Dragonknight is a new Finnish metal band founded by metal veterans.
They make accessible power metal with beautiful melodies, catchy rhythms, cool riffs and classical elements. Their music is for lovers of bands such as Blind Guardian and Sabaton.
The instrumental ‘Through Sea And Fire’ opens almost fairytale-like. The light classical music and choral vocals become more dramatic, but it misses just the warmth of a true cinematic allure. The vocal tracks that follow contain changes in tempo and volume, plus a fine balance of metal and classical elements. Both the lead vocals (Mikael Salo) and the stacked vocals are fine. But when the words ‘Majesty! General!’ in “The Imperator”, and the sword-sounds would have sounded rougher, the battle would have been “palpable”. Also in ‘Pirates, Bloody Pirates!’ some of the shout outs could have been a bit heavier, yet you can still feel the atmosphere. Most of these 11 songs are (mostly) rousing, only ‘Astarte Rise’ and ‘Return To Atlantis’( with its unexpected piano sounds) are calm. ‘Legions’ is a delightful debut, inviting you to turn up the volume. The sometimes slightly predictable structure makes it accessible.

Het instrumentale ‘Through Sea And Fire’ opent bijna sprookjesachtig. De licht klassieke muziek en de koorzang worden dramatischer, maar het mist net de warmte van een echte filmische allure. De vocale nummers die volgen bevatten wisselingen in tempo en volume, plus een prima verdeling van metal en klassieke elementen. Zowel de leadzang (Mikael Salo) als de gestapelde zang is prima. Maar als de woorden “Majesty! General!” in ‘The Imperator’, en de zwaard-geluiden ruiger hadden geklonken, was het gevecht “voelbaar” geweest. Ook in ‘Pirates, Bloody Pirates!’ hadden sommige uitroepen wat zwaarder gemogen, toch voel je de sfeer wel. De meeste van deze 11 nummers zijn (grotendeels) opzwepend, alleen ‘Astarte Rise’ en ‘Return To Atlantis’( met zijn onverwachte pianoklanken) zijn kalm. ‘Legions’ is een heerlijk debuut, dat uit nodigt om harder te zetten. De soms licht voorspelbare opbouw maakt het toegankelijk.
