The Ronnie James Dio Memorial Concert had been postponed several times by Covid, but finally this concert could take place on the cold winter evening of December 14. This tribute consists of the Dutch top of the hard rock/metal circuit. The lights in De Bosuil (Weert) dimmed, keyboardist Martijn Spierenburg (Within Temptation) came on first. Of course, Rainbow fans recognized the intro to ‘Tarot Woman’.
Martijn was standing in the light, the rest of the stage was still dark. Almost unnoticed the other band members appeared.
Frontman John JayCee Cuijpers (a.o. Ayreon, Praying Mantis) sang like fans are used to: with a lot of power and expression. Lisette van den Berg (Scarlet Stories, Ayreon) had the backing vocals. Both guitarist Menno Gootjes (Focus and Black Nazareth) and Within Temptation guitarist Ruud Jolie showed great guitar playing. Non-stop followed ‘A Light in the Black’. Bassist Johan van Stratum is known from bands like VUUR and Ayreon, he was positioned a bit more to the back, but he could be heard well. Textures drummer Stef Broks and Martijn both played on a heightened stage, so they too were clearly visible. During an up tempo piece, Menno walked to the front of the stage, his fingers “flew over the strings”. Rightfully, he received interim applause. Although John has considerable power in his voice, the music was sometimes on the loud side in relation to his voice.
We Rock
Before the start of the Dio song ‘We Rock’ John asked, “Are you ready to roooock?” Of course ; because that’s what people came for! John knows how to perform, he literally did it from head to toe. Even in the moments when he stood more quietly, you could feel and see the expression on his face. Ruud, Johan and Menno started the Black Sabbath song ‘Children of the Sea’. Martijn and Stef joined in later. This became a very nice duet, the voices of John and Lisette formed a beautiful combination. But Lisette was also very good solo! Her way of performing was a mix of solid and elegant.
Ruud and Johan played wirelessly, yet they did not move often or far from their places, which made this performance look partly less energetic. Their way of playing did not suffer, which could be heard for example in Ruud’s cool guitar playing in ‘Lady of the Lake’.
Egypt
Martijn played the first notes of the Dio song ‘Egypt’. Again John’s inspiration stood out. Lisette had a substantial part in the vocals. In the subdued bit, Stef kept his drumsticks still for a moment, then he let the cymbals “ring” softly. As soon as he could again he played forcefully. Many songs were played nonstop. When John said something between songs, it was usually short but powerful. For example, he said,” You know this one,” after which the quiet intro to ‘Catch the Rainbow’ sounded. Fans respectfully sang along with John’s sensitive vocals. The setlist of this memorial concert was well chosen, delicate songs were interspersed with up-tempo and/or hard rock songs.
There was much to be seen during this energetic performance: Martijn sometimes had a smile from ear to ear. Menno regularly went to the foreground. His fingers flew over the strings, he held the neck of his guitar in the air several times, he visibly enjoyed himself. During the instrumental parts of the hard rock songs, Lisette was regularly head banging. The band members were well in tune with each other, yet there were a few flaws. That can happen, since this was the first performance in this tour.
Holy Diver
Although there were some points of improvement, there were also surprises in this show. One of those was a modest version of ‘Holy Diver’, which John dedicated to his son. Menno played an acoustic guitar, accompanied by a touch of keyboards. The rough edge on John’s voice made his emotion stand out even more. Ruud played compellingly on his electric guitar. The quiet Roger Glover song ‘Sitting in a Dream’ matched this wonderfully. Now it was Lisette who performed this song beautifully in a subdued but impressive way. The light that was flashy in the hard rock songs was fittingly calm here. This was followed by power songs like ‘Heaven and Hell’, where Johan “swished” his dreads very briefly. People roared along loudly with “Ohohoho,” some fans sang along with everything at the fullest. In ‘Gates of Babylon’ Ruud and Menno alternately came to the fore with their guitar playing. In ‘Stargazer’ John revealed impressive vocal range. As the band noticed that it was all going well, everyone became more exuberant in terms of performance that had an interaction with the audience.
After this “last” song there was an immediate yell for more. John shouted, “Wanna hear more?” Fans who sang along before were now enthusiastically roaring along with ‘Kill the King’. You felt and saw the vibe change both in the venue and on stage. The band members were and remained fully “up to speed.”
‘Long Live Rock’n Roll’ was the fourth and final song of the encore. John engaged the fans in his singing, many went wild. This was a sublime ending of a beautiful tribute to Ronnie James Dio that lasted over two hours. Through a tape sounded ‘Love is all’ by Roger Glover, with a bow the band said goodbye. The party atmosphere remained for a while, even when Menno and Martijn left the stage last, while dancing.

Het Ronnie James Dio Memorial Concert was door Covid al diverse keren uitgesteld, maar eindelijk kon dit concert op de frisse winteravond van 14 december doorgaan. Deze tribute bestaat uit de Nederlandse top van het hardrock/metal circuit. De lichten in De Bosuil (Weert) doofden, toetsenist Martijn Spierenburg (Within Temptation) kwam als eerste op. Rainbow fans herkenden het intro van ‘Tarot Woman’ natuurlijk. Martijn stond in het licht, verder was het podium nog donker. Bijna onopgemerkt verschenen de andere bandleden.

Zowel gitarist Menno Gootjes (Focus en Black Nazareth) als Within Temptation gitarist Ruud Jolie lieten prima gitaarspel horen. Non stop volgende ‘A Light in the Black’. Bassist Johan van Stratum is bekend van bands als VUUR en Ayreon, hij stond wat meer naar achter opgesteld, maar hij was goed te horen. Textures drummer Stef Broks en Martijn speelden beiden op een verhoogd podium, waardoor ook zij goed zichtbaar waren. Menno liep tijdens een up tempo stuk naar het voorkant van het podium, zijn vingers vlogen over de snaren. Terecht kreeg hij tussentijds applaus. Hoewel John flinke power op zijn stem heeft, was de muziek soms aan de luide kant ten op zichte van zijn stem.
We Rock
Voor aanvang van het Dio nummer ‘We Rock’ vroeg John: “Are you ready to roooock?” Natuurlijk; want daar waren de mensen voor gekomen! John weet hoe hij moet performen, dat deed hij letterlijk van top tot teen. Ook op de momenten dat hij stiller stond, voelde en zag je de expressie op zijn gezicht. Ruud, Johan en Menno startte het Black Sabbath nummer ‘Children of the Sea’. Martijn en Stef vielen later bij. Dit werd een heel mooi duet, de stemmen van John en Lisette vormde een mooie combinatie. Maar ook solo was Lisette natuurlijk erg goed! Haar manier van performen was een mix van stoer en elegant.
Ruud en Johan speelden wireless, toch kwamen ze niet vaak of ver van hun plaats af, waardoor dit optreden deels minder energiek oogde. Hun manier van spelen leed er niet onder, dat was bijvoorbeeld te horen in het gave gitaarspel van Ruud in ‘Lady of the Lake’.
Egypt
Martijn speelde de eerste tonen van het Dio nummer ‘Egypt’. Weer viel de bezieling van John op. Lisette had een flink aandeel in de zang. In het ingetogen stukje hield Stef zijn drumstokken even stil, daarna liet hij de cimbalen zacht “rinkelen”. Zodra het weer kon speelde hij krachtig. Veel nummers werden non stop gespeeld. Als John tussen de nummers door iets zei, was het meestal kort maar krachtig. Zo zei hij bijvoorbeeld:” You know this one”, waarna het rustige intro van ‘Catch the Rainbow’ klonk. Fans zongen respectvol mee met de gevoelige zang van John. De setlist van dit memorial concert was goed gekozen, gevoelige nummers werden afgewisseld met up-tempo en/of hard rock nummers.
Er viel genoeg te zien tijdens dit energieke optreden: Martijn had soms een smile van oor tot oor. Menno zocht regelmatig de voorgrond op. Zijn vingers gingen vliegensvlug over de snaren, de hals van zijn gitaar hield hij diverse keren in de lucht, hij genoot zichtbaar. Tijdens de instrumentale stukken van de hard rock nummers was Lisette regelmatig aan het headbangen. De bandleden waren goed op elkaar ingespeeld, toch zaten er enkele foutjes in. Dat kan gebeuren, want dit was het eerste optreden uit deze reeks.
Holy Diver
Hoewel er wat verbeter puntjes in zaten, zaten er ook verrassingen in dit optreden. Één ervan was een ingetogen versie ‘Holy Diver’, wat John opdroeg aan zijn zoon. Menno speelde op een akoestische gitaar, begeleid door een vleugje toetsen. Door het ruwe randje op Johns stem kwam zijn emotie nog beter uit. Ruud speelde meeslepend op zijn elektrische gitaar. Het rustige Roger Glover nummer ‘Sitting in a Dream’ sloot hier mooi bij aan. Nu was het Lisette die op ingetogen, maar indrukwekkende manier dit nummer prachtig vertolkte. Het licht dat in de hard rock nummers flitsend was, was hier passend rustig. Daarna volgend power nummers zoals ‘Heaven and Hell’, waar Johan zijn dreads heel even liet “zwiepen”. Men brulde luidkeels mee met “Ohohoho”, enkele fans zongen alles uit volle borst mee. In ‘Gates of Babylon’ kwamen Ruud en Menno afwisselend op de voorgrond met hun gitaarspel. In ‘Stargazer’ liet John indrukwekkende vocale uithalen horen. Nu de band merkte dat het allemaal goed liep, werd iedereen wat uitbundiger qua performance dat had een wisselwerking met het publiek.
Na dit “laatste” nummer werd er meteen geroepen om meer. John riep: ”Wanna hear more?” Fans die eerder meezongen, brulden nu enthousiast mee met ‘Kill the King’. Je voelde en zag de vibe veranderen zowel in de zaal als op de bühne. De bandleden waren en bleven volledig “op stoom”.
‘Long Live Rock’n Roll’ was het vierde en laatste nummer van de toegift. John betrok de fans in zijn zang, menigeen ging uit zijn dak. Dit was een sublieme afsluiter van een mooi eerbetoon aan Ronnie James Dio, dat ruim twee uur duurde. Via een tape klonk ‘Love is all’ van Roger Glover, met een buiging nam de band afscheid. De feeststemming bleef nog even, ook toen Menno en Martijn al dansend als laatste het podium verlieten.
