Singer/guitarist Jon Amor became known for ‘The Hoax’. He plays with DVL, Guy Forsyth’s band. In addition, with his Jon Amor Blues Group and solo, Jon released several albums. Recently, Jon Amor Trio’s ‘The Turnaround’ was released. This debut album features 11 blues-rock, roots rock songs, including a few covers. For example, ‘Tonight I’m Gonna Make You A Star’ by B.B. King.
First you hear the title track with its enjoyable, catchy intro. Not only does it contain lovely guitar playing, but the rhythm section is also very good. Tom Gilkes’ bass is well heard, and Jerry Soffe drums beautifully detailed. This opening track, with its sudden ending, sticks deliciously in your head. The lyrics of ‘Make You Mine’ are not too complicated and invite you to sing along. Especially in the chorus, you notice that it was written to be played live. You just feel where there will be interaction with the audience. Moreover, the instrumental piece offers room for improvisation during live show. While the unexpected ending is not easy to play perfectly live.
The flow of the instrumental intro ‘Miss James’ is enjoyable, the guitar has a ‘leading role’ here. Again, there are lovely bass grooves and the drum kit is played calmly. During a calm part, there is a good combination of the rhythm section and Jon’s voice. ‘I Know What You’re Using’ is pleasingly slow. During an instrumental section, tempo and volume increase slightly, but the laidback atmosphere is preserved. The songs that follow also have a fine flow. Some songs are a bit calmer, but ‘Sit & Wonder’ is rousing. The clapping is catchy; you automatically tap along to the rhythm. The intros have been well thought out, which you notice, for instance, in the special, calm intro of ‘She Thought I Was An Eagle’. This song by the Jon Amor Blues Group has undergone a true metamorphosis: surprising, but very successful. The faster guitar playing forms a good contrast with the rhythm section. Here, the intense vocals have a slightly rough edge.
‘Lovin’ Cup’ is catchy. This (covered) feel-good song has, up to and including the end, a nice build-up. The rhythm in ‘Nothing Coming Easy’ is again calm, yet there are nice details woven into it. The atmosphere of this last song is homely and casual.
The album was recorded live at ‘Crescent Records Studio, Swindon (UK). The sound is slightly on the dull side, but that doesn’t bother. You can feel the love for the music. The songs were written and/or played with a live performance in mind. The accessible and catchy rhythms and melodies soon stick in your head. The details and build-up ensure that the album remains captivating. The division between guitar, bass and drums is fantastic. There is not only cool guitar playing. But there are also plenty of delicious bass grooves and fine drums/percussion. Care has clearly been taken with the compositions, that includes the outros. Moreover, the tracklist order has been well thought out. In short, ‘The Turnaround’ is a very good album.

Zanger/gitarist Jon Amor werd bekend door ‘The Hoax’. Hij speelt mee bij DVL, de band van Guy Forsyth. Daarnaast bracht Jon met zijn Jon Amor Blues Group en solo, diverse albums uit. Sinds kort is ‘The Turnaround’ van Jon Amor Trio uit. Op dit debuutalbum staan elf bluesrock, roots rock nummers, waaronder een aantal covers. Bijvoorbeeld: ‘Tonight I’m Gonna Make You A Star’ van B.B. King.
Als eerste hoor je de titeltrack met zijn leuke, pakkende intro. Het bevat niet alleen heerlijk gitaarspel, maar ook de ritmesectie is erg goed. De bas van Tom Gilkes is goed te horen, en Jerry Soffe drumt mooi gedetailleerd. Dit openingsnummer, met zijn plotselinge eind, blijft lekker in je hoofd kleven. De tekst van ‘Make You Mine’ is niet al te ingewikkeld en nodigt uit om mee te zingen. Vooral aan het refrein merk je dat het geschreven is om live te spelen. Je voelt gewoon waar er interactie met het publiek zal zijn. Bovendien biedt het instrumentale stuk ruimte voor improvisatie tijdens live show. Terwijl het onverwachte eind niet makkelijk is om live perfect te spelen.
De flow van het instrumentale intro ‘Miss James’ is prettig, de gitaar speelt een belangrijke rol hier in. Weer zijn er heerlijke bass grooves en het drumkit wordt rustig bespeeld. Tijdens een rustig stukje is er een goede combinatie van de ritmesectie en Jon’s stem.‘I Know What You’re Using’ is aangenaam langzaam. Tijdens een instrumentaal stuk nemen tempo en volume iets toe, maar de laidback sfeer blijft bewaard. Ook de nummers die volgen hebben een fijne flow. Sommige nummers zijn wat rustiger, maar ‘Sit & Wonder’ is opzwepend. Het klappen werkt aanstekelijk, je tapt vanzelf mee in de maat. Er is goed nagedacht over de intro’s, dat merk je bijvoorbeeld aan het bijzondere, rustige intro van ’She Thought I Was An Eagle’. Dit nummer van de Jon Amor Blues Group heeft een ware metamorfose ondergaan: verrassend, maar zeer geslaagd. Het snellere gitaarspel vormt een goed contrast met de ritmesectie. De intense zang heeft hier een licht ruw randje.
‘Lovin’ Cup’ is pakkend. Dit (gecoverde) feel good nummer heeft, tot en met het einde, een leuke opbouw. Het ritme in ‘Nothing Coming Easy’ is weer kalm, toch zijn er leuke details in verweven.
De sfeer van dit laatste nummer is huiselijk en ongedwongen.
Het album is live opgenomen in ‘Crescent Records Studio, Swindon (UK). Het geluid is iets aan de doffe kant, maar dat hindert niet. Je voelt de liefde voor de muziek. De nummers zijn geschreven en/of gespeeld met een live performance in het achterhoofd. De toegankelijke en aanstekelijke ritmes en melodieën blijven al snel in je hoofd kleven. De details en de opbouw zorgen ervoor dat het album blijft boeien. De verdeling tussen gitaar, bas en drum is fantastisch. Er is niet alleen gaaf gitaarspel. Maar er zijn ook volop heerlijke bas grooves en prima drums/percussie. Er is duidelijk zorg besteed aan de composities, dat geldt ook voor de outro’s. Bovendien is er goed nagedacht over de volgorde van de tracklist. Kortom ‘The Turnaround’ is een erg goed album.
