Zo’n vier jaar geleden hebben toetsenist Sander Heerings en zanger Jan Willem Ketelaers ‘Into the open’ opgericht. Samen schreven ze het conceptalbum ‘Destination Eternity’. Dit gaat over de reis van de ziel naar zijn uiteindelijke bestemming om uiteindelijk het eeuwige leven te bereiken.

De eerste minuut van ‘Origins’ is rustgevend, alsof je in een soort droomtoestand bent. Dan komt er onder andere meeslepend gitaarspel bij. Deze instrumentale track dooft mooi uit.

Vervolgens is er de kalme start van ‘Birth’. Vrij snel komt de rock erbij. Jan Willem heeft een duidelijke uitspraak, je kan hem bijna woord voor woord verstaan. Hij laat je denken waaraan je misschien niet denken wilt: het leven is eindig. Hij zingt overtuigend, zijn woorden komen best wel binnen.
De achtergrondzang is zonder woorden, maar vormt een mooie aanvulling. Details uit het begin keren een aantal keer terug. Niet alleen zang en muziek zijn in balans, ook ritme en melodie vormen een eenheid. In deze eenheid zitten een aantal wisselingen, net als in het aantal laagjes in de muziek. Ondanks het ‘zwaardere’ onderwerp nodigt het wel uit om na een paar keer mee te zingen. Dit tweede nummer eindigt klein.

Ook ‘Once’ begint klein. Even lijkt de metal erbij de komen, maar dat is schijn. De woorden die Jan Willem zingt zijn best confronterend: hij zingt over de tijd die bijna voorbij is. Toch klinkt er optimisme in, het is immers ook een nieuw begin. Tijdens een ingetogen stukje hoor je op de achtergrond een baby zachtjes huilen.

‘Back To The Days’ gaat over de goede herinneringen. De sfeer is vrolijker in dit pop-rock nummer.

Het enige wat ik tot nu toe gemist heb in een aantal nummers is een stukje meer contrast tussen de rockende delen en de ingetogen stukken. Zowel qua volume als intensiteit. De rock had iets voller mogen klinken, en de ingetogen stukken iets meer helder. Dan was ik zeker één geworden met de muziek.

Toch raken zang en muziek mij in ‘Purpose’ door de manier waarop de ziel zijn gedachten de vrije loop laat. Wel mis ik hier de volumetoename in het rockende deel.

De strijkers, het langzame tempo en een kerkklok die slaat zijn in complete harmonie in ‘Judgement Day’. De zinnen in het Latijn, en de Engelse zingen worden tegen elkaar in gezongen, maar de balans blijft. De achtergrondzang sluit subliem aan bij de muziek. Plotseling is er een gave verandering naar een nieuw minimalistisch stuk. De woordeloze zang voelt als ‘engelenzang’ aan, de rustige muziek past daar prima bij.

‘Ride The Wind’ start ingetogen. De zang van Maria Catharina sluit hierbij aan. Haar woorden: “One day I will be with you again” bezorgen me kippenvel. Dit blijkt een liefdevol duet te zijn. De stemmen van Maria en Jan Willem vormen een mooie blend. Daarnaast is er ook een heerlijk portie rock.

De gevoelig gezongen woorden in ‘Half Song’ ontroeren me. De opbouw naar het einde is minimalistisch, maar mooi. Als de cd afgelopen is, blijf ik in stilte even nagenieten.

Het geluid her en der iets te vlak. Maar de verhouding tussen de instrumenten onderling is prima, bovendien is het mooi verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Details van een glockenspiel achtig geluid komt regelmatig terug. De mooie verhaallijn wordt met emotie overgebracht. De emoties veranderen, dat hoort bij het leven. Zang en muziek zitten op één lijn, dus de sfeer in de muziek verandert mee. ‘Destination Eternity’ gaat over leven en dood.
Het is mooi, maar verrassend toegankelijk verwoord en gespeeld. Toch weet ‘Into the open’ een gevoelige snaar te raken, chapeau!

Into the open – Destination Eternity

About four years ago keyboard player Sander Heerings and singer Jan Willem Ketelaers founded ‘Into the open‘. Together they wrote the concept album ‘Destination Eternity‘. This is about the journey of the soul to its ultimate destination to reach eternal life.

The first minute of ‘Origins‘ is soothing, as if you’re in some kind of state of dream. Then comes some compelling guitar playing. This instrumental track extinguishes nicely.

Then there is the calm start of ‘Birth‘. Pretty soon the rock comes along. Jan Willem has a clear pronunciation, you can almost hear him word by word. He lets you think about what you might not want to think about: life is finite. He sings convincingly, his words come in quite well. The background vocals are without words, but are a beautiful addition. Details from the beginning return a number of times. Not only vocals and music are in balance, also rhythm and melody form a unity. In this unity there are a several changes, just like in the number of layers in the music. Despite the ‘heavier’ subject it does invite you to sing along after a few times. This second song ends small.

Also ‘Once‘ starts small. For a moment the metal seems to join in, but it just seems that way. The words Jan Willem sings are quite confronting: he sings about the time that is almost over. Still, there’s optimism in it too, after all, it is a new beginning. During a subdued piece you can hear a baby crying softly in the background.

Back To The Days‘ is about the good memories. The atmosphere is more cheerful in this pop-rock song.
The only thing I missed so far in some of the songs is a bit more contrast between the rocking parts and the subdued parts. Both in volume and intensity. The rock should have sounded a bit larger, and the subdued parts a bit clearer. Then I would certainly have become one with the music.

Still, vocals and music touch me in ‘Purpose‘ because of the way the soul gives free rein to its thoughts. I do miss the increase in volume in the rocking part.

The strings, the slow tempo and a church bell that strikes are in complete harmony in ‘Judgement Day‘. The sentences in Latin and English are sung against each other, but the balance remains. The background vocals are in perfect harmony with the music. Suddenly there is a cool change to a new minimalist piece. The wordless vocals feel like angel voices, the quiet music fits perfectly with that.

Ride The Wind‘ starts subdued. The vocals of Maria Catharina are in line with this. Her words: “One day I will be with you again” give me goose bumps. This turns out to be a loving duet. The voices of Maria and Jan Willem form a beautiful blend. There is also a delicious portion of rock.

The sensitive sung words in ‘Half Song‘ move me. The build-up to the end is minimalistic, but fantastic. When the CD is over, I stay in silence for a moment to reminisce.

The sound here and there a bit too flat. But the relation between the instruments is fine, moreover it is nicely divided over the headphones. Details of a glockenspiel like sound comes back regularly. The beautiful storyline is conveyed with emotion. The emotions change, that’s part of life. Vocals and music are in sync, so the atmosphere in the music changes along with it. Destination Eternity is about life and death.
It is beautifully, but surprisingly accessible in words and plays. Yet ‘Into the open‘ reaches a sensitive touch, chapeau!
