Fans hebben bijna zeven jaar moeten wachten op ‘In Oculis Meis, het vierde album van de Duitse prog band Traumhaus. Dit album gaat over de onbewuste angsten van de mens. En de manier om zelf in balans te blijven terwijl er in de wereld van alles gebeurt. Voor het eerst zijn alle nummers niet alleen in het Duits gezongen, maar ook in het Engels. Dat is de reden dat ’In Oculis Meis’ een dubbelalbum is geworden.

‘The Awakening’ start met pianospel, vermengend met sferische klanken. Een hoge stem wordt ingezet als instrument. De wending naar meer pit verloopt wat vreemd, de muziek is nu doffer van geluid. De theatrale zang van Alexander Weyland is vrij lastig te verstaan.

‘Preserve & Understand’ begint dromerig. Er is een plotselinge wending naar rock. Een aantal andere wendingen verlopen geleidelijk. Door de herhalingen in het ritme, vallen de leuke details niet altijd meteen op.
Gitarist Tobias Hampl speelt gevarieerd. De gestapelde zang is goed toegevoegd. De structuur voelt niet altijd aan als een geheel, maar de opbouw naar het einde is mooi.

De woorden van Alexander zitten tussen praten en zingen in tijdens het eerste deel van ‘Walk on yourself’. Dit is in harmonie met de muziek. Als muziek in volume en tempo toeneemt, blijft de balans met de zang bestaan. Ook in dit nummer zijn er diverse herhalingen in de muziek. Het toetsenwerk is prima en het gitaarspel is super. De licht klassieke elementen hadden gerust wat duidelijker aanwezig mogen zijn,

Na de gave intro van ‘Escape’ is er een mix van vet lage bas en enkele hoge tonen. Dit vormt samen met woordeloze, hoge zang een goed contrast. Enkele details vallen soms nauwelijks op. Het einde is onverwacht maar gaaf.

In ‘So Many Ways’ worden (heavy) rock elementen gemixt, dan wel afgewisseld met elektrische klanken. Het komt her en der wat chaotisch over, maar dat past in het thema.

Je hoort niet alleen de elektronische klank van de toetsen in ‘The New Morning’, maar ook heerlijk (bombastisch) orgelspel. Gaaf gitaarspel en supergoed orgelspel wisselen elkaar een aantal keer af. Alles wordt goed aangevuld door de ritmesectie. Met Till Ottinger op bas en Ray Gattner achter de drumkit. De details van onder andere de zang zijn prima verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Qua opbouw is dit één van de beter nummers.

Een aantal toegevoegde geluiden in ‘Understand & Preserve’ zijn met koptelefoon op minder aangenaam. Als ik het volume lager draai, is de overige muziek weer wat te zacht.

‘X-Ray The Darkness’ start met pure, heldere klanken. Na de wending die niet helemaal soepel verloopt, is er weer de mix van rock en lichtere sound van de toetsen. De (gestapelde) zang klinkt in sommige stukken vervormd. De heldere klanken van het begin keren terug. Ineens is er onrust in de muziek, deze verdwijnt ongemerkt. Dit laatste nummer heeft een plotseling einde.

De (nieuwe) heavy elementen passen prima bij Traumhaus, en mogen zeker blijven. Wel is dit soms te zacht ten opzichte van de rustige/sferische delen. Bovendien is de klank van de heavy delen vrij dof, de sferische delen zijn vaak wel helder. Door het ontbreken van deze finesse, kruipen zang en muziek niet onder mijn huid. In diverse delen is het aantal herhalingen vrij hoog. Verder is er genoeg variatie, en zijn er volop details. Al vallen deze soms nauwelijks op. Hoewel de Engelse CD goed is, voelt de Duitstalige cd natuurlijker aan, alsof Alexander er meer passie in heeft weten te leggen. In Oculis Meis’ moet zeker groeien, maar blijft toch aangenaam in je hoofd hangen.

Traumhaus – In Oculis Meis

Fans have had to wait almost seven years for ‘In Oculis Meis‘, the fourth album of the German prog band Traumhaus. This album is about the unconscious fears of mankind. That is why ‘In Oculis Meis‘ has become a double album.

‘The Awakening‘ starts with piano playing, mixed with spherical sounds. A high-pitched voice is used as an instrument. The turn towards more spunk is a bit strange, the music is now duller in sound. Alexander Weyland’s theatrical vocals are quite difficult to understand.

‘Preserve & Understand‘ starts dreamy. There is a sudden turn to rock. A number of other twists are somewhat gradual. Because of the repetitions in the rhythm, the nice details are not always immediately noticeable.
Guitarist Tobias Hampl plays in a varied way. The stacked vocals are well added. The structure doesn’t always feel like a whole, but the build-up to the end is nice.

Alexander’s words are between talking and singing during the first part of ‘Walk on yourself‘. This is in harmony with the music. After the awesome intro of ‘Escape‘ there is a mix of cool bass and some high tones. Together with wordless, high pitched vocals this creates a good contrast. Some details sometimes hardly stand out. The end is unexpected but cool.

In ‘So Many Ways‘ (heavy) rock elements are mixed or alternated with electric sounds. It seems a bit chaotic here and there, but that fits the theme.

You don’t just hear the electronic sound of the keys in ‘The New Morning‘. There is also delicious (bombastic) organ playing. Cool guitar playing and super good organ playing alternate a number of times. Everything is well complemented by the rhythm section. With Till Ottinger on bass and Ray Gattner behind the drum kit. The details of among others the vocals are well distributed over the headphones. In terms of structure, this is one of the better songs.

A number of added sounds in ‘Understand & Preserve‘ aren’t comfortable with headphones. When I turn down the volume, the other music is a bit too soft.

‘X-Ray The Darkness‘ starts with pure, clear sounds. After the turn that is not completely smooth, there is again the mix of rock and lighter sound of the keys. The (stacked) vocals sound distorted in some pieces. The clear sounds of the beginning return. Suddenly there is ‘commotion’ in the music, it disappears unnoticed. This last song has a abrupt end.

The (new) heavy elements fit well with Traumhaus, and are allowed to stay for sure. However, sometimes this is not enough compared to the quiet/spherical parts.
Moreover, the sound of the heavy parts is quite dull and the spherical parts are often clear. Because of the lack of this finesse, vocals and music don’t get under my skin. In several parts the number of repetitions is quite high. Furthermore, there is enough variation, and there are plenty of details. Although sometimes these are hardly noticeable. Although the English CD is good, the German CD feels more natural, as if Alexander has managed to put more passion into it. In Oculis Meis‘ should certainly grow, but stucks comfortably in your head.
