It was uncertain for a while whether the Gary Moore Tribute XL on 13 September in De Bosuil (Weert) would take place. Because the day before, Go_A’s concert was unexpectedly cancelled. This was due to an unsafe situation arising from construction work on the venue. They worked hard to find a temporary solution, Friday afternoon it became clear that De Bosuil could stay open!
The regular band members were at De Bosuil much more often, usually with the Remember Phil and Gary show. But Friday the 13th, the XL formation of the Gary Moore tribute band was here. This included horns (Jack Geerlings, Christel Jacobs and Lennard Gilissen) and backing vocalists (Sanne Heuijerjans and Esther van Riesen). The moment the lights in the hall dimmed, De Bosuil was pleasantly crowded. Jan Willem Ketelaers yelled, ‘Are you ready?’ He had the lead vocals in the opening song ‘After the war’. Backing vocals were not only provided by Sanne and Esther, but also by singer Pascal Remans and guitarist Marcel Coenen.
Over the hills and far away
In ‘Wishing Well’, Pascal had the lead vocals, which he sang with great expression. The horn section was a valuable addition. Bassist Frank de Groot played fanatically and expressively. Guitarist Freek Gielen was a bit more subdued, but he too played very well. The tightly played drum intro (by Hans In T Zandt) betrayed that ‘Over the hills and far away’ was being played. This was one of the songs in which he also did the backing vocals. The instrumental pieces with Marcel’s guitar playing were fabulous. Before the start of ‘Shapes of things’, Pascal told us that the band was happy that this concert could go on after all. This was also true for the audience, of course. Because from the very first song, you could feel that this was going to be a good concert. That feeling was right, because the musicians played well, and there was plenty of interaction between the band members. You could feel the emotion not only in vocals, but also in the music.
‘King of the Blues’
Although keyboardist Rene Kroon stood on a rise, his tablet made him less visible. In the more heavy songs, his part was not consistently easy to hear. But his beautiful part came out well in ‘King of the Blues’. Again, the horn section was a very good addition. During an instrumental piece, Marcel stood opposite to saxophonist Lennard. Their collaboration was lovely to see. The horns stayed for ‘Cold day in hell’. The bass is important in Gary’s music, so also in this mellow song, which Jan Willem sang with emotion. The lighting here was suitably calm. Freek’s performance was subdued, but again his part was certainly important. Marcel praised him, deservedly so. This song touched many a heart.
Parisienne walkways
The second set started with ‘Victims of the future’, during the intro Freek played acoustic guitar. During the uptempo part, he switched back to electric guitar. Marcel played to the stars. Pascal’s high pitched outburts were good, so were the multiple vocals at the end. This second set seemed even more energetic than the first, which also made ‘Nuclear attack’ come into its own fully. Subdued blues songs were not allowed to be absent. Certainly not the big hit ‘Still got the blues’. The audience listened breathlessly. The first tones of ‘Parisienne walkways touched the hearts of the visitors. That beautiful feeling was preserved, as this song was sung and played with emotion. Of course Marcel briefly played completely solo, this was rewarded with applause.
For ‘Pretty Woman’, the horns returned. Jan Willem dedicated this song to all the female visitors this evening. Pascal encouraged the audience to sing along with ‘Walking by myself’, and they did. This was much appreciated by the band members. The atmosphere was getting better and better, the party continued with ‘The Blues is alright’, which featured Rene’s organ sounds beautifully. During a chorus, Pascal walked into the hall and sang among the audience. As a matter of course, people sang along.
The Loner
The atmosphere changed naturally during the intro of the instrumental ‘The Loner’. The respectful audience was almost silent during this compelling song. Jan Willem added subtle, wordless vocals. After ‘Murder in the skies’, with extended solos by Marcel, the band left the stage. Of course, an encore was not to be missed. First up was ‘Out in the fields. By the way ‘Back on the streets’ ended, it was clear that this really was the very last song. The Gary Moore tribute band gratefully accepted the well-deserved final applause.
De Gary Moore Tribute Band XL was zeer goed in de Bosuil
Het was even spannend of de Gary Moore Tribute XL van 13 september in De Bosuil (Weert) wel door kon gaan. Want daags ervoor werd het concert van Go_A onverwacht afgelast. Dit kwam door het ontstaan van een onveilige situatie door bouwwerkzaamheden aan het pand. Er werd hard gewerkt aan een tijdelijke oplossing, vrijdagmiddag werd duidelijk dat De Bosuil open kan blijven!
De vaste bandleden stonden veel vaker in De Bosuil, meestal met de Remember Phil and Gary show. Maar vrijdag de 13e stond hier de XL formatie van de Gary Moore tribute band. Dit is inclusief blazers (Jack Geerlings, Christel Jacobs en Lennard Gilissen) en achtergrondzangeressen (Sanne Heuijerjans en Esther van Riesen). Op het moment dat de lichten in de zaal doofden was het gezellig druk in De Bosuil. Jan Willem Ketelaers riep: “Are you ready?” Hij had de leadzang in het openingsnummer ‘After the war’. De achtergrondzang werd niet alleen gedaan door Sanne en Esther, maar ook door zanger Pascal Remans en gitarist Marcel Coenen.

Dit was één van de nummers waarin hij ook de backing vocals deed. De instrumentale stukken met het gitaarspel van Marcel waren geweldig. Voor aanvang van ’Shapes of things’ vertelde Pascal dat de band blij was het dit concert toch door kon gaan. Dat gold natuurlijk ook voor de bezoekers. Want al bij het eerste nummer kon men voelen dat dit een goed concert zou worden. Dat gevoel klopte, want er werd goed gespeeld, en er was volop interactie tussen de bandleden. Je voelde de emotie niet alleen in zang, maar ook in de muziek.
‘King of the Blues’
Hoewel toetsenist Rene Kroon op een rise stond, was hij door zijn tablet minder goed te zien. In de meer heavy nummers was zijn aandeel niet constant goed te horen. Maar zijn mooie aandeel kwam in ‘King of the Blues’ goed naar voren. Weer was de blazerssectie een zeer goede aanvulling. Tijdens een instrumentaal stuk speelde Marcel tegen over saxofonist Lennard. Hun samenwerking was mooi om te zien. De blazers bleven voor ‘Cold day in hell’. De bas is belangrijk in de muziek van Gary, zo ook in dit rustige nummer, dat Jan Willem met emotie zong. Het licht was hier passend kalm. De performance van Freek was ingetogen, maar ook hier was zijn aandeel zeker belangrijk. Marcel prees hem, en terecht. Dit nummer raakte menigeen in het hart.

De tweede set startte met ‘Victims of the future’, tijdens het intro speelde Freek op akoestisch gitaar. Tijdens het uptempo deel wisselde hij terug naar elektrisch gitaar. Marcel speelde de sterren van de hemel. De hoge vocale uithalen van Pascal waren goed, dat gold ook voor de meerstemmige zang op het einde. Deze tweede set leek nog energieker dan de eerste, waardoor ook ’Nuclear attack’ volledig tot zijn recht kwam. Ingetogen blues nummers mochten niet ontbreken. De grote hit ‘Still got the blues’ al helemaal niet. Het publiek luisterde ademloos toe. De eerste tonen van ‘Parisienne walkways’ raakten de bezoekers in het hart. Dat mooie gevoel bleef bewaard, want dit nummer werd met emotie gezongen en gespeeld. Natuurlijk speelde Marcel even helemaal solo, dit werd met applaus beloond.
Voor ‘Pretty Woman’ kwamen de blazers terug. Jan Willem droeg dit nummer op aan alle vrouwelijke bezoekers van deze avond. Pascal moedigde het publiek aan om mee te zingen met ‘Walking by myself’, en dat deed men. Dit tot groot genoegen van de bandleden. De sfeer werd steeds beter, het feestje ging verder met ‘The Blues is alright’, waarin de orgelklanken van Rene mooi naar voren kwamen. Tijdens een refrein liep Pascal de zaal in en zong tussen het publiek. Als vanzelf zong men mee.
The Loner
De sfeer veranderde op een natuurlijke manier tijdens het intro van het instrumentale ‘The Loner’. Het respectvolle publiek was zo goed als stil tijdens dit meeslepende nummer. Jan Willem voegde subtiele, woordeloze zang toe. Na ‘Murder in the skies’, met uitgebreide solo’s van Marcel verliet de band het podium. Een toegift mocht natuurlijk niet ontbreken. Als eerste was dit ‘Out in the fields. Door de manier waarop ‘Back on the streets’ eindige, was het duidelijk dat dit echt het allerlaatste nummer was.
De Gary Moore tribute band nam het welverdiende slot applaus dankbaar in ontvangst.
