‘Shelter’ is the sixth album by Norwegian band ‘Laughing Stock’. This album tells of a journey to ‘Shelter’. In this light, peaceful world, people (along with Shelter’s Master) live in harmony with nature. The title track has a peaceful atmosphere, the mysterious words and music (with violin playing) forming a whole. ‘Roots Go Deep’ has a mix of melancholy, acoustic guitar playing and rock. The balance between highs and lows (from the viola, among others) is very good. Flute playing lightens the austerity.
Tim Bowness is one of the guest musicians, he sings on the final track. His voice suits it throughout the song. In a few songs, the vocals sound distorted, together with the quiet music this gives a surreal atmosphere. Occasionally, my attention loosens for a moment. Vocals and the (minimalist) music are sometimes sugary, this is interspersed with (stoner) rock elements. The twists and turns between these are often intriguing, The sound is wonderfully spread over the headphones. All the time, the beautiful blend between the instruments stands out positively.

’Shelter’ is het zesde album van de Noorse band ‘Laughing Stock’. Dit album vertelt over een reis naar ‘Shelter’. In deze lichte, vredige wereld leeft men (samen met Shelter’s Master) in harmonie met de natuur. De titeltrack heeft een vredige sfeer, de mysterieuze woorden en muziek (met vioolspel) vormen één geheel. ‘Roots Go Deep’ heeft een mix van melancholie, akoestisch gitaarspel en rock. De balans tussen hoge en lage tonen (van onder andere de altviool) is zeer goed. Fluitspel maakt de soberheid wat luchtiger.
Tim Bowness is één van de gastmuzikanten, hij zingt in het laatste nummer. Zijn stem past in het geheel. In enkele nummers klinkt de zang vervormd, samen met de rustige muziek geeft dit een surrealistische sfeer. Af en toe verslapt mijn aandacht even. Zang en de (minimalistische) muziek zijn soms zoet, dit wordt afgewisseld met (stoner) rock elementen. De wendingen hiertussen zijn vaak intrigerend, Het geluid is bijzonder verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Steeds valt de mooie blend tussen de instrumenten positief op.
