Riverside is a highly acclaimed prog rock band from Poland. Live, their music comes out even better than on their studio albums. Anyone who has seen Riverside live before, or has their previous live album, knows this is absolutely true. Several songs on this live CD come from their previous album ‘ID.Entity’
The album starts with cheers and claps, you can feel the vibe of what is about to happen. First up is ‘#Addicted’. The intro is different and longer than on the album ‘Love, fear and the Time Machine’. Soon I am completely ‘into the music’. It takes about four minutes before Mariusz starts singing. This live version is a bit ‘rougher’ than on the study album. The interaction with the audience can not only be heard, but it is also palpable.
The cool bass grooves of ‘Panic Room’ (from the ‘Rapid Eye Movement’ album) contrast beautifully with the vocals and higher (keyboard) tones. Again, you notice the interaction between Riverside and the fans. The extended rest they incorporated into it, increases this sensation.

‘Big Tech Brother’ starts with recognisable, spoken words about accepting terms and conditions, here there is a slight resonance. The sound of vocals and music is well spread across the headset. Both the power parts and the minimalist sections are convincing, the twists and turns between these flowing superbly. The guitar playing is compelling, the bass and keys are pleasantly present. The drumming throughout serves everything. The bright vocals in the older ‘Lost’ are especially noticeable when the music is a bit more gentle. The build-up to more pace and volume is wonderful.
Already during the tender intro of ‘Left Out’, Riverside manages to touch me. Again, the turns are super, the instruments form a very good balance. You know the audience will join in when Mariusz sings ‘Ohohooo’… indeed it does, this is so beautiful to hear. The fast, complex prog part that follows is magnificent! You can hear and feel the enthusiastic reaction of the fans.

The second CD also features a couple of epics, including ‘The Place Where I Belong’. This one starts with bright vocals accompanied by a touch of music from acoustic guitar sounds, among others. The slow build-up to more pace and volume goes very well, the emotion in the music is palpable. At times, there is some delicious organ playing. The minimalist part is very well sung and played. The words Mariusz sings here toouches me. This live version is fantastic! So are the songs that follow. ‘Conceiving You’ includes compelling guitar playing and piano sounds. The instrumental piece has a lovely flow. Slowly it becomes more gentle, the whispered phrases forming an ultimate harmony with the calm music. The countdown to the moment of ‘the scream’ is extraordinary. The build-up to the end is wonderful. It’s a pity the CD ended, I could have listened to this for several hours more.

The sound of the music could have been a bit better, but the ratio in volume between the instruments is perfect. The vocals are not quite perfect throughout, but that doesn’t bother at all. Gentler played parts are wonderfully interspersed with up-tempo/power parts. The wonderful twitst and turns are played very well.
The interaction between Riverside and the audience can not only be heard, you feel the good vibe both in the power-filled parts and the subdued pieces. These beautifully complex songs come off even better live.

Riverside – Live ID

Riverside is een zeer gewaardeerde prog rock band uit Polen. Live komt hun muziek nog beter tot zijn recht dan op hun studioalbums. Wie Riverside als eens live heeft gezien, of hun vorige live album heeft, weet dat dit waar is. Een aantal nummers op deze live cd komt van hun vorige album ‘ID.Entity’
Het album begint met gejuich en klappen, je voelt de vibe van wat komen gaat. Als eerste is dit ‘#Addicted’. Het intro is anders en langer dan op het album ‘Love, fear and the Time Machine’. Al snel zit ik helemaal “in de muziek”. Het duurt zo’n vier minuten voordat Mariusz begint te zingen. Deze live versie is wat “ruiger” dan op het studie-album. De interactie met het publiek is niet alleen te horen, maar het is ook voelbaar.
De gave bas grooves van ‘Panic Room’ (van het album ‘Rapid Eye Movement’) vormen mooi contrast met de zang en de hogere (keyboard) tonen. Ook hier merk je de wisselwerking tussen Riverside en de fans. De uitgebreide rust die ze erin verwerkt hebben, verhoogt dit gevoel.

‘Big Tech Brother’ start met herkenbare, gesproken woorden over het accepteren van algemene voorwaarden, hier zit een een lichte galm op. Het geluid van zang en muziek is goed verdeeld over de headset. Zowel de power-delen als de minimalistische stukjes zijn overtuigend, de wendingen hier tussen verlopen geweldig. Het gitaarspel is meeslepend, de bas en de toetsen zijn aangenaam aanwezig. Het drumwerk is overal in dienst van het geheel. De heldere zang in het oudere ‘Lost’ valt vooral op als de muziek wat zachter is. De opbouw naar meer tempo en volume is prachtig.
Al tijdens het tedere intro van ‘Left Out’ weet Riverside mij te raken. Weer verlopen de wendingen super, de instrumenten onderling vormen een zeer goede balans. Je weet dat het publiek mee zal doen als Mariusz “Ohohooo” zingt.. dat gebeurt inderdaad, dit is zo mooi om te horen. Het snelle, complexe prog deel wat hierop volgt is geweldig! Je hoort en voelt de enthousiaste reactie van de fans.

Ook op de tweede cd staan een paar epics, waaronder ‘The Place Where I Belong’. Deze begint met heldere zang, ondersteund met een vleugje muziek van onder andere akoestische gitaar klanken. De langzame opbouw naar meer tempo en volume verloopt zeer goed, de emotie in de muziek is voelbaar. Met vlagen is er lekker veel orgelspel. Het minimalistische deel is zeer goed gezongen en gespeeld. De woorden die Mariusz hier zingt komen binnen. Deze live versie is fantastisch! Dat geldt ook voor de nummers die volgen. ‘Conceiving You’ heeft onder andere meeslepend gitaarspel en pianoklanken. Het instrumentale stuk heeft een heerlijke flow. Langzaam wordt dat zachter, de gefluisterde zinnen vormen een ultieme harmonie met de rustige muziek. Het aftellen naar het moment van “de schreeuw” is speciaal. De opbouw naar het einde is gaaf. Jammer dat de cd is afgelopen, hier had ik nog wel uren naar kunnen luisteren.

Het geluid van de muziek had iets mooier mogen zijn, maar de verhouding in volume tussen de instrumenten is perfect. De zang is niet overal helemaal perfect, maar dat stoort totaal niet. Zachter gespeelde delen worden prachtig afgewisseld met up-tempo/power delen. De gave wendingen worden zeer goed gespeeld.
De wisselwerking tussen Riverside en het publiek is niet alleen te horen, je voelt de goede vibe zowel in de power-volle delen als in de ingetogen stukken. Deze prachtige complexe nummers komen live nog beter tot zijn recht.
