Oiver Rüsing, has been the man behind the prog project Karibow for over 25 years. His latest album, ‘A Tribal Treat’ is another one man project. The album is new, but the songs are not. As the songs come from two previously released albums: from ‘Tribe’ from 2000, and from Tribal Avenue from 2001. These albums, of course, are out of stock. Oliver decided to re-record everything and put them together on a double release. As a result, this album has a whopping 20 tracks. Physically this album had been out for a while, the digital release was in February.

The opening of ‘Told’ is special, you hear a melange of music and sounds, followed by a turn to more tempo. As soon as Oliver starts singing you recognize his voice. But the Karibow style is also present in terms of music. There are various twists and turns, one time “pushing” one musical instrument forward, a moment later another, for example the bass. Everything is accessible, yet quite complex. This opening track has a nice unexpected ending. ‘Rain Kid’ has a pleasant flow. The instruments among themselves are well balanced. Moreover, vocals and music are also well spread. Again, there are several unexpected turns. Some pieces are sung and played with emotion.

The catchy rhythm makes me naturally move along with ‘Hey You (Ashes to Ashes)’. If this were played live, there would be an interaction with ‘he audience. The start of ‘Life Is More’ is very subdued, and it stays that way for a while. Almost imperceptibly there are some changes in tempo. For a moment the rhythm is exhilarating, only to change again to a smaller part played. Some more changes follow, including compelling guitar playing. The transition to a minimalist piece gets under my skin, and it stays that way through to the end. The catchy intro of ‘The Line Between’ is very different again. Oliver also does the backing vocals, which is a valuable addition. Moreover, you can hear his passion.

In the slower parts he can be understood (almost) word for word, which does justice to the lyrics of ‘Blessed’. The sound of a saxophone fits nicely into it all. This song also has a lovely ending. Every intro is different; most of them are captivating. The same goes for the intro of ‘Water’ for example. The first rhythm change is not very special, but the his other changes are. This song quietly extinguishes with sampling.

CD 2
Each song contains nice details, and/or elements, for example the piano sounds sprinkled through ‘Saint’. All songs are well constructed and have plenty of (unexpected) twists. The vocals are sometimes stacked, the guitar playing is regularly superb. These old songs may be (partially) unfamiliar to many Karibow fans. But they feel so familiar because the Karibow style is clearly audible.

The compelling intro of ‘Tribe’ , and the twist that follows are beautiful. Again the percussion is well done, also the harmony between melody (with flute playing) and rhythm is fine.
This balance can also be heard well in ‘Follow’, which begins very calmly. The rhythm is staccato for a while. The end is nicely unexpected. Because of manner of the construction you soon sing along with parts of ‘Point of View’. The last track is ‘Stories of the Dead,’ this too is more complex in structure than you would initially think. The minimalist parts are tenderly sung and played, and are nicely interspersed with rousing parts. The ending slowly dies away.

You already have so much to listen to from the music alone that the (listen) lyrics may initially pass you by. Sometimes everything is quite complex, but it remains easily accessible. The songs are well constructed and there are many twists in tempo or volume. The difference in volume between the quieter and the rocking parts might have been a little larger. But the sound quality is good and everything is fine spread over the headphones. Not only are the instruments balanced among themselves, vocals and music are also in harmony. ‘A Tribal Treat’ provides nearly two hours of listening pleasure.

Karibow – A Tribal Treat

Oiver Rüsing, is al ruim 25 jaar de man achter het prog project Karibow. Zijn nieuwste album, ’A Tribal Treat’ is weer een one man project. Het album is nieuw, maar de nummers zijn dat niet. Want de nummers komen van twee eerder verschenen albums: van ‘Tribe’ uit 2000, en van Tribal Avenue uit 2001. Deze albums zijn natuurlijk al lang uitverkocht. Oliver besloot alles opnieuw op te nemen en ze samen te voegen op een dubbel release. Hierdoor telt dit album maar liefst 20 tracks. Fysiek was dit album al even uit, de digitale release was in februari.

De opening van ’Told’ is bijzonder, je hoort een melange van muziek en geluiden, gevolgd door een wending naar meer tempo. Zodra Oliver begint te zingen herken je zijn stem. Maar ook qua muziek is de Karibow stijl aanwezig. Er zijn divers twists and turns, waarbij de ene keer het ene muziekinstrument naar voren “geduwd” wordt, even later weer een andere, bijvoorbeeld de bas. Het geheel is toegankelijk, maar zit toch best complex in elkaar. Deze openingstrack heeft een mooi onverwacht einde. ‘Rain Kid’ heeft een aangename flow. De instrumenten onderling zijn in balans. Bovendien zijn zang en muziek ook goed verdeeld. Ook nu zijn er diverse onverwachte wendingen. Sommige stukjes zijn met emotie gezongen en gespeeld.

Door het pakkende ritme beweeg ik als vanzelf mee met ‘Hey You (Ashes to Ashes)’. Als dit live gespeeld zou worden, zal er een interactie met het publiek ontstaan. De start van ‘Life Is More’ is heel ingetogen, en dat blijft een poosje zo. Bijna ongemerkt zijn er wat veranderingen in het tempo. Even is het ritme opzwepend, om weer over te gaan in een kleiner gespeeld deel. Er volgen nog wat veranderingen, waaronder meeslepend gitaarspel. De overgang naar een minimalistisch stukje kruipt onder mijn huid, en dat blijft zo tot en met het einde. Het pakkende intro van ‘The Line Between’ is weer heel anders. Oliver doet ook de backing vocals, dat is een waardevolle toevoeging. Bovendien hoor je zijn passie.

In de langzamere stukken is hij (bijna) woord voor woord te verstaan, waardoor de luistertekst van ‘Blessed’ goed to zijn recht komt. Het geluid van een saxofoon past prima in het geheel. Ook dit nummer heeft een mooi einde. Ieder intro is anders, de meeste zijn boeiend. Dat geldt ook voor het intro van bijvoorbeeld ‘Water’. De eerste ritme verandering is niet heel bijzonder, maar de zijn andere veranderingen wel. Dit nummer dooft met sampling rustig uit.

CD 2
Ieder nummer bevat leuke details, en/of elementen, bijvoorbeeld de pianoklanken die door ‘Saint’ gestrooid zijn. Alle nummers zijn goed opgebouwd en hebben volop (onverwachte) wendingen. De zang is soms gestapeld, het gitaarspel is regelmatig gaaf. Deze oude nummers zullen misschien veel Karibow fans (deels) onbekend zijn. Maar ze voelen zo vertrouwd omdat de Karibow stijl duidelijk hoorbaar is.

Het meeslepende intro van ‘Tribe’, en de wending die er op volgt zijn mooi. Weer zit de percussie goed in elkaar, ook de harmonie tussen melodie (met fluitspel) en ritme is prima.
Deze balans is ook goed te horen in ‘Follow’, dat heel kalm begint. Het ritme is een poosje staccato. Het einde is mooi onverwacht. Door manier van opbouw zing je al vrij snel mee met delen van ‘Point of View’. De laatste track is ‘Stories of the Dead’, ook dit complexer in elkaar dan je in eerste instantie zou denken. De minimalistische delen zijn teder gezongen en gespeeld, en worden prima afgewisseld met opzwepende delen. Het einde sterft langzaam weg.

Je hebt al zo veel om te luisteren naar de muziek alleen, dat de (luister) teksten in eerste instantie misschien langs je heen gaan. Soms zit het geheel best complex in elkaar, maar het blijft goed toegankelijk. De nummers zijn goed opgebouwd en er zijn veel wendingen in tempo of volume. Het verschil in volume tussen de rustigere en de rockende delen had misschien iets groter mogen zijn. Maar de geluidskwaliteit is goed en het geheel is prima verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Niet alleen de instrumenten onderling zijn in balans, ook zang en muziek zijn in harmonie. ‘A Tribal Treat’ zorgt voor bijna twee uur luister plezier.
