Singer multi-instrumentalist Franck Carducci has been releasing albums for more than 20 years. In March, together with Mary Reynaud, he released the surprising album ‘Naked’, featuring minimalist arrangements. A few weeks later, ‘The Answer Live’ was released. This concert was recorded in September 2022 at De Boerderij, in Zoetermeer. (The Netherlands). The album ‘The Answer’, released in 2019, was not played in its entirety.

The first song you hear is ‘(Love Is) The Answer’. Immediately, the clear sound stands out. Franck has a pleasant voice and a clear pronunciation. The blend of the harmony vocals is good. For fans, this title track is of course a familiar one. The many twists in the music are well played. Among other things, there is lovely organ and guitar playing. ‘Closer to Irreversible’ comes from the album ‘Torn Apart’ (2015). The first piece is sensitively sung and played. The turn to more power is well played. Vocals and music are balanced. Drummer Léa Fernandez constantly matches her drumming energy. Again the good guitar playing stands out, in addition there are nice bass tones and once again fine organ playing. Everything is in service of the whole. Anyone who has already seen Franck live knows how much passion he and his band play with. They also manage to convey this passion on the CD.

Acoustic guitar playing and vocals give ‘The Betrayal of Blue’ a quiet start. Slowly but surely, the tempo and volume of this prog song are increased. Again, the rhythm section is good. After another turn, the beautiful Theremin playing of Mary Reynaud follows. If you have ever seen Franck live, you may see this particular section from the concert happening right in front of you. The build-up to the end is beautiful.
You can hear the fans from time to time, like during ‘A Brief Tale of Time’ where they clap along. Actually, it’s a pity it doesn’t come with a DVD. Because you miss seeing the theatrical aspects. Like in ‘The Angel’, where Mary stands on a dark stage. She gracefully moves the illuminated wings of her angel costume. The visual aspects are there in the old but still beloved ‘Alice’s Eerie Dream’. This prog song too has numerous twists and turns, which are well played. You catch the live experience.

Partly because of the rests and twists, ‘Asylum’ is not an easy song to play. But it doesn’t seem to be a problem for the band, as instrumentally it all sounds fine. In terms of vocals, it is also complex. Vocal parts are interspersed with extended instrumental parts. The more rousing ‘Slave to Rock ‘n’ Roll’ is followed by four more bonus tracks. Including ‘Mr. Hyde & Dr. Jekyll’ and the short, instrumental ‘November Rain’.

Franck has pushed the limits of his vocal ability, the vocals not entirely flawless throughout.
This is not disturbing, as you can hear and feel the passion with which he performs. Between songs, Franck tells something about the next song. He does this briefly and to the point, so it doesn’t get boring when you listen to the CD more often. The live shows are at times theatrical, which you obviously don’t see on CD. All the more reason to visit his live shows (again), tour dates are listed on his website and Face Book page. Moreover, the CD/DVD/Blue Ray ‘Tearing the tour apart’ is also still available.

Franck Carducci & the Fantastic Squad – The Answer Live

Zanger multi-instrumentalist Franck Carducci brengt al meer dan 20 jaar albums uit. In maart bracht hij, samen met Mary Reynaud het verrassende album ‘Naked’ uit, met minimalistische arrangementen. Een aantal weken later verscheen ‘The Answer Live’. Dit concert werd in september 2022 opgenomen in De Boerderij, in Zoetermeer. Het album ‘The Answer’ dat in 2019 uitkwam, werd niet integraal gespeeld.

Het eerste nummer dat je hoort is ‘(Love Is) The Answer’. Meteen valt het heldere geluid op. Franck heeft een aangename stem en een duidelijke uitspraak. De melange van de samenzang is goed. Voor de fans is deze titeltrack natuurlijk een bekende. De vele wendingen in de muziek worden goed gespeeld. Er is onder andere heerlijk orgel-en gitaarspel. ‘Closer to Irreversible’ komt van het album ‘Torn Apart’ (2015). Het eerste stuk is gevoelig gezongen en gespeeld. De wending naar meer power is goed gespeeld. Zang en muziek zijn in balans. Drummer Léa Fernandez past haar slagkracht constant aan. Weer valt het goede gitaarspel op, daarnaast zijn er mooie basklanken en nogmaals prima orgelspel. Alles is in dienst van het geheel. Wie Franck al live heeft gezien, weet met hoeveel passie hij en zijn band speelt. Deze passie weten ze ook over te brengen op de cd.

Akoestisch gitaarspel en zang geeft ‘The Betrayal of Blue’ een rustige start. Langzaam maar zeker worden tempo en volume van dit prog nummer opgeschroefd. Ook hier is de ritmesectie goed. Na weer een wending volgt het prachtige Theremin spel van Mary Reynaud. Als je Franck wel eens live hebt gezien, zie je dit bijzondere deel uit het concert misschien voor je. De opbouw naar het einde is mooi.
Je hoort de fans af en toe, zo ook tijdens ‘A Brief Tale of Time’ waar ze mee klappen. Eigenlijk is het jammer dat er geen DVD bij zit. Want je mist het zien van de theatrale aspecten. Zo ook in ‘The Angel’, waarin Mary op een donker podium staat. Ze beweegt gracieus de verlichte vleugels van haar engelen kostuum. De visuele aspecten zijn er in het oude, maar nog steeds geliefde ‘Alice’s Eerie Dream’. Ook dit prog nummer heeft talloze twists and turns, die goed gespeeld worden. De live beleving krijg je mee.

Onder andere door de rusten en de wendingen is ‘Asylum’ geen gemakkelijk nummer om te spelen. Maar het ijkt voor de band geen probleem, want instrumentaal klinkt het allemaal prima. Qua zang is het ook complex. Vocale delen worden afgewisseld met uitgebreide instrumentale delen. Na het meer opzwepende ‘Slave to Rock ‘n’ Roll’ volgen nog vier bonustrack. Waaronder ‘Mr. Hyde & Dr. Jekyll’ en het korte, instrumentale ‘November Rain’.

Franck heeft de grenzen van zijn vocale kunnen opgezocht, de zang is niet overal helemaal zuiver.
Storend is dat niet, want je hoort en voelt de passie waarmee hij performt. Tussen de nummers door vertelt Franck iets over het volgende nummer. Dat doet hij kort en bondig, zodat het niet gaat vervelen als je de cd vaker luistert. De live shows zijn met vlagen theatraal van opzet, dat zie je op cd natuurlijk niet. Reden te meer om (nogmaals) zijn live shows te bezoeken, de tour data staan op zijn website en Face Book pagina vermeld. Bovendien is de CD/DVD/Blue Ray ‘Tearing the tour apart’ ook nog verkrijgbaar.
