Although Thijs van Leer is already in his late 70’s, he still performs with his band Focus. Drummer Pierre van der Linden is even a few years older. Guitarist Menno Gootjes and bassist Udo Pannekeet have been playing in this old but still beloved band for a number of years. The audience at De Bosuil was mixed; it was certainly not “only” people over 60.
Focus 1
Without any show elements, Thijs was the first to appear on stage, followed almost immediately by the rest of the band. The audience was already silent before Thijs began his solo on the flute. He was beautifully lit for this. He then played the organ and sang the for Focus so characteristic wordless vocals, creating a somewhat church-like atmosphere. The band members began to play the well-known melody of “Focus 1.” The volume was slowly built up at first, only to decrease again later. The sudden changes in tempo were played flawlessly. There was no sign that Thijs was getting any older. Pierre proved that he can still play the drums incredibly well.
Eruption
After ‘House of the King’, Thijs spoke in a modest but heartfelt manner, announcing ‘Eruption’. Thijs and Menno started this epic song in a subdued tempo. Menno turned the tone and volume knobs on his guitar to create special sound effects. There was eye contact between the two to ensure they could play the sudden twist properly. Udo and Pierre now played along quickly and forte (loud). Several sudden changes in tempo, volume, and/or style followed. These complex changes were all played sublimely, even the musical rests were perfect. Thijs sometimes played the flute with one hand and the Hammond with the other, while at other times he sang. Menno was given plenty of space to showcase his gifted guitar playing. Meanwhile, Udo was also clearly audible with his 6-string bass. In the jazzy part, his fast but dynamic bass playing came into its own. During the up-tempo part, both Udo and Menno flew over their strings with lightning-fast fingers. Both men were rewarded with applause during the performance. Thijs came up from behind his Hammond to play the flute at the front of the stage, and he had no trouble at all with the fast flute playing. Accompanied by Udo, he sang his “fantasy lyrics.” He asked the audience to sing along with him, and they tried their best. All the band members enjoyed this, and the atmosphere on stage and in the hall became even better. Pierre treated the audience to a varied and dynamic solo, during which he was beautifully lit. The difference in pitch between the drums was clearly audible. The audience showed their appreciation with extra applause. The band played together to build up to the end of this song.
La Cathedrale De Strasbourg
Despite their modest performance, it was clear that the band members were enjoying themselves. At other subdued moments, such as during the compelling intro to “Focus 7,” the concentration on their faces was evident. Moreover, the passion was palpable, and the respectful audience remained interested.
Some of the fans hoped that the impressive ‘La Cathedrale De Strasbourg’ would be played, which happened in the second set. On the album ‘Hamburger Concerto’, this impressive song starts with piano playing. But during live shows, Thijs uses the Hammond, and Menno played with his eyes closed. Both played softly; you could almost hear a pin drop. Although Udo and Pierre did not have to play yet, you could see that they were one with the music. Thijs sang “Ding Dong, Ding Dong” a few times, and the volume of the music slowly increased. Then Thijs sang a few words in French. The instrumental piece was finger-licking good. The band slowly but surely played softer and softer, at one point playing pianissimo (very softly). The audience remained silent, which made this beautiful part even more special, partly due to Thijs’ low vocals.
Focus 3
The atmosphere changed immediately with the famous, catchy intro to “Harem Scarem.” Here, too, the complex changes were played flawlessly. After an uptempo piece, the tempo got slowy down. Udo played a varied, pleasantly long solo that included both high and low notes.
‘Hocus Pocus’, with its distinctive yodeling sounds, was of course a must. The audience yodeled along, and the band enjoyed it. Finally, ‘Focus 3’ was played sublimely.
When older musicians perform, it can sometimes be a case of faded glory, but that was absolutely not the case with Focus. The performance impressed, and there was deep respect for Thijs and Pierre, who still played fantastically despite their age. Menno and Udo’s qualities were also greatly appreciated, as was the chemistry between the band members.
De bezoekers van De Bosuil hadden diep respect voor Focus
Hoewel Thijs van Leer al achter in de 70 is, treedt hij nog steeds op met zijn band Focus. Drummer Pierre van der Linden is zelfs nog een paar jaar ouder. Gitarist Menno Gootjes en bassist Udo Pannekeet spelen al een aantal jaar mee in deze oude, maar nog steeds geliefde band. Het publiek in de Bosuil was gemêleerd, het waren zeker niet “alleen maar” zestig plussers.
Focus 1
Zonder show elementen verscheen Thijs als eerste op het podium, vrijwel direct gevolgd door de rest van de band. Het publiek was al stil nog voordat Thijs begon met een solo op de dwarsfluit. Hij werd hierbij mooi in het licht gezet. Vervolgens speelde hij orgel en zong hij de voor Focus zo kenmerkende woordeloze zang, de sfeer was een beetje kerkelijk. De bandleden begonnen de bekende melodie van ‘Focus 1’ te spelen. Het volume werd eerst langzaam opgebouwd, om later weer af te nemen. De plotselinge veranderingen in tempo werden foutloos gespeeld. Aan niks was te merken dat Thijs al een dagje ouder wordt. Pierre liet horen dat hij nog steeds geweldig goed kan drummen.
Eruption
Na ’House of the King’ nam Thijs op een bescheiden, maar hartelijke manier het woord: hij kondigde ‘Eruption’ aan. Thijs en Menno startte dit epische nummer ingetogen. Menno draaide aan de toon-en volume knoppen van zijn gitaar om zo de bijzondere geluidseffecten te creëren. Er was oogcontact tussen dit tweetal om de plotselinge twist goed te kunnen spelen. Udo en Pierre speelden nu snel en forte (luid) mee. Er volgden nog diverse plotselinge wendingen in tempo, volume en/of stijlen. Deze complexe veranderingen werden allemaal subliem gespeeld, zelfs de rusten verliepen perfect. Thijs speelde soms fluit met de ene hand, en tegelijkertijd orgel met de andere, op andere momenten zong hij. Menno kreeg alle ruimte om zijn gave gitaarspel te laten horen. Ondertussen was ook Udo goed hoorbaar met zijn 6-snarige bas. In het jazzy deel kwam zijn snelle, maar dynamische basspel extra goed tot zijn recht. Tijdens het up-tempo deel vlogen zowel Udo als Menno met hun vingers razendsnel over hun snaren heen. Beide mannen werden beloond met een tussentijds applaus. Thijs kwam achter zijn orgel vandaan om vooraan op het podium fluit te spelen, ook met het snelle fluitspel had hij geen enkele moeite. Onder begeleiding van Udo, zong hij zijn “fantasie teksten”. Hij vroeg het publiek om hem na te zingen, dat probeerde men zo goed mogelijk. Hier genoten alle bandleden van, de sfeer op het podium en in de zaal werd nòg beter. Pierre trakteerde op een gevarieerde en dynamische solo, waarbij hij mooi in het licht gezet werd. Het verschil in toonhoogte tussen de drums was goed te horen. Het publiek liet hun waardering horen door een extra applaus. De band speelde samen de opbouw naar het einde van dit nummer.
La Cathedrale De Strasbourg
Ondanks hun bescheiden performance was het te zien dat de bandleden genoten. Op andere ingetogen momenten, bijvoorbeeld tijdens het meeslepende intro van ‘Focus 7’ was de concentratie op de gezichten te zien. Bovendien was de passie voelbaar, het respectvolle publiek bleef geboeid luisteren.
Een deel van de fans hoopte dat het indrukwekkende ’La Cathedrale De Strasbourg’ gespeeld zou worden, dat gebeurde in de tweede set. Op het album ‘Hamburger Concerto’ start dit indrukwekkende nummer met pianospel. Maar tijdens live shows gebruikt Thijs de Hammond, Menno speelde met gesloten ogen. Beiden speelden zacht, je kon bijna een speld horen vallen. Hoewel Udo en Pierre nog niet mee hoefden te spelen, zag je dat ze één waren met de muziek. Thijs zong een paar keer “Ding Dong, Ding Dong”, het volume van de muziek ging langzaam omhoog. Daarna zong Thijs enkele woorden in het Frans. Het instrumentale stuk was om je vingers bij af te likken. De band speelde langzaam maar zeker steeds zachter, op een gegeven moment speelden ze pianissimo (zeer zacht). Vanuit de zaal bleef het stil, waardoor dit prachtige deel, mede door de lage zang van Thijs nòg specialer werd.
Focus 3
De sfeer veranderde meteen bij het bekende, pakkende intro van ‘Harem Scarem’. Ook hier werden de complexe veranderingen foutloos gespeeld. Na een uptempo stuk, gingen tempo en toonsoort langzaam omlaag. Udo speelde een gevarieerde, aangenaam lange solo waarin zowel hoge als lage tonen zaten.
‘Hocus Pocus’, met de markante jodel klanken, mocht natuurlijk niet ontbreken. Het publiek jodelde mee, de band genoot. Tot slot werd ‘Focus 3’ subliem gespeeld.
Als oudere muzikanten optreden is het soms vergane glorie, maar daar was bij Focus absoluut géén sprake van. Het optreden maakte indruk, men had diep respect voor Thijs en Pierre die ondanks hun hoge leeftijd nog fantastisch speelden. Ook de kwaliteiten van Menno en Udo werden, net als de chemie tussen de bandleden zeer gewaardeerd.
