Poor Genetic Material is a prog band. For the album ‘Elsewhere’, they worked with a smaller line-up. As a result, there are some differences, but also definitely similarities with the earlier albums.

‘The Colour Of Happiness’ has a pleasant mid-paced start. The rhythm section has an important part which is nicely complemented by higher notes. Phil Griffiths has a clear pronunciation. His voice fits this rather quiet song just fine. At times, the vocals are stacked.

‘Elsewhere’ has a nice calming instrumental intro, the vocals suitably calm. The title track remains quiet for a while. There are several changes, including a transition to a slightly poppy section. The sound of the percussion is a bit chilly, but it is better in the mid-tempo part. Still, some dynamics are missing at times. The distribution and alternation between bass, guitars and keys is fine. The electronic sounds of the keys are widely featured. Instrumental and vocal parts alternate. At one point, this epic seems to end, but it is a twist. Most of the changes flow into each other. For a moment, the vocals have a different sound, but the harmony with the music remains. There are quite a lot of details, these are well spread over the headphones. Even the quiet part consists of quite a lot of layers, everything is nice and clear in sound.
When tempo speeds up again, you sometimes hear several layers in the vocals. After this, it fairly slowly dies out.

Also in ‘The Star’, the balance between high and low notes stands out positively. The ending is somewhat unexpected. The instrumental part in ‘Take-Off’ is quite quiet, yet there is quite a lot to listen to. Again, the vocals are well stacked. The alternation/interplay of (bass) guitar and keyboards also stands out positively here. The guitar playing is compelling at times.
The bass can be heard well in every song, as in ‘Comfort And Pain’. The sound in ‘Pages Turning’ flows nicely back and forth in the headphones. The contrasts between the fast highs and the low slow tones is well chosen. The rest is nicely inserted, with the ending extinguishing rather quickly.

The dreamy, instrumental start of ‘Stargazing’ slowly gets a little faster. As vocals join in, music slows down. Several variations in tempo and volume follow. Again, the bass plays an important role, contrasting well with the higher (faster) tones. This track also seems to end, but it’s a turn that might take some time to get used to. The other changes are more gradual. At times, the stacked vocals go against each other. The build-up to the end of the album is quite short.

A couple of tracks could have ended a bit more special, the way it fades out is sometimes very short. The intros are mostly nicely quiet. The distribution between instruments, and between vocals and music is good. Sometimes vocals and/or music go against each other. Yet it doesn’t feel hectic anywhere.
‘Elsewhere’ is generally a fairly quiet album.

Poor Genetic Material – Elsewhere

Poor Genetic Material is een prog band. Voor het album ‘Elsewhere’ is er met een kleinere bezetting gewerkt. Hierdoor zijn er wat verschillen, maar ook zeker overeenkomsten met de eerdere albums.

‘The Colour Of Happiness’ heeft een aangename start in mid tempo. De ritmesectie heeft een belangrijk aandeel wat prima aangevuld wordt met hogere tonen. Phil Griffiths heeft een duidelijke uitspraak. Zijn stem sluit prima aan bij dit vrij rustige nummer. Met vlagen is de zang gestapeld.

‘Elsewhere’ heeft een mooi rustgevend instrumentaal intro, de zang is passend kalm. De titeltrack blijft een tijdje rustig. Er zijn diverse veranderingen, waaronder een overgang naar een licht poppy deel. De klank van de percussie is wat kil, maar is wel beter in het mid-tempo deel. Toch mist er soms wat dynamiek. De verdeling en afwisseling tussen bas, gitaren en toetsen is prima. De elektronische klanken van de toetsen komt ruim aan bod. Instrumentale en vocale delen wisselen elkaar af. Op een gegeven moment lijkt deze epic te eindigen, maar het is een wending. De meeste veranderingen vloeien in elkaar over. Even is de zang anders van klank, maar de harmonie met de muziek blijft. Er zijn best veel details, deze zijn goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Ook het rustige deel bestaat uit best veel laagjes, alles is mooi helder van klank. Als tempo weer wat hoger ligt, hoor je soms meerdere laagjes in de zang. Hierna dooft het vrij langzaam uit.

Ook in ‘The Star’ valt de balans tussen hoge en lage tonen positief op. Het einde is wat onverwacht. Het instrumentale deel in ‘Take-Off’ is vrij rustig, toch is er best veel om naar te luisteren. Ook hier is de zang goed gestapeld. De afwisseling/het samenspel van (bas) gitaar en toetsen valt ook hier positief op. Het gitaarspel is soms meeslepend.
De bas is in ieder nummer goed te horen, zo ook in ‘Comfort And Pain’. Het geluid in ‘Pages Turning’ loopt mooi heen en weer in de koptelefoon. De contrasten tussen de snelle hoge en de lage langzame tonen is goed gekozen. De rust is leuk ingelast, het einde dooft vrij snel uit.

De dromerige, instrumentale start van ‘Stargazing’ wordt langzaam iets sneller. Als zang erbij komt vertraagt muziek. Er volgen verschillende variaties in tempo en volume. De bas speelt weer belangrijke rol, en vormt een mooi contrast met de hogere (snellere) tonen. Ook deze track lijkt te eindigen, maar het is een wending waar je misschien even aan moet wennen. De andere veranderingen verlopen geleidelijker. De gestapelde zang gaat soms tegen elkaar in. De opbouw naar het einde van de cd is vrij kort.

Een aantal tracks hadden wat specialer mogen eindigen, de manier van uitdoven is soms erg kort. De intro’s zijn meestal mooi rustig. De verdeling tussen de instrumenten onderling, en tussen zang en muziek is goed. Soms gaan zang en/of muziek tegen elkaar in. Toch voelt het nergens hectisch aan. ‘Elsewhere’ is over het algemeen een vrij rustig album.
