Volgend jaar bestaat het post progressieve ‘The Black Noodle Project (TBNP)’ alweer 20 jaar.
In der loop der jaren is hun alternatieve muziek geëvolueerd. Hun inspiratie komt van stijlen zoals New wave, Post Punk en Art Rock en zelfs wat prog metal. Alsof dat nog niet genoeg is, hebben deze mannen voor hun nieuwe album Code 2.0 ook nog wat filmische effecten gebruikt. Ieder album is anders: nu is er veel meer gitaarspel, maar minder zang/gesproken woorden te horen. Het beetje zang en de gesproken woorden die er zijn, zijn voor het eerst in het Frans. Code 2.0 vormt min of meer de soundtrack van de reis naar je eigen ik.

‘Code 2.0’ opent heel kalm en mysterieus met ‘Acte I’. De muziek heeft me meteen in zijn greep. De wending naar het stevigere werk is onverwacht maar super. De veranderingen blijven komen, meestal verlopen ze vloeiend. De melodie is heerlijk en brengt je in een aangename flow. Door de goede geluidskwaliteit komen de contrasten tussen de metal invloeden en het akoestische gitaarspel prima tot zijn recht. Deze openingstrack eindigt kalm.

‘Acte II’ heeft een pakkend ritme, maar de muziek is in eerste instantie vrij rustig. Ook nu zijn er volop veranderingen binnen de muziek. Deze lopen van rock/metal naar akoestisch. Toch blijft alles in harmonie.
Het intro van ‘Acte III’ is dromerig en meeslepend. De details op de achtergrond zijn mooi. De cimbalen zijn zacht en gedetailleerd bespeeld. De toespraak van Victor Hugo uit 1849 haalt me even uit de heerlijke flow. Deze toespraak wordt een paar keer afgewisseld met instrumentale stukken. De vraag of ik de toespraak wel of niet vind passen in het geheel is vergeten zodra ik de eerste klanken van ‘Acte IV’ hoor.
Weer neemt TBNP me helemaal in beslag. De muziek zit fantastisch in elkaar, de laagjes gitaarspel zijn prachtig. Over ieder detail in de muziek is duidelijk nagedacht. Op het einde hoor je de mooie warme klanken van akoestisch gitaar.

Ook in ‘Acte V’ ben ik vanaf de eerste noot geboeid, ik reis als het ware mee op in de cadans van de intrigerende muziek. De vrolijke kinderstemmetjes in ‘Acte VI’ brengen een glimlach op mijn gezicht. De muziek die hierop volgt is rustgevend en meeslepend tegelijk. De kinderstemmetjes zijn zo nu en dan op de achtergrond te horen. Deze tedere, ontroerende track zit ijzersterk in elkaar.

De fluisterende woorden in ‘Acte Final’ sluiten aan bij de muziek. Als de drums erbij komen gaat de zang mee in de kleine toename in volume en tempo. De intensiteit van de muziek wordt langzaam opgebouwd. De zang blijft op een gegeven moment meer op de achtergrond, maar het geheel blijft in balans. Dit laatste nummer eindigt minimalistisch.

Als ik het album in één woord zou samenvatten zou dat “wow” zijn. Vooral het gitaarspel heeft variatie, daarom zullen fans bijvoorbeeld van Airbag/ Bjørn Riis dit album zeker waarderen. De complexe muziek heeft ongemerkt soms heel wat laagjes, toch luistert het makkelijk weg. Het is heerlijk om met de koptelefoon naar ‘Code 2.0 te luisteren en even helemaal in je ‘eigen wereld’ te zijn. Maar het is ook super om via de speakers te luisteren en de volumeknop flink open te draaien. Hoe je ook naar The Black Noodle Project wilt luisteren, deze fantastische muziek is om intens naar te luisteren en van te genieten. Zittend op de bank met alleen de muziek en verder niks. Meer heb je soms niet nodig.

The Black Noodle Project- Code 2.0

Next year the post progressive ‘The Black Noodle Project (TBNP)‘ already will celebrate its 20th anniversary.
Over the years their alternative music has evolved. Their inspiration comes from styles like New wave, Post Punk and Art Rock and even some prog metal. As if that is not enough, these guys used some cinematic effects for their new album Code 2.0 as well. Every album is different: now there’s a lot more guitar playing, but less vocals/spoken words. The little bit of vocals and the spoken words there are, are in French for the first time. Code 2.0 forms a kind of soundtrack of the journey to inner self.

Code 2.0‘ opens very calm and mysterious with ‘Acte I‘. The music immediately captures me. The twist to the heavier piece is unexpected but super. The changes keep coming, usually they are fluent. The melody is delightful and brings you into a pleasant flow. Because of the good sound quality, the contrasts between the metal influences and the acoustic guitar playing come into their own. This opening track ends calmly.

‘Acte II‘ has a catchy rhythm, but the music is quite quiet at first. Also now there are plenty of changes within the music. These go from rock/metal to acoustic. Yet everything remains in harmony.
The intro of ‘Acte III‘ is dreamy and compelling. The details in the background are beautiful. The cymbals are played gently and in detail. Victor Hugo’s speech from 1849 takes me out of the delightful flow. This speech is interspersed a few times with instrumental pieces. The question whether or not I like the speech is forgotten as soon as I hear the first sounds of ‘Acte IV‘.
Again, TBNP occupies me completely. The music is fantastic, the layers of guitar playing are beautiful. Every detail in the music is clearly thought through. At the end you hear the beautiful warm sounds of acoustic guitar.

Also, in ‘Acte V‘ I am captivated from the first note, I travel along in the cadence of the intriguing music as it were. The cheerful children’s voices in ‘Acte VI‘ bring a smile on my face. The music that follows is soothing and compelling at the same time. The children’s voices can occasionally be heard in the background. This tender, touching track is ‘solid as a rock’.

The whispering words in ‘Acte Final‘ match the music. When the drums come along, the vocals go along with the small increase in volume and tempo. The intensity of the music is slowly built up. At a certain moment the vocals stay more in the background, but the whole remains in balance. This last song ends minimalistic.

If I would summarize the album in one word it would be “wow”. Especially the guitar playing has variation, that’s why fans of Airbag/Bjørn Riis, for example, will certainly appreciate this album. Sometimes the complex music has a lot of unnoticed layers yet it easily listens with ease.
It’s wonderful to listen to ‘Code 2.0‘ with the headphones and be in your ‘own world’ for a while. But it’s also superb to listen through the speakers and turn up the volume. No matter how you want to listen to The Black Noodle Project, this fantastic music is for intense listening and enjoyment. Sitting on the couch with just the music and nothing else. That’s all you need sometimes.
