Voor wie toevallig weinig weet over Marillion volgt hier een korte inleiding. Deze band werd in 1979 opgericht door onder andere Steve Rothery. De bandnaam was eerst Silmarillion, maar om problemen met de erven van Tolkien te voorkomen werd de bandnaam al snel veranderd in Marillion. Begin jaren ’80 werd Derek Dick, beter bekend als Fish de nieuwe leadzanger. In 1983 kwam het debuutalbum ‘Script For A Jester’s Tear’ uit, en werd meteen een succes. Nog steeds wordt dit debuut gekoesterd. Daarom is nu een speciale uitgave gelanceerd. Zo kunnen we weer een keer terugblikken op de jaren ’80 van Marillion, met de studioversie en een live concert.

Fish weet je steeds binnen een paar seconden te raken met zijn stem. Maar ook qua muziek is Marillion briljant. De geluidkwaliteit is zoals we gewend zijn van ze: zeer goed. Hierdoor word ik één met de muziek. De klein gespeelde van ‘Script For A Jester’s Tear’ delen kruipen iedere keer onder mijn huid.

Ook in ‘He Knows You Know’ weet Marillion mijn aandacht constant vast te houden. ‘The Web’ met zijn heerlijk strakke intro is natuurlijk ook een fantastisch nummer. Zo nu en dan valt het Schotse accent van Fish op, en dan met name de uitspraak van de ‘r’. Vooral bij het woord ‘rudely’ uit de zin: ”Edgy eggs and queing cumbers, rudely wakened from their slumber”. Echte fans weten dat deze in uit ‘Garden Party‘ komt. Zij kennen immers alle songteksten van buiten. Dus zij weten ook dat er hierna nog twee nummers volgen, die vol zitten met allerlei wendingen. Beide prog nummers horen tot de categorie ear candy.

Maar er volgt nog meer lekkers. Wat dacht je van ‘Market Square Heroes’? Het blijft onvoorstelbaar, dat een debuutsingle zo goed kan zijn! Vanzelfsprekend zijn de nummers die volgen ook fantastisch, dat geldt helemaal voor de epic ‘Grendel’, die ruim 17 minuten duurt. Wat zit dit toch allemaal mooi in elkaar!
Naast studiowerk is er een uitgebreid ‘pakket’ live nummers aan toegevoegd. Dat is te horen aan het gejuich. Dan kondigt Fish, met zijn heerlijke Schotse accent ‘Garden Party’ aan. Ook nu is de geluidskwaliteit zeer goed. Er zijn enkele verschillen met de originele studioversie. Dat blijkt ook bijvoorbeeld uit ‘Three Boats Down From The Candy’, de emotie in de zang van Fish komt live nog beter tot zijn recht. Tussen de nummers vertelt Fish het een en ander. Vooral waarover het nummer gaat, dit voelt heel gezellig aan. Het is duidelijk dat ze, ook toen al, een warme band hadden met de fans. Marillion weet je steeds al aan het begin van ieder nummer te raken. En dat houden ze het hele nummer vast. Ooit waren het nieuwe nummers, nu is het een feest van herkenning.
Er wordt even meegeklapt tijdens ‘Forgotten Sons’, maar het strakke ritme is niet makkelijk. Deze live uitvoering is subliem. Dit komt onder andere door de timing van zang en muziek. En niet te vergeten door het super gitaarspel. ‘Market Square Heroes’ wordt volop meegezongen, terwijl er wordt meegeklapt wordt tijdens het intro van ‘Margaret’. Een vrolijke sfeer verspreidt zich via de boxen.
Dat je van een aantal nummers zowel de studioversie als de live versie hoort, is totaal geen probleem. Dit is extra lang genieten, waarbij zeker de live versies fantastisch zijn. Wat een geweldig concert moet dat toen geweest zijn!
Of dit speciale album een ‘must’ is…? Marillion weet steeds wat unieks uit te brengen, en nu weer. Dus is het zeker de moeite waard!

Again, the sound quality is very good. There are some differences with the original studio version. This is also evident in ‘Three Boats Down From The Candy‘, the emotion in Fish’ vocals is even better live. Between the songs, Fish tells a couple of things. Especially what the song is about, this feels very cosy. It is clear that they, even then, had a warm bond with the fans. Marillion always knows how to touch you at the beginning of every song. And they maintain that throughout the song. Once it were new songs, now it’s a feast of recognition.
People clap along during ‘Forgotten Sons‘, the tight rhythm isn’t easy. This live performance is sublime. This is partly due to the timing of vocals and music. And not to forget because of the super guitar playing. ‘Market Square Heroes‘ is being sung along a lot, while there is clapping along during the intro of ‘Margaret‘.
