Most rock/metal fans are no fans of Helmut Lotti. Less so that they would want to attend a concert of him… until he came up with ‘Helmut Lotti goes metal’. Suddenly he was playing festivals, last year he performed at Bospop, among others. On the first Friday after carnival, this versatile artist played his ‘Heart rock show’ at De Bosuil in Weert.
‘Dream on’, with its gentle intro, was the opening track. Helmut sang articulately, but he especially struggled with the higher notes, by no means everything was flawless. However, the final vocal outburst was good. Helmut sang the intro of ‘Poison’ with a raspy voice. Both in terms of vocals and performance, it was a very personal version. Just as well, because how can Alice Cooper be equalled? Guitarists Bram Van Den Berghe and Tim Toegaert had the backing vocals here.
Heart Rock
Many songs had a very recognisable intro, such as ‘Smoke on the water’. Pedro Gordts’ part on keys was very good, as was Filip Van Laer’s drumming. A number of songs come from the album ‘Helmut Lottie goes metal. But ‘Cold as Ice’ comes from his new album ‘Heart rock’. Helmut sang the intro of ‘Bed of Roses’ excessively hoarse, as a joke. In the sensitively sung parts, he displayed good empaty. Bram’s guitar playing earned an extra applause.
Helmut made eye contact with the audience, you could see he was having fun. He did not have a ‘real’ rock performance. Sometimes it was slightly theatrical, other times almost clownish. It was certainly energetic: jumping, hip-swinging, he did it all. Even after jumping during an instrumental piece, he could sing again immediately afterwards. Breath and endurance enough, yet not everything was sung quite perfectly. The atmosphere in De Bosuil did not suffer at all. The audience spontaneously sang along with many songs; the band members were clearly enjoying themselves.
Helmut wrote ‘The Darkness’ himself. With expression of face and hands, he gave the lyrics extra intensity. The light matched the music throughout; at the end it was completely dark for a moment. Both the guitarists and bassist Bart van Lierde played wireless. Bart moved to along with the rhythm of the music, he too played beautifully! ‘Love is a Battlefield’ was transformed into its very own version. Especially the intro was sung much lower, moreover, tempo was slower. It took some getting used to, yet it was a lovely version.
Nothing else matters
‘That’s Alright’ by Elvis was played in the style of Motörhead, so the tempo in vocals and music was quite high, the audience enjoyed it. The same was true of ‘Tiritomba’. People were singing and clapping along.
Helmut asked to grab the cellphones for ‘Nothing else matters’. Sitting on the monitor, Helmut brought his lyrics convincingly. People sang along respectfully with this ballad. The applause was well-deserved. Immediately after this, ‘Call me’ was played. So the setlist was not only varied, but also the order was well chosen. Pedro’s part on keys in ‘I was made for loving you’ was good.
Before the start of ‘Que je t’aime’, Helmut left the stage. Bart, Tim and Bram were playing side by side. Accompanied by applause, Helmut reappeared on stage, having swapped his blouse with rushes for a custom-made (metal) t-shirt. He sang this song by Johnny Hallyday with inspiration. Tim and Bram were playing next to each other at their knees, the emotion was palpable with them too. The build-up to more volume went perfectly.
Several more sing-alongs followed, such as ‘Zombie’ and ‘Born to be wild’. People enjoyed not only Helmut’s vocals, but also the band for sure. The atmosphere in the hall became increasingly exuberant. During ‘Paradise City’, Helmut used his microphone as an attribute in his performance. He danced and jumped, and still had enough breath to sing, there is absolutely nothing wrong with his physical condition.
After this song, the band members stayed on stage, but Helmut walked away. The audience wanted more, and scanned ‘Helmut…Helmut’. The encore was ‘Highway to hell’. Bram, like Angus McKinnon Young, ‘walked’ back and forth a few times. During the choruses, Helmut held the microphone above the heads of the audience who roared along. Helmut closed with some beautiful high notes. Without a break, Helmut and band had played for over 1.5 hours. Flawless or not. Helmut is an entertainer, and the audience had enjoyed this well put-together show.
Helmut Lotti entertainde in De Bosuil
De meeste rock/metal liefhebbers zijn geen fan van Helmut Lotti. Laat staat dat ze een concert van hem zouden willen bezoeken… totdat hij kwam met ‘Helmut Lotti goes metal’. Ineens stond hij op festivals, vorig jaar stond hij onder andere op Bospop. Op de eerste vrijdag na carnaval stond deze veelzijdige zanger met zijn ‘Heart rock show’ in De Bosuil in Weert.
‘Dream on’, met zijn rustige intro, was het openingsnummer. Helmut zong duidelijk, maar hij had vooral moeite de hogere tonen, lang niet alles was zuiver. De laatste vocale uithaal was wel goed. Helmut zong het intro van ‘Poison’ met een schorre stem. Zowel qua zang en performance was het een heel eigen versie. Maar goed ook, want hoe is Alice Cooper te evenaren? De gitaristen Bram Van Den Berghe en Tim Toegaert hadden hier de backing vocals.

Veel nummers hadden een heel herkenbaar intro, zoals ‘Smoke on the water’. Het aandeel op de toetsen van Pedro Gordts was erg goed, dat gold ook voor het drumspel van Filip Van Laer. Een aantal nummers komen van het album ‘Helmut Lottie goes metal. Maar ‘Cold as Ice’ komt van zijn nieuwe album ‘Heart rock’. Het intro van ‘Bed of Roses’ zong Helmut als grapje overdreven schor. In de gevoelig gezongen delen liet hij een goede beleving zien. Het gitaarspel van Bram leverde een tussentijds applaus op.
Helmut maakte oogcontact met het publiek, je zag dat hij plezier had. Hij had geen “echte” rock performance. De ene keer was het licht theatraal, een andere keer bijna clownesk. Energiek was het zeker: springen, heupwiegen, hij deed het allemaal. Zelfs na het springen in een instrumentaal stuk, kon hij meteen daarna weer zingen. Adem en conditie genoeg, toch was niet alles helemaal zuiver gezongen. De sfeer in De Bosuil leed er totaal niet onder. Het publiek zong veel nummers spontaan mee, de bandleden genoten duidelijk.
‘The Darkness’ schreef Helmut zelf. Met mimiek van gezicht en handen gaf hij de tekst extra beleving. Het licht sloot overal aan bij de muziek, op het einde was het even helemaal donker in de zaal. Zowel de gitaristen als bassist Bart van Lierde speelde wireless. bart bewoog mee in het ritme van de muziek, ook hij speelde goed! ’Love is a Battlefield’ werd getransformeerd in een hele eigen versie. Vooral het intro was veel lager gezongen, bovendien was tempo langzamer. Het was even wennen, toch was het een mooie versie.
Nothing else matters
‘That’s Alright’ van Elvis werd gespeeld in de stijl van Motörhead, het tempo in zang en muziek lag dus flink hoog, het publiek genoot. Dat gold ook voor ‘Tiritomba’. Men zong en klapte mee.
Helmut vroeg om de telefoons er bij te pakken voor ‘Nothing else matters’. Zittend op de monitor bracht Helmut zijn tekst overtuigend. Men zong respectvol mee met deze ballad. Het applaus was dik verdiend. Meteen hierna werd ‘Call me’ gespeeld. De setlist was dus niet alleen gevarieerd, maar ook de volgorde was goed gekozen. Het aandeel op de toetsen van Pedro in ‘I was made for loving you’ was goed.

Bram “liep” net als Angus McKinnon Young een paar keer heen en weer. Tijdens de refreinen hield Helmut de microfoon boven de hoofden van het publiek dat meebrulde. Helmut sloot af met een aantal mooie, hoge tonen. Zonder pauze hadden Helmut en band ruim 1,5 uur gespeeld. Foutloos of niet.. Helmut is een entertainer, en het publiek had genoten van deze goed opgezette show.
