English prog band Mostly Autumn performed at De Bosuil in Weert on Sunday afternoon 17 December. The support act was The Dutch Lisa de Bruijn, aka Liza Weald. She describes her music as “conscious soul songs about self-love and the magic of life”. Very modestly, Liza, guitarist Thomas Couperus and bassist Ivan Schoelink walked onto the stage. Liza’s long-held wordless vocals matched the spiritual, mysterious music of ‘Spirit Song’. Very gently, she played her (vegan) shaman drum from Buffalo Drums. Then she played acoustic guitar. The backing vocals of Thomas and Ivan formed a beautiful harmony with Liza’s tender voice.
Growing Fiercer
During ‘Inner Tide’, Liza used a wind chime as an instrument, again she did this detail with a lot of concentration. Between several songs there was a guitar change. Due to the careful tuning, there were several, rather long silences. Even when Thomas played on electric guitar this did not dominate at all. Most people were quiet, so the sensitive songs came into their own. Before they started ‘Growing Fiercer’, the last song, Liza told us that Mostly Autumn was the first band she ever saw live. Then, as a 12-year-old girl, she knew: I want that too. She kept believing in herself, with the result that she was allowed to open on this Sunday afternoon. Despite small insecurities and imperfections in the band, you could feel the love for the music. Liza Weald should be proud of herself and her band.
Mostly Autumn
Almost unnoticed, Mostly Autumn’s first band members appeared on stage. ‘In for the Bite’ was the catchy opening. The first piece was sung by lead guitarist Bryan Josh.
Olivia Sparnenn-Josh appeared on stage just before her share of vocals. She always wears a pretty outfit, and this afternoon was no different. Usually bassist Andy Smith stays in a “corner” for a long time, but this time he walked to the centre of the stage during the opening song.
The images on the projector matched the music, for instance, at ‘Into the stars’ there was a starry sky.
Winter Mountain
‘Western Skies’ starts with Iain Jennings on keys and Angela Gordon on flute. You could feel the trills of Andy’s low bass. Again, Bryan’s guitar playing was compelling. In the subdued parts, Henry Rogers drummed suitably mellow; where he could, he beat beautifully powerfully. In the forte (=loud) parts, a single cymbal was quite shrill in sound. Bryan’s voice was a little hoarse at the beginning of ‘Winter Mountain’, moreover, he did not sing quite flawlessly. In the gentle parts, his harmony vocals with Olivia were good. You were actually short of eyes, there was a lot to see. During most of the instrumental pieces, Oliva danced. Andy and Bryan were regularly playing next to or in front of each other, you could see them enjoying themselves. The enjoyment could be seen in everyone.
Several songs ended suddenly, which went flawlessly with almost all of them. Guitarist Chris Johnson and Angela did backing vocals in several songs. The voices everywhere were in harmony.
Heroes Never Die
Most of the songs that were played are often on the setlist. So was ‘Silver Glass’, which starts with piano sounds by Iain and flute by Angela. Chris’ high clear vocals were impressive again this afternoon. He was beautifully lit, the rest of the stage was dark. As the rest of the band joined in, more light came on. The tempo and volume changes were played very well. Both the intense and subdued parts probably got under the skin of several fans.
Non-stop this transitioned to sampled sounds of wind. This is the intro to ‘The Night Sky’. Bryan and Oliva’s vocals together were good. Henry drummed with sticks with soft ends. Angela first played on a metal whistle, and later on the flute. The applause at the end of this song was well-deserved. Especially the high, somewhat louder sung parts, Bryan was not consistently pitch-perfect. But he sang and played with inspiration. You saw and felt that, and was appreciated by the audience.
‘Heroes Never Die’ is an ode to loved ones/friends who are no longer around. Bryan’s sensitive vocals and his guitar playing were very good. This song was played with tremendous passion. It touched many people, with a few people shedding a tear. Bryan played faster and faster, he was totally “into” the music, and was one big chunk of passion.
I Believe in Father Christmas
The encore started with the upbeat ‘I Believe in Father Christmas’ (Greg Lake cover), the band members wearing Santa hats. Bryan’s vocals were almost solo, which went very well! This festive atmosphere
formed a nice contrast with ‘A Spaceman Came Travelling’ (Chris de Burgh cover) which was sung by Chris. The audience was completely silent, you could even hear Chris tapping the beat with his foot. During the uptempo piece, he asked the fans to sing along, which they did. The atmosphere became increasingly upbeat. ‘Fairytale of New York’ in particular became a jolly affair. Bryan and Chris faced each other, laughing and playing each other’s guitar. This was an upbeat end to a fine performance that lasted over 2 hours.

De Engelse progband Mostly Autumn trad zondagmiddag 17 december op in De Bosuil in Weert. De support act was de Nederlandse Lisa de Bruijn, alias Liza Weald. Zij omschrijft haar muziek als “bewuste zielenliedjes over zelfliefde en de magie van het leven”. Heel bescheiden liepen Liza, gitarist Thomas Couperus en bassist Ivan Schoelink het podium op. De langaanhoudende woordeloze zang van Liza sloot aan bij de spirituele, mysterieuze muziek van ‘Spirit Song’. Heel zacht bespeelde ze haar (vegan) sjamanendrum van Buffalo Drums. Vervolgens speelde ze akoestisch gitaar. De achtergrondzang van Thomas en Ivan vormden een mooie harmonie met de tedere stem van Liza.

Tijdens ‘Inner Tide’ gebruikte Liza een windgong als instrument, ook dit detail deed ze heel geconcentreerd. Tussen een aantal nummers was er een gitaarwissel. Door het zorgvuldige stemmen vielen er diverse, vrij lange stiltes. Ook als Thomas op elektrische gitaar speelde overheerste dat absoluut niet. De meeste mensen waren stil, zodat de gevoelige liedjes goed tot hun recht kwamen. Voordat ze aan ‘Growing Fiercer’, het laatste nummer begonnen, vertelde Liza dat Mostly Autumn de eerste band was die ze ooit live zag. Toen wist ze als 12 jarige meisje: Dat wil ik ook. Ze bleef in zichzelf geloven, met als resultaat dat ze op deze zondagmiddag mocht openen. Ondanks kleine onzekerheden en imperfecties bij de band voelde je de liefde voor de muziek. Liza Weald mag trots zijn op zichzelf en haar band.
Mostly Autumn
Bijna ongemerkt verschenen de eerste bandleden van Mostly Autumn op de bühne. ‘In for the Bite’ was de pakkende opening. Het eerst stuk werd gezongen door lead gitarist Bryan Josh.
Olivia Sparnenn-Josh verscheen vlak voor haar aandeel in de zang op het podium. Ze heeft altijd een mooie outfit aan, en dat was vanmiddag niet anders. Meestal blijft bassist Andy Smith lang in een “hoekje” staan, maar nu liep al tijdens het openingsnummer naar het midden van het podium.
De beelden op de beamer pasten bij de muziek, bijvoorbeeld bij ‘Into the stars’ was er een sterrenhemel te zien.
Winter Mountain
‘Western Skies’ start met Iain Jennings op toetsen en Angela Gordon op dwarsfluit. Je voelde de trillingen van de lage bastonen van Andy. Weer was het gitaarspel van Bryan meeslepend. In de ingetogen delen drumde Henry Rogers passend zacht, daar waar het kon sloeg hij mooi krachtig. Een enkele cimbaal was in de forte (=hard) gespeelde stukken vrij schel van klank. Bryans stem was aan het begin ‘Winter Mountain’ een beetje schor, bovendien zong hij niet helemaal zuiver. In het kleiner gespeeld delen was zijn samenzang met Olivia goed. Je kwam eigenlijk ogen te kort, er was veel te zien. Tijdens de meeste instrumentale stukken danste Oliva. Andy en Bryan stonden regelmatig naast of tegenover elkaar te spelen, je zag ze genieten. Het plezier was bij iedereen te zien.
Diverse nummers eindigen plotseling, dat ging bij bijna overal foutloos. Gitarist Chris Johnson en Angela deden in verschillende nummers de achtergrondzang. De stemmen waren overal in harmonie met het geheel.
Heroes Never Die
De meeste nummers die werden gespeeld, staan vaak op de setlist. Zo ook ‘Silver Glass’, dat start met pianoklanken van Iain en dwarsfluit van Angela. De hoge heldere zang van Chris was ook vanmiddag indrukwekkend. Hij werd mooi in het licht gezet, de rest van het podium was donker. Toen de rest van de band bijviel, kwam er meer licht. De tempo-en volumewisselingen werden zeer goed gespeeld. Zowel de intense als de ingetogen delen kropen wellicht bij meerdere fans onder de huid.
Non-stop ging dit over naar gesampelde geluiden van wind. Dit is het intro van ‘The Night Sky’. De samenzang van Bryan en Oliva was goed. Henry drumde met stokken met zachte uiteinden. Angela speelde eerst op een metalen whistle, later op dwarsfuit. Het applaus aan het einde van dit nummer was dik verdiend. Met name de hoge, wat luider gezongen delen was Bryan niet constant toonvast. Maar hij zong en speelde met bezieling. Dat zag je, dat voelde je, en werd gewaardeerd door het publiek.
‘Heroes Never Die’ is een ode aan geliefden/vrienden die er niet meer zijn. De gevoelige zang van Bryan en zijn gitaarspel waren erg goed. Dit nummer werd met enorme passie gespeeld. Dat raakte menigeen, bij een enkeling rolde er een traan over de wang. Bryan speelde steeds sneller,
hij zat helemaal “in” de muziek, en was één brok passie.
I Believe in Father Christmas
De toegift startte met het vrolijke ‘I Believe in Father Christmas’ (Greg Lake cover), de bandleden hadden een kerstmuts op. De zang van Bryan was bijna solo, dat ging erg goed! Deze feestsfeer
vormde een mooie tegenstelling met ‘A Spaceman Came Travelling’ (Chris de Burgh cover) wat gezongen werd door Chris. Het publiek was helemaal stil, je hoorde zelfs dat Chris met zijn voet de maat mee tikte. Tijdens het uptempo stuk vroeg hij de fans om mee te zingen, dat deed men. De sfeer werd steeds vrolijker. Vooral ‘Fairytale of New York’ werd een vrolijke boel. Bryan en Chris stond tegenover elkaar, en speelden lachend op elkaars gitaar. Dit was een vrolijke afsluiter van een mooi optreden dat ruim 2 uur duurde.
