English prog band ‘The Mighty Bard’ has been around for about 19 years. Their debut album ‘Blue God and Other Stories’ (2014) received rave reviews. ‘Beyond the Gate’ is their second album. On it, the mystery and wonder of the mystical world are brought to life. Because the band signed with the label Epictronic, you can pre-order not only the CD but also the vinyl. If you don’t want to wait that long, you can already buy the digital version now.
The title track starts softly, with the ringing of a church bell and bird sounds, this slowly gets a little louder. You might have to get used to new singer Benj’s own sound of voice. The intro of ‘Magician’ is catchy. There is a fairly gradual transition to a quieter part. There are nice changes and details in the music, such as stacked vocals. The somewhat heavier and/or up-tempo pieces are mostly instrumental. This keeps vocals and music in balance. In a quieter part, there are acoustic guitar sounds. The layers of the music are nicely spread over the headphones. The frivolous details of the violin come into their own just fine. In certain parts, the drumming is tight, but always in service of it all. The sudden ending is well chosen.
At the beginning of’ Guarded Secret’, some of the music lacks some warmth. In the high notes, the vocals become a bit sharp. In the lower notes, Benj’s voice is warmer. At times, there are quite a lot of layers in the music. This proggy epic has many twists and turns and various styles. There are beautiful, extended instrumental parts. It does take some time before you get to know this well-constructed track a bit. The solo vocals are surprising. The build-up to the end is nicely extended.
‘Illusion’ starts with sampling of seabirds and water, among other things. The music and vocals that join it later are suitably calm. Woven into this calm are “secretly” quite a lot of details. ‘Compound The Problem’ starts with a short piece of sampling, followed by a pleasantly extended instrumental section. The balance between the highs and lows is good. Vocals and music remain in balance.
The sound of singing birds, suits the intro of ‘Secret Garden’. The music is quiet at first, then the tempo speeds up a little. Once again, the drumming stands out positively. The electronic aspect of the keys comes to the fore. The violin playing merges nicely with the rest of the music. This epic also has many twists and turns, but the flow remains pleasant throughout. The build-up to the end, helped by the sparkling piano sounds, is beautiful. Though the dying away last note could have been just a little longer.
‘Last Orders’ begins with the sound of people murmuring, followed by melancholic piano playing, among other things. The “strings” meld nicely with vocals and piano. These quieter pieces alternate with rousing sections. The transition to a minimalist piece is beautiful. It remains minimalist until the end.
Usually the sampling is only at the beginning of the tracks. Not everywhere the added value is immediately felt. The background vocals are sometimes a bit sweet. Certain piano sounds lack some warmth. At other times, the piano playing has a nice timbre. There are few pieces where certain instruments come to the fore, mostly everything melts together nicely. But you do hear them, as does (bass) guitar. Newcomer Tom Mear’s drumming is very good. Despite having many layers, details and twists at times, everything listens surprisingly easily. At times, it is almost unnoticeable that it is quite complex.

De Engelse prog band ‘The Mighty Bard’ bestaat ongeveer 19 jaar. Hun debuut album ‘Blue God and Other Stories’ (2014) kreeg lovende reacties. ‘Beyond the Gate’ is hun tweede album. Hierop worden het mysterie en het wonder van de mystieke wereld tot leven gebracht. Doordat de band tekende met het label Epictronic kun je niet alleen een pre-order plaatsen voor de cd, maar ook voor het vinyl. Als je niet zo lang wilt wachten, dan kan je nu al de digitale versie kopen.
De titeltrack start zacht, met het luiden van een kerkklok en vogel geluiden, dit wordt langzaam iets luider. Misschien moet je even wennen aan het eigen stemgeluid van de nieuwe zanger Benj. Het intro van ‘Magician’ is pakkend. Er is een vrij geleidelijke overgang naar een rustiger deel. Er zijn mooie veranderingen en details in de muziek, zoals gestapelde zang. De wat zwaardere en/of up-tempo stukken zijn overwegend instrumentaal. Zo blijven zang en muziek in balans. In een wat rustiger deel zijn er akoestische gitaar klanken. De laagjes van de muziek zijn prima verdeeld over de koptelefoon. De frivole details van de viool komen prima tot zijn recht. In bepaalde delen is het drumwerk strak, maar altijd in dienst van het geheel. Het plotselinge einde is goed gekozen.
Aan het begin van’ Guarded Secret’ mist een deel van de muziek wat warmte. In de hoge zang wordt de zang een beetje scherp. In de lagere tonen is de stem van Benj warmer. Met vlagen zijn er best veel laagjes in de muziek. Deze proggy epic heeft veel wendingen en diverse stijlen. Er zijn mooie, uitgebreide instrumentale delen. Het duurt wel even voordat je deze goed opgebouwde track een beetje gaat kennen. De solo zang is verrassend. De opbouw naar het einde is lekker uitgebreid.
‘Illusion’ start met sampling van onder andere zeevogels en water. De muziek en zang die er later bij komen zijn passend kalm. In deze kalmte zijn “stiekem” best veel details in verweven. ‘Compound The Problem’ start met een kort stukje sampling, hierna volgt een aangenaam uitgebreid instrumentaal deel. De balans tussen de hoge en lage tonen is goed. Zang en muziek blijven in evenwicht.
Het geluid van fluitende vogels, past bij het intro van ‘Secret Garden’. De muziek is eerst rustig, daarna gaat het tempo wat omhoog. Het drumwerk valt nogmaals positief op. De elektronische kant van de toetsen komt naar de voorgrond. Het vioolspel smelt mooi samen met de overige muziek. Ook deze epic heeft veel wendingen, maar de flow blijft de hele tijd aangenaam. De opbouw naar het einde is, mede door de sprankelende pianoklanken, mooi. Al had de wegstervende laatste toon net iets langer mogen duren.
‘Last Orders’ begint met het geluid van “geroezemoes” van mensen, onder andere gevolgd door melancholisch pianospel. De “strijkers” smelten mooi samen met zang en piano. Deze rustigere stukken worden afgewisseld met opzwepende delen. De overgang naar een minimalistisch stuk is mooi. Het blijft minimalistisch tot het eind.
Meestal zit de sampling alleen aan het begin van de tracks. Niet overal is de toegevoegde waarde meteen voelbaar. De achtergrondzang is soms wat zoet. Bepaalde piano klanken missen wat warmte. Op andere momenten heeft het pianospel een mooi timbre. Er zijn weinig stukken waarin bepaalde instrumenten naar de voorgrond komen, meestal smelt alles mooi samen. Maar je hoort ze wel degelijk, dat geldt ook voor (bas)gitaar. Het drumwerk van nieuwkomer Tom Mear is zeer goed. Ondanks dat de muziek met vlagen veel laagjes, details en wendingen heeft, luistert het geheel verrassend makkelijk weg. Het valt soms bijna niet op dat het best complex in elkaar zit.
