The multitalented guitarist Nick Fletcher has been a session musician for decades. This Briton plays with John Hackett, among others. Steve Hackett says that Nick is perhaps the best jazz rock guitarist in England. Moreover, Steve praises Nick’s incredible control and technique on classical guitar. On 26 March, Nick’s solo album ‘Cycles of Behaviour’ will be released, containing eight jazz fusion/prog rock songs. The leading theme is the current situation in the world, which is much broader than Corona alone.

‘Cycles of Behaviour’ starts catchy with the title track. The surprising thing is that the keyboards can be heard in abundance right away. In general, the turns are subtle. Next to Russ Wilson’s excellent drumming, you can hear Nick’s fantastic guitar playing, of course. But he never put himself too much in the foreground. Because of this, there is enough room for nice bass grooves and pleasant keyboard work. This instrumental track seems to die away, but it is a transition to a beautiful calmer piece. Then the end is unexpected after all. ‘Heat is Rising’ has a pleasant flow. Fans will of course immediately recognize John’s friendly singing voice. Also, in terms of music, there are influences of John Hackett. On the one hand, it is logical, because it is a very good combination. On the other hand, it might be less surprising. When John sings, the music is a bit less rocking, so vocals and music stay in balance.

The layers in ‘Hope in your Eyes’ melt together beautifully. When Russ starts drumming, his way of drumming fits in with the quiet atmosphere. The flute playing also fits in perfectly. The guitar playing forms a beautiful contrast with the dreamy atmosphere. The twists and turns flow into each other. The ‘sugary’ (background) vocals fit the whole. The organ playing gives ‘Tyrant and Knave’ more punch. The guitar play is finger licking. This rocking part (Tyrant) is based on Trump and Putin. There is a wonderful turn to the quiet part, ‘Knave’. This is about the supporters who follow their leaders. Certain rocking elements return, yet this instrumental track ends quietly. After the instrumental, slightly classical orientated and mysterious ‘Desolation Sound’ follows the uplifting ‘Interconnected’. You can hear John’s influences in both, vocals and music. Yet Nick really puts his own sound into it. In ‘Annexation’ there is a beautiful change from ‘ear-catching’ rustic music to rock. In this more heavy part you can hear a touch of classical music in the background. Despite the contrast, this forms a sublime blend that is reminding of Steve Hackett.

‘Philosopher King’ has a compelling start with calm vocals that fit in well. The division between instrumental and vocal parts is fine. In the background, beautiful, slightly classical elements are added regularly. Most of the twists and turns run smoothly into each other, but there is also an unexpected change to an up-tempo piece. This fast piece is sometimes slightly chaotic, but the balance is maintained.The transition to a quiet piece, with compelling guitar play, is superb. The turns keep coming, one even more beautiful than the other. The instrumental part gets deeper and deeper under my skin. The fade out of this fantastic epic is actually too fast.

Because of the returning elements in several songs, you would almost forget how complicated the songs are put together. There are all kinds of details in every song, such as the percussion. Some of them you only notice after a few listens. The songs on ‘Cycles of Behaviour’ are quite different from each other and yet they form a beautiful whole. Time after time, Nick’s versatile guitar work stands out. In general, he is underrated, it’s time to change that!

Nick Fletcher – Cycles of Behaviour

De veelzijdige gitarist Nick Fletcher is al decennia lang actief als sessiemuzikant. Deze Brit speelt onder andere bij John Hackett. Steve Hackett zegt dat Nick misschien wel de beste jazzrock gitarist van Engeland is. Bovendien roemt Steve de ongelooflijke beheersing en techniek op klassiek gitaar. Op 26 maart verschijnt Nicks soloalbum ‘Cycles of Behaviour’, waarop acht jazz fusion/prog rocknummers staan. Leidend thema is de huidige situatie in de wereld, en dat is veel breder dan Corona alleen.

‘Cycles of Behaviour’ begint pakkend met de titeltrack. Het verrassende is dat de toetsen meteen ruimschoots te horen zijn. Over het algemeen zijn de wendingen subtiel. Naast het prima drumwerk van Russ Wilson hoor je natuurlijk fantastisch gitaarspel van Nick. Maar hij heeft zichzelf nergens te veel op de voorgrond gezet. Hierdoor is er ruimte genoeg voor lekkere bas grooves en aangenaam veel toetsenwerk. Deze instrumentale track lijkt weg te sterven, maar het is een transitie naar een prachtig rustiger stukje. Dan is het einde toch nog onverwacht. ‘Heat is Rising’ heeft een aangename flow. Fans herkennen natuurlijk meteen de vriendelijke zangstem van John. Ook qua muziek zitten er invloeden in van John Hackett. Aan de ene kant logisch, want het is een zeer goede combinatie. Aan de ander kant is het misschien iets minder verrassend. Op momenten dat John zingt is de muziek iets minder rockend, zodoende blijven zang en muziek in balans.

De laagjes in ‘Hope in your Eyes’ smelten prachtig samen. Als Russ begint te drummen, sluit zijn manier van drummen aan bij de rustige sfeer. Ook het fluitspel past er perfect bij. Het gitaarspel vormt een mooi contrast met de dromerige sfeer. De wendingen vloeien in elkaar over. De zoete (achtergrond)zang past bij het geheel. Het orgelspel geeft ‘Tyrant and Knave’ meer pit. Het gitaarspel is om je vingers bij af te likken. Dit rockende deel (Tyrant) is gebaseerd op Trump en Poetin. Er is een gave wending naar het rustige deel, ‘Knave’. Dit gaat over de aanhangers die hun leiders volgen. Bepaalde rockende elementen komen terug, toch eindigt deze instrumentale track rustig. Na het instrumentale, licht klassiek georiënteerde en mysterieuze ‘Desolation Sound’ volgt het opbeurende ‘Interconnected’. Zowel in zang als muziek hoor je de invloeden van John terug. Toch legt Nick er wel degelijk zijn sound in. In ‘Annexation’ is er een prachtige verandering van ‘oorstrelende’ rustieke muziek naar rock. In dit meer heavy deel hoor je op de achtergrond een vleugje klassiek. Ondanks het contrast vormt dit een sublieme blend die doet denken aan Steve Hackett.

‘Philosopher King’ heeft een meeslepende start waarbij de rustige zang goed aansluit. De verdeling tussen instrumentale en vocale stukken is prima. Op de achtergrond zijn er regelmatig prachtige, licht klassieke elementen toegevoegd. De meeste wendingen lopen vloeiend in elkaar over, maar er is ook een onverwachte verandering naar een up-tempo stuk. Dit snelle stuk is soms licht chaotisch, maar de balans blijft bewaard. De overgang naar een rustig stuk, met meeslepend gitaarspel, is super. De wendingen blijven komen, de één nog mooier dan de ander. Het instrumentale deel nestelt zich steeds dieper onder mijn huid. De fade out van deze fantastische epic verloopt eigenlijk te snel.

Doordat er in diverse nummers terugkerende elementen zitten, zou je bijna vergeten hoe ingewikkeld de nummers in elkaar zitten. In ieder nummer zitten allerlei details, onder andere van de percussie. Sommige merk je pas op na een paar keer luisteren. De nummers op ‘Cycles of Behaviour’ verschillen behoorlijk van elkaar en toch vormen ze een mooi geheel. Keer op keer valt het veelzijdige gitaarwerk van Nick op. Over het algemeen wordt hij ondergewaardeerd, het wordt tijd dat daar verandering in komt!
