The prog band ‘The Ancestry Program’ is from Germany. The band consists of six people, several of whom are multi-instrumentalists. ‘Of Silent Mammalia Part 1’ was released in 2021. Its follow-up ‘Of Silent Mammalia Part 2’ was actually scheduled for autumn 2022. But due to the complexity of the album, that turned out not to be achievable. Because saxophone, brass and various string instruments were added into the mix. The loose concept is the sequel to volume 1. The baleen whale has set himself the task of saving the earth.

‘Mysticeti Ambassador’ has an unconventional start. The vocals are sober and low. Non stop it transitions to ‘Path of Inspiration’, first the music is melancholic. The alternation and/or melange of lighter and heavier music is beautiful. The heavier music incorporates deep low notes. The drumming is very good. Sometimes there are brief changes in tempo, musical style and atmosphere. Occasionally, the music seems to go against each other. Because of the unusual structure, it is somewhat less accessible. Right in the background is the sound of wind instruments. Just before the end, soft vocals join the quiet atmosphere. ‘Pangreta’s Box’ also has an unusual start of high and low notes mixed together. Not only in the music, but also in the vocals, there are contrasts. These range from friendly to grim, with some grunts. Ben Knabe has the lead vocals. This is complemented by as many as four band members also doing backing vocals. All the lyrics are pretty easy to read. The colours and images of the lyrics booklet are not sea-themed. This is unnecessary as aspects of everyday life are covered. Quiet sections are interspersed with some more hectic ones. The “string instruments” are light in sound, in addition you can hear cool bass grooves and high notes from the keys, among other things. So there is quite a lot coming towards you.

The atmosphere at the beginning of ‘War is Over’ is quite upbeat. But melancholy and sobriety also feature in the (stacked) vocals and in the music. Sampling forms the transition to ‘Maria’s Smile’. This calm song showcases the band’s diversity. The diver sings part of the lyrics, the whales also have a part in the vocals. The difference in voices is not very big. As a result, you don’t immediately notice the interaction in vocals. This song has fewer twists and turns and is sweeter in mood. Cool guitar playing provides some rock, just before the end there is a transition to a dreamy part.

The intro of ‘Ancestors’ seems to be inspired by 80’s synth. The transition to metal elements comes across as a bit messy. There is a lot of variation in both music and vocals. The lyrics are not easily understood, and the music is a bit tumultuous. The mix of styles is understandable, but sometimes a bit odd. The numerous changes keep coming even in the following songs. Not only rock, metal, old school prog, but also mysterious music, classical elements and cross overs to jazz come by. Finally, the title track. It all seems to be in a different phase…. brighter… But whether it really is. ..That’s where I think everyone can go and make his/her own interpretation. This album ends subdued.

The concept of ‘Of Silent Mammalia’ is somewhat loose, which is why the underwater feeling is hardly present. The lyrics can be interpreted in different ways. Because of the many twists and styles, this album is a bit less accessible. But the longer wait for its release is definitely worth it.

The Ancestry Program – Of Silent Mammalia Part 2

De prog band ‘The Ancestry Program’ komt uit Duitsland. De band bestaat uit zes personen, waarvan meerdere multi-instrumentalist. ‘Of Silent Mammalia Part 1’ kwam in 2021 uit. De opvolger ‘Of Silent Mammalia Part 2’ stond eigenlijk voor het najaar van 2022 gepland. Maar door de complexiteit van het album bleek dat niet haalbaar. Want in de mix zijn saxofoon, koperblazers en diverse strijkinstrumenten toegevoegd. Het losse concept is het vervolg op deel 1. De baleinwalvis heeft zichzelf de taak opgelegd om de aarde te redden.

‘Mysticeti Ambassador’ heeft een bijzondere start. De zang is sober en laag. Non stop gaat het over naar ‘Path of Inspiration’, eerst is de muziek melancholisch. De afwisseling en/of melange van lichtere en zwaardere muziek is mooi. In de zwaardere muziek zijn diepe lage tonen verwerkt. Het drumwerk is zeer goed. Soms zijn er kortdurende wisselingen in tempo, muziekstijl en sfeer. Af en toe lijkt de muziek tegen elkaar in te gaan. Door de bijzondere opzet is het wat minder toegankelijk. Helemaal op de achtergrond klinkt het geluid van blaasinstrumenten. Vlak voor het eind sluit de zachte zang aan bij de rustige sfeer. Ook ‘Pangreta’s Box’ heeft een bijzondere start van hoge en lage tonen door elkaar. Niet alleen in de muziek, maar ook in de zang zijn er tegenstellingen. Deze variëren van vriendelijk naar grimmig, met enkele grunts. Ben Knabe heeft de lead zang. Dit wordt aangevuld doordat maar liefst vier bandleden ook de achtergrondzang doen. Alle teksten zijn behoorlijk goed leesbaar. De kleuren en afbeeldingen van het tekstboekje hebben geen zee-thema. Dat is niet nodig omdat de aspecten van het dagelijkse leven aan bod komen. Rustige delen worden afgewisseld met wat meer hectiek. De “strijkinstrumenten” zijn licht van klank, daarnaast zijn er onder andere gave bass grooves en hoge tonen van de toetsen te horen. Er komt dus best veel op je af.

De sfeer aan het begin van ‘War is Over’ is vrij vrolijk. Maar melancholie en soberheid komen ook aan bod in de (gestapelde)zang en in de muziek. Sampling vormt de overgang naar ‘Maria’s Smile’. Dit kalme nummer laat de diversiteit van de band horen. De duiker zingt een deel van de tekst, ook de walvissen hebben een aandeel in de zang. Het verschil in stemmen is niet zo heel groot. Hierdoor heb je de wisselwerking in zang niet meteen in de gaten. Dit nummer heeft minder wendingen en is zoeter van opzet. Gaaf gitaarspel zorgt voor wat rock, vlak voor het eind is er een overgang naar een dromerig deel.

Het intro van ‘Ancestors’ lijkt geïnspireerd te zijn op de jaren ’80 synth. De overgang naar metal elementen komt wat rommelig over. Zowel in muziek als in zang is er veel variatie. De tekst laat zich niet makkelijk begrijpen, de muziek is wat onstuimig. De mix van stijlen is begrijpelijk, maar soms wat merkwaardig. De talloze wisselingen blijven ook in de volgende nummers komen. Niet alleen rock, metal, old school prog, maar ook mysterieuze muziek, klassieke elementen en cross overs naar jazz komen voorbij. Als laatste de titeltrack. Het geheel lijkt in een andere fase te zijn.. rooskleuriger.. Maar of dat werkelijk zo is.. Daar kan denk ik iedereen zijn/haar eigen invulling gaan geven. Dit album eindigt ingetogen.

Het concept van ‘Of Silent Mammalia’ is wat los, daarom is het onder water gevoel nauwelijks aanwezig. De teksten zijn op verschillende manieren in te vullen. Door de vele wendingen en stijlen, is dit album wat minder toegankelijk. Maar het langere wachten op de release zeker de moeite waard.
