In 2016 bracht The Neal Morse Band het prog album ‘The Similitude Of A Dream’ uit. Een uitgebreide tour volgde. Vorig jaar lanceerde The Neal Morse Band de opvolger ‘The Great Adventure’. Er kwam een tour waar de beide albums gespeeld werden. Deze tour kreeg de naam ‘The Great AdvenTOUR’.
The Neal Morse Band trad voor het eerst in de Tsjechië op, en wel in Brno. Van dit concert kwam op 6 maart een dubbel cd/blue ray uit.
Als eerste hoor je het intro waarmee de tour geopend wordt. Dit is door de strijkinstrumenten klassiek georiënteerd en van filmische allure. Wat is dit prachtig opgebouwd! Het geluid van de wind loopt over in ‘Overture’. Fans klappen even later mee op de maat. Neal Morse zingt bijna solo, zijn stem bezorgt me kippenvel. Wie bij één van de concerten is geweest, zie de beelden op de beamer vast weer voor zich, en beleeft dit moment opnieuw. Het kleine schorre randje op de stem van Neal zorgt voor extra emotie. Je wordt als luisteraar het concert mee ingetrokken. Dit is live prog van een zeer hoog niveau.
Na het gevoelige ‘The Dream Isn’t Over’ volgt het opzwepende ‘Welcome to the World’. De samenzang is zoals altijd geweldig. Tussen de opzwepende stukken zitten complexe progrock delen, met lekker veel bas en keyboard.
Het gitaarspel van Eric Gillette is fenomenaal. Maar alle muzikanten zijn van groot kaliber. Zoveel talent in één band het blijft onvoorstelbaar.
Ik word zo in beslag genomen dat bijna vergeten dat dit live is, totdat je het publiek weer hoort.
Dat gebeurt onder andere tijdens en na ‘I Got To Run’. Op de momenten dat Neal klein zingt, kruipt zijn stem iedere keer onder mijn huid.
Het enthousiasme van de fans tijdens de opzwepende stukken in ‘The Great Adventure’ is heerlijk. De samenzang is weer subliem, en ook instrumentaal verloopt alles perfect.
Zo rijgen de mooie momenten zich aaneen op deze eerste cd.

En dat gaat door op het tweede schijfje. ‘Overture 2’ geeft me binnen enkele seconden kippenvel. Als tempo en volume toenemen hoor je de fans meeklappen. Totdat het nummer bombastisch wordt en het complexe, maar gave ritme nog nauwelijks te volgen is. ‘Long Ago’ is kalmer van opzet. Je hoort weer de emotie in Neal’s stem.
Her en der klinken de nummers, en dan vooral de zang anders, meer theatraler dan op het studioalbum. ‘Child Of Wonder’ komt live intenser over, alsof het nummer meer eigen is gemaakt door de band.
De live beleving in ‘The Great Despair’ is super. Na een up-tempo stuk is er een snelle transitie naar een fantastisch klein gespeeld deel.
Het up-tempo stuk van ‘Freedom Calling’ is fenomenaal gespeeld. Natuurlijk wordt er van deze (bombastische) live versie iets extra’s gemaakt, een solo van Mike Portnoy mag absoluut niet ontbreken, en wat past die hier goed in! Je hoort de enthousiaste reactie van de fans. Het klein gespeelde deel is wederom subliem.
Als de eerste tonen van ‘A Love That Never Dies’ klinken, is er een transformatie in de sfeer merkbaar. De interactie met de fans is warm.
De toegift bestaat uit een medley van verschillende nummers. Het eerste nummer is een ‘oudje’: ‘The Land of Beginning Again’. Na dit ontroerende nummer volgen diverse opzwepende nummers, waarin de muziek soms heerlijk bombastisch is. Het is duidelijk te horen dat het publiek geniet. Dit is niet zomaar een toegift, met ruim 27 minuten heet deze heel terecht ‘The Great Medley’. Delen van diverse nummers worden verweven tot één indrukwekkend geheel. Het laatste deel is klein gespeeld, de opbouw naar het einde wordt lekker lang gerekt. Beter had dit live album niet kunnen eindigen. ‘The Great Adventour – Live in Brno 2019’ is een must have voor de fans.

The Neal Morse Band – The Great Adventour – Live in Brno 2019
In 2016 The Neal Morse Band released the prog album ‘The Similitude Of A Dream‘. An extensive tour followed. Last year The Neal Morse Band launched the successor ‘The Great Adventure‘. There followed a tour where both albums were played. This tour got the name ‘The Great AdvenTOUR‘.
The Neal Morse Band performed for the first time in the Czech Republic, in Brno. On March the 6th a double cd/blue ray of this concert was released.
First you hear the intro that opens the tour. This is by the string instruments classically oriented and of cinematic allure. What a beautiful buildup this is! The sound of the wind turns into ‘Overture‘. Fans clap to the beat a bit later. Neal Morse sings almost solo, his voice gives me goose bumps. Anyone who has been to one of the concerts, will probably see the images on the beamer in front of them again, and relive this moment. The small raspy edge on Neal’s voice creates extra emotion. As a listener, you are drawn into the concert. This is live prog of a very high level.
After the sensitive ‘The Dream Isn’t Over‘ follows the exhilarating ‘Welcome to the World‘. The harmony singing is, as always, great. Between the rousing pieces are complex prog rock parts, with lots of bass and keyboard.
Eric Gillette’s guitar playing is phenomenal. But all musicians are of great caliber. So much talent in one band, it remains unimaginable.
I’m so engrossed that I almost forget that this is live, until you hear the audience again.
That happens during and after ‘I Got To Run‘. Every time when Neal sings subdued, his voice gets under my skin.
The enthusiasm of the fans during the exhilarating pieces in ‘The Great Adventure‘ is delicious. The harmony vocals are sublime again, and also instrumentally everything goes perfectly.
This is how the beautiful moments are chained together on this first CD.

And that continues on the second disc. ‘Overture 2‘ gives me goose bumps in seconds. As tempo and volume increase you can hear the fans clapping along. Until the song becomes bombastic and the complex, but awesome rhythm is hard to follow. ‘Long Ago‘ is calmer. You can hear the emotion in Neal’s voice again.
Here and there the songs, especially the vocals, sound more theatrical than on the studio album. ‘Child Of Wonder‘ is live more intense, as if the song is more personalized by the band.
The live experience in ‘The Great Despair‘ is super. After an up-tempo piece, there’s a fast transition to a fantastically small played part. The up-tempo piece of ‘Freedom Calling‘ has been played phenomenally. Of course, this (bombastic) live version is made into something special, a solo by Mike Portnoy should definitely not be missing, and what a good fit it is! You can hear the enthusiastic reaction of the fans. The small part is again sublime. When the first tones of ‘A Love That Never Dies‘ sound, a transformation in the atmosphere is noticeable. The interaction with the fans is warm.
The encore consists of a medley of different songs. The first song is an ‘oldie’: ‘The Land of Beginning Again‘. This touching song is followed by several exciting songs, in which the music is sometimes wonderfully bombastic. It’s obvious that the audience is enjoying themselves. This is not just an ordinary encore, with over 27 minutes it is quite rightly called ‘The Great Medley‘. Parts of various songs are woven into one impressive ensemble. The last part is played small, the build-up to the end is stretched for a pretty long time. This live album couldn’t have ended better. The Great Adventour – Live in Brno 2019‘ is a must have for the fans.
