After leaving Delain, singer Charlotte Wessel released some solo material. But with ‘The Obsession’, she takes her solo career to the next level. In songs that deal with anxiety and obsessive thoughts, among other things, lighter played and sung parts alternate with metal/heavy soundscapes. ‘Dopamine’ (feat. Simone Simons/Epica) is about the insomnia caused by the ‘depression drug’ SSRI. Yet this song sounds anything but depressing. The chaotic parts of ‘The Exorcism’ suit the subject of this heavier track. ‘Soulstice’ has a fine mix of darkness and sultryness. In ‘The Crying Room’, for instance, the light sounds of string instruments alternate with the dark, heavy metal. Charlotte’s voice forms a beautiful blend with Alissa White-Gluz’s in ‘Ode To The West Wind’. In the background, there are cool grunts. The catchy elements and sometimes distorted-sounding vocals give the tracks a contemporary sound. The volume difference between lighter parts and the metal could have been a bit bigger. ‘The Obsession’ is a richly filled, sometimes bombastic album.

Na het verlaten van Delain bracht zangeres Charlotte Wessel wat solo materiaal uit. Maar met ‘The Obsession’ brengt ze haar solo carrière naar een hoger level. In de nummers die onder ander over angst en obsessieve gedachten gaan, worden lichter gespeelde en gezongen delen afgewisseld met metal/zware soundscapes. ‘Dopamine’ (feat. Simone Simons/Epica) gaat over de gevoelloosheid die het “depressie medicijn” SSRI veroorzaakt. Toch klinkt dit nummer allesbehalve deprimerend. De chaotische delen van ‘The Exorcism’ passen bij het onderwerp van deze zwaardere track. ‘Soulstice’ heeft een prima mix van donker en zwoel. In bijvoorbeeld ‘The Crying Room’ worden de lichte klanken van strijkinstrumenten afgewisseld met de donkere, zware metal. De stem van Charlotte vormt in ‘Ode To The West Wind’ een mooie blend met die van Alissa White-Gluz. Op de achtergrond zijn er gave grunts. De catchy elementen en de soms vervormde klinkende zang zorgen voor een eigentijds geluid van de tracks. Het volumeverschil tussen lichtere delen en de metal had wat grote mogen zijn. ‘The Obsession’ is een rijk gevuld, soms bombastisch album.
