Ook in dit nieuwe decennium gaat de traditie door. ‘Remember Phil and Gary is een ode aan
Philip Lynott en Gary Moore. De negende editie van deze show op was 1 februari in De Bosuil, Weert. Net als de voorgaande jaren, wordt ook Thin Lizzy niet vergeten. Na een welkomstwoord van Peter Vleeshouwers, de organisator van dit alles, betrad Limehouse Lizzy (UK), het nog donkere podium. Frontman/bassist Wayne Ellis begroette De Bosuil met: ”Hey Weert, are you ready?” Als eerste speelde dit viertal ‘Jailbreak’. De stem van Wayne past bij de muziek. Hij en de beide gitaristen speelde wireless. Dat gaf ze de mogelijkheid om over het podium te bewegen. Daar maakten ze volop gebruik van, ondertussen ‘poseerden’ ze voor de fotografen.

‘Waiting for an Alibi’
Gitaristen Greg Alcock en James Roberts stonden regelmatig aan de voorrand van het vergrootte podium te spelen. In ‘Waiting for an Alibi’ gaf James een gave solo weg. Rich Kirk speelde mooi strak op zijn drums. Ze waren duidelijk ingespeeld op elkaar, dat bleek uit nummers zoals ‘Dancing in the Moonlight (It’s Caught Me in Its Spotlight)’ en het rockende ‘Are you ready’. Ze performden op een stoere, relaxte manier. Ze spelen zo’n 200 shows per jaar, het performen ging bijna op de automatische piloot. Het publiek genoot van deze vier goede muzikanten.

Cold Sweat
Ook in ‘Cold Sweat’ lag het tempo flink hoog. James ging met beide handen op de hals van zijn gitaar vliegensvlug over de snaren heen. Dit was een show om van te genieten! De ingetogen start van ‘Cowboy song’ was zeer goed. Wayne bespeelde het publiek: na de woorden “The coyote call”, werd er verwacht dat er ‘gehuild’ werd als een coyote. Daar gaf men luidkeels gehoor aan. Na zo’n 1,5 uur eindigde dit eerste optreden van deze avond met de toegift ‘Whiskey in the Jar’

Ode aan Philomena

Afgelopen zomer overleed Philomena Lynott. Om Philip’s moeder te eren werd en een minuut stilte gehouden. De ode werd compleet gemaakt met een optreden van zangeres Esther van Riesen, plus Cyrill Wulms en Gert-Jan Roemen op akoestisch gitaar en zang. Hun stemmen vormde een prachtige blend.

Ze speelden onder andere ‘Borderline en ‘Philomena’. Hoewel sommige mensen er doorheen praatte, werd er ook intens geluisterd. Je zag en voelde de liefde voor de muziek van dit drietal.

Respect voor hun durf om deze ingetogen ode te brengen zo vlak na het rockend optreden van Limehouse Lizzy!

Gary Moore Tribute Band

Na de traditionele loterij die bij deze show hoort, was het tijd voor de Gary Moore Tribute band. Deze begon met een gave gitaarsolo van Marcel Coenen. Jan Willem Ketelaers begroette ons, waarna hij ‘Friday on my mind’ te zingen, gevolgd door ‘Wild Frontier’. De bandleden hadden er duidelijk zin in, de energie spatte ervan af. Pascal Remans nam de leadzang over voor ‘Always Gonna Love You’. Toetsenist René Kroon liet dit nummer rustig starten. Pascal heeft een hoog bereik en daarbij ook nog flink power op zijn stem. In de rustige delen speelde Freek Gielen op een akoestische gitaar, in de rockende op zijn elektrische gitaar. Hij heeft een meer ingetogen manier van performen dan Marcel, maar ook bij hem was zowel passie als plezier af te lezen op zijn gezicht.
Het was niet te merken dat dit een ‘gelegenheidsband’ is die niet zo vaak met elkaar op treedt. Deze ervaren muzikanten zitten in diverse bands. Drummer Hans In ‘T Zandt speelt in diverse rockbands. Prog metal liefhebbers kennen Jan Willem, Marcel en Freek natuurlijk van Ayreon.

Parisian Walkaways
Het intro van ‘Parisian Walkaways’ bezorgde menigeen al kippenvel. De betoverende solo van Marcel deed daar nog een schepje bovenop. Het publiek keek vol ongeloof toe hoe hij de mooiste klanken uit zijn gitaar haalde. De bewondering was er niet alleen van uit de zaal. Ook de bandleden genoten van elkaars kunnen en van het samen op het podium staan. Daar waar de muziek het toeliet, straalde het plezier eraf. Dat sloeg over naar het publiek, en andersom. In ‘Once In a Lifetime’ was het Freek die de aandacht naar zich toe trekt met zijn gitaarspel. Marcel zette hem even in het zonnetje.

‘Out In The Fields’
Na een aantal power nummers kwam Peter Vleeshouwers het podium op. Hij vertelde dat de Gary Moore Tribute band een semi akoestische versie van ‘Out In The Fields’ online gaat zetten. De opbrengst daarvan komt geheel ten goede aan een standbeeld dat voor Gary Moore in Belfast moet gaan komen. De Bosuil mocht al kennismaken met dit duet tussen Jan Willem en Pascal. Marcel en Freek speelden allebei op een akoestische gitaar. Men was onder de indruk, en terecht!

Bassist Frank de Groot is veel meer dan ‘alleen maar’ onderdeel van de ritmesectie, dat was vooral duidelijk in ‘Empty Rooms’. Ook dit nummer was, net zoals alle andere, fantastisch. Het was al ruim na middernacht toen ‘Back On The Streets’, het laatste nummer eindigde. Gelukkig kreeg men ‘Over The Hills And Far Away’ als toegift. Niet alleen de bands waren geweldig, ook het licht en geluid was weer zeer goed verzorgd. Een aantal bezoekers en muzikanten bleven tot in de kleine uurtjes napraten in het gezellige cafégedeelte van De Bosuil.

That gave them the opportunity to move across the stage. They used that to the fullest, meanwhile they ‘posed’ for the photographers.

Waiting for an Alibi
Guitarists Greg Alcock and James Roberts regularly stood at the forefront of the enlarged stage. In ‘Waiting for an Alibi‘ James gave away a cool solo. Rich Kirk played nicely tight on his drums. They were clearly in tune with each other, as tracks like ‘Dancing in the Moonlight (It’s Caught Me in Its Spotlight)‘ and the rocking ‘Are you ready‘ showed. They perforated in a cool, relaxed way. They play about 200 shows a year, the performance was almost on automatic pilot. The audience enjoyed these four good musicians.

Cold Sweat
Also, in ‘Cold Sweat‘ the pace was quite high. James went with both hands on the neck of his guitar quickly over the strings. This was a show to enjoy! The subdued start of ‘Cowboy song‘ was very good. Wayne entertained the audience: after the words “The coyote call“, people were expected to ‘cry’ like a coyote. This was loudly answered. After about 1,5 hour this first performance of this evening ended with the encore ‘Whiskey in the Jar‘.

Ode to Philomena

Philomena Lynott died last summer. To honour Philip’s mother, a minute’s silence was held. The tribute was completed with a performance by singer Esther van Riesen, plus Cyrill Wulms and Gert-Jan Roemen on acoustic guitar and vocals. Their voices formed a beautiful blend.

They played among others ‘Borderline‘ and ‘Philomena‘. Although some people talked through it, they were people who were listening intensely as well. You saw and felt the love for the music of this trio.

Jan Willem Ketelaers greeted us, after which he sang ‘Friday on my mind‘, followed by ‘Wild Frontier‘. The band members clearly enjoyed it, the energy exploded. Pascal Remans became the lead vocalist for ‘Always Gonna Love You’. Keyboardist René Kroon started this song quietly. Pascal has a high range and also a lot of power on his voice. In the quiet parts Freek Gielen played on an acoustic guitar, in the rocking on his electric guitar. He has a more subdued way of performing than Marcel, but also with him both passion and pleasure could be seen on his face.
It wasn’t noticeable that this is an ‘occasional band’ that doesn’t perform together very often. These experienced musicians are in various bands. Drummer Hans In ‘T Zandt plays in various rock bands. Prog metal lovers know Jan Willem, Marcel and Freek from Ayreon of course.

Parisian Walkaways
The intro of ‘Parisian Walkaways‘ already gave many people goosebumps. Marcel’s enchanting solo added to that. The audience watched in disbelief how he got the most beautiful sounds out of his guitar. The admiration was not only from the audience. The band members also enjoyed each other’s skills and being on stage together. Where the music allowed it, the pleasure was glowing. That spread to the audience, and vice versa. In ‘Once In a Lifetime’ it was Freek who drew the attention with his guitar playing. Marcel put him in the picture for a moment.

Out In The Fields
After a number of power songs Peter Vleeshouwers entered the stage. He told that the Gary Moore Tribute band is going to upload a semi acoustic version of ‘Out In The Fields‘. The proceeds of that will go entirely to a statue that is to be built for Gary Moore in Belfast. De Bosuil already had the opportunity to get acquainted with this duet between Jan Willem and Pascal. Marcel and Freek both played on an acoustic guitar. People were impressed, and rightly so!

Bass player Frank de Groot is much more than ‘just’ part of the rhythm section, that was especially clear in ‘Empty Rooms‘. This song was, just like all the others, fantastic. It was already well past midnight when ‘Back On The Streets‘, the last song ended. Luckily, they got ‘Over The Hills And Far Away‘ as an encore. Not only the bands were great, also the light and sound was very good again. A number of visitors and musicians stayed until the wee hours to chat in the cozy pub area of De Bosuil.
