The?Truth is the final part of ‘The?Book’. The concept of this trilogy is the critical view of (contemporary) fanaticism in religion. The story is sung by several character/guest vocalists, including Peter Jones (Camel, Tiger Moth Tales) and Elisabeth Markstein (Alphaville). ‘The?Truth’ was recently released on CD. The complete trilogy will also be released as a limited De deluxe artbook, in which the complete story is additionally clarified.

‘Revelations’ has a tightly played intro. You can hear the different voices of the characters. Grandfather grunts part of his lyrics, the other characters sing. You do need the textbook to understand the story well. But even without the textbook, it is clear that pregnancy plays a significant role. Rock is interspersed, or mixed with classical elements. The build-up to the end of the opening track is beautiful.
The sound of the instruments suits ‘Africa’. Shelena sings with her beautiful clear voice pretty much solo. The mood and instruments change, but the music remains balanced. Not all the voices differ much at first. You have to listen (or read along) a few times to know who is singing what. The flashbacks make it extra challenging to understand the story completely. But even without understanding everything, you can feel that things are happening here. Beautiful saxophone playing is followed by a transition to metal. The many twists and turns flow well, with a lot coming your way. At times the voices are stacked, this sounds fine. Instrumentally, at times there are many layers, at other times everything is more subdued.

The flashbacks are also there in ‘Hearing Voices’. ‘Alpha & Omega III’ is a dialogue between father and grandfather. It includes soundscapes, saxophone playing and various details of different instruments. At one point, this rather quiet song seems to end, but it is a twist. A little later, this slowly fades out.

The start of ‘Hallucinations’ is quiet. Again, there are several twists in tempo, volume and instruments. Among other things, there is wonderful and varied guitar playing. You might have to get used to one of the last changes and the special part (with the spoken words and sampling) that follows this.
This flows into ‘Hearts On Strings’, again there are some special transitions. This track is varied but uniquely constructed. There are quite a lot of volume changes. This might make it a bit of a search for the right volume if you listen with headset. ‘When You Get To See Me’ is one of the tracks that plays in the hospital. Tempo and volume are quite high at times. What all happens, I won’t reveal. But after a hectic section, the end is sudden. This forms a lovely contrast with the acoustic guitar sounds of ‘Hear My Voice’. After a transition to rock/metal, with vocal parts, there is a special turn to a quieter part. This feels like a phase between dreaming and waking up. The spoken words seem to come from far away, like in a dream. The sampled sounds fit this mood.

The blend of voices in ‘A Dream That Stayed’ is very attractive. Things are not going well for Evangeline. Again, you can hear the emotion in Samuel’s voice. You feel the emotion in the instrumental piece too. This complex trilogy seems to end, but another quiet piece with sampled sounds follows.

The CDs can also be listened to separately. But if you have a lot of time, listening to them back-to-back is quite special.

Seven steps to the green door – The?Truth

The?Truth is het laatste deel van ‘The?Book’. Het concept van deze trilogie is de kritische kijk op het (hedendaagse) fanatisme in religie. Het verhaal wordt door verschillende personages/gastvocalisten gezongen, waaronder Peter Jones (Camel, Tiger Moth Tales) en Elisabeth Markstein (Alphaville). ‘The?Truth’ is onlangs op cd uitgebracht. De complete trilogie komt ook uit als limited De luxe artbook, waarin het complete verhaal extra wordt verduidelijkt.

‘Revelations’ heeft een strak gespeeld intro. Je hoort de verschillende stemmen van de personages. Grandfather grunt een deel van zijn tekst, de andere personages zingen. Je hebt het tekstboekje wel nodig om het verhaal goed te kunnen volgen. Maar ook zonder tekstboekje, is het duidelijk dat een zwangerschap een grote rol speelt. Rock wordt afgewisseld, of gemengd met klassieke elementen. De opbouw naar het einde van de openingstrack is mooi.
De klank van de instrumenten passen bij ‘Africa’. Shelena zingt met haar mooie heldere stem zo goed als solo. De sfeer en de instrumenten veranderen, maar de muziek blijft in balans. Niet alle stemmen verschillen in eerste instantie veel van elkaar. Je moet een paar keer luisteren (of meelezen) om te weten wie wat zingt. Door de flashbacks is het een extra uitdaging om het verhaal helemaal te volgen. Maar ook zonder alles te begrijpen, voel je dat hier het een en ander gebeurt. Na mooi saxofoonspel volgt een overgang naar de metal. De vele wendingen verlopen goed, er komt heel wat op je af. Met vlagen zijn de stemmen gestapeld, dit klinkt prima. Instrumentaal zijn er soms veel laagjes, op andere momenten is het geheel meer ingetogen.

De flashbacks zijn er ook in ’Hearing Voices’. ’Alpha & Omega III’ is een dialoog tussen vader en grootvader. Het bevat onder andere soundscapes, saxofoonspel en diverse details van verschillende instrumenten. Op een gegeven moment lijkt dit vrij rustige nummer te eindigen, maar het is een wending. Even later dooft dit langzaam uit.

De start van ‘Hallucinations’ is rustig. Ook hier zijn er diverse wendingen in tempo, volume en instrumenten. Er is onder andere gaaf en gevarieerd gitaarspel. Misschien moet je even wennen aan één van de laatste veranderingen en het bijzondere deel (met de gesproken woorden en sampling) wat hier op volgt.
Dit loopt over naar ‘Hearts On Strings’, weer zijn er enkele bijzondere transities. Deze track is gevarieerd, maar eigenzinnig opgebouwd. Er zijn best veel volumewisselingen. Hierdoor is het misschien even zoeken naar het juiste volume als je met headset luistert. ‘When You Get To See Me’ is één van de tracks die in het ziekenhuis afspeelt. Tempo en volume liggen soms behoorlijk hoog. Wat er allemaal gebeurt, dat verklap ik niet. Maar na een hectisch deel is het einde is plotseling. Dit vormt een mooi contrast met de akoestische gitaarklanken van ‘Hear My Voice’. Na een overgang naar nog rock/metal, met vocale delen is er een bijzondere wending naar een rustiger deel. Dit voelt als een fase waar je tussen dromen en wakker worden in zit. De gesproken woorden lijken van ver te komen, als in een droom. De gesampelde geluiden passen bij deze sfeer.

De blend van stemmen in ‘A Dream That Stayed’ is erg mooi. Het gaat niet goed met Evangeline. Weer hoor je de emotie in de stem van Samuel. Ook in het instrumentale stuk voel je de emotie. Deze complexe trilogie lijkt te eindigen, maar er volgt nog een rustig stukje met gesampelde geluiden.

De cd’s zijn ook afzonderlijk te beluisteren. Maar als je veel tijd hebt, dan is achter elkaar luisteren wel heel bijzonder.
