend) gitaarspel en aangenaam veel Hammond. Als er sampling is toegevoegd, is dit altijd in dienst van het geheel. Op cd2 staan voornamelijk demo’s. Tijdens de instrumentale demo’s kom je erachter dat meezingen op de muziek niet makkelijk is. Terwijl de tracks wel toegankelijker zijn dan die van Ayreon. De cross-overs van prog metal naar de blues/hard rock zijn prima. Eindelijk een goed album waarin deze twee stijlen hand in hand gaan. ‘The Long Lost Songs’ komt 17 mei uit, je kunt nog pre-orderen.
