From childhood on singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Franck Carducci is tangling with music. In 2010 he opened a show for Steve Hackett, who advised Franck to start releasing his own music.
A year later Franck released his debut album ‘Oddity’. A number of songs from this album were written by him as a young adult. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of ‘Oddity,’ a limited edition will be released on vinyl May 18. Although he might have done some pieces differently now, he let these five songs as they were, they have only been remastered.

SIDE 1
There are several twists in the extended instrumental start of ‘Achilles’. Just before Franck begins to sing, the music slows down and softens. There are many beautiful details, and at times there are quite a few layers in the music. The sound is nicely distributed on the headphones, moreover the sound quality is good. Instrumental and vocal parts alternate. The (stacked) vocals form a constant unity with the varied music. The guitar playing becomes slightly screaming and the bass is nicely present. In the proggy up-tempo piece, the electronic side of the keys comes out. This flows into a calmer section that includes flute playing by John Hackett. Phildas Bhakta plays his cymbals beautifully softly. Slowly, the music transitions into great ‘seventies prog’. After another fantastic prog rock part, this epic seems to end, but vocals and music get almost fondly. This gradually evolves into acoustic guitar playing where you can hear fingers gliding over the strings. This cool opening track has a quiet ending.

‘The Quind’ starts with sampled storm sounds and piano playing. Again, there are plenty of changes in the music. Moreover, there are special details, including the didgeridoo and the sound of dripping water. This mysterious track with its beautiful (stacked) vocals ends with sampled sounds.

SIDE 2
‘The Eyes of Age’ is a very different track, the violin gives some folk influences. The instruments among themselves form a nice blend, the nice details come from the mandolin among others. The voices form a beautiful blend and fit the music very well. Occasionally some piano sounds are sprinkled through. The sudden ending is well chosen. ‘Alice’s Eerie Dream’ has become a crowd pleaser at live performances. The slightly rocking guitar play forms a great combination with the organ play. After a few twists and turns, Franck begins to sing. The true fans might largely know the lyrics. The cool instrumental piece includes a nice amount of guitar, organ and piano playing. There is a funky up-tempo part with a nice bass part in it, this flows back to (prog)rock. The extended build up to the end of this epic is energetic. This forms a great contrast with the quiet start of ‘The Last Oddity’. This track is inspired by ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, a 1968 science fiction book and movie. Therefore, the voice of ‘Ground Control’ is distorted. The music has several layers but remains quiet for a while. Tempo and volume build up to a pleasant flow. The space element can be heard from time to time. The changes are smooth, but the end is surprisingly unexpected.

The sometimes many layers in the music are well balanced. There are numerous twists and details. Occasionally the music is a bit bombastic, but everything remains accessible. This vinyl release is a must have for fans. For the vinyl lover who is still unfamiliar with Franck Carducci, this is a great opportunity to get acquainted with his music, because ‘Oddity’ is a good and varied prog album.

Franck Carducci – Oddity

Van jongs af aan is zanger, componist en multi-instrumentalist Franck Carducci al bezig met muziek. In 2010 opende hij een show voor Steve Hackett, deze adviseerde Franck om zijn eigen muziek uit te gaan brengen. Een jaar later bracht Franck zijn debuutalbum ‘Oddity’ uit.
Een aantal nummers van dit album schreef hij als jongvolwassene. Om de tiende verjaardag van ‘Oddity’ te vieren, komt 18 mei een limited edition op vinyl uit. Hoewel hij sommige stukjes nu misschien anders gedaan zou hebben, heeft hij deze vijf nummers gelaten zoals ze waren, ze zijn alleen ge-remastered.

SIDE 1
In de uitgebreide instrumentale start van ‘Achilles’ zitten diverse wendingen. Vlak voordat Franck begint te zingen wordt de muziek wat langzamer en zachter. Er zijn veel mooi details, en soms zijn er heel wat laagjes in de muziek. Het geluid is mooi verdeeld over de koptelefoon, bovendien is de geluidskwaliteit goed. Instrumentale en vocale delen wisselen elkaar af. De (gestapelde) zang vormt een constante eenheid met de gevarieerde muziek. Het gitaarspel wordt licht gillend en de bas is lekker aanwezig. In het proggy uptempo stuk komt de elektronische kant van de toetsen naar boven. Dit vloeit uit in een rustiger deel met onder andere fluitspel van John Hackett. Phildas Bhakta bespeelt zijn cimbalen mooi zacht. Langzaam gaat de muziek over in geweldige ‘seventies-prog’. Na nog een fantastisch prog rock stuk lijkt deze epic te gaan eindigen, maar zang en muziek worden bijna lieflijk van klank. Dit loopt geleidelijk over naar akoestisch gitaarspel waarbij je de vingers over de snaren hoort glijden. Deze gave openingstrack heeft een rustig eind.

‘The Quind’ start met gesamplede stormgeluiden en pianospel. Ook nu zijn er volop veranderingen in de muziek. Bovendien zijn er bijzondere details, waaronder de didgeridoo en het geluid van druppelend water. Deze mysterieuze track met zijn mooie (gestapelde) zang eindigt met gesampelde geluiden.

SIDE 2
‘The Eyes of Age’ is een heel ander nummer, de viool geeft wat folk invloeden. De instrumenten onderling vormen een mooie melange, de leuke details komen onder andere van de mandoline. De stemmen vormen een prachtige blend en sluiten prima aan bij de muziek. Af en toe worden er enkele pianoklanken doorheen gestrooid. Het plotselinge einde is goed gekozen.

‘Alice’s Eerie Dream’ is inmiddels uitgegroeid tot publiekslieveling bij liveoptredens.
Het licht rockend gitaarspel vormt een prima combinatie met het orgelspel. Na een aantal wendingen begint Franck te zingen. De echte fans kennen de tekst waarschijnlijk grotendeels. Het gave instrumentale stuk bevat onder andere lekker veel gitaar, orgel en pianospel. Er zit een funky up-tempo stuk met een lekkere bas partij in, dit vloeit terug naar de (prog)rock. De uitgebreide opbouw naar het einde van deze epic is energiek. Dit vormt een groot contrast met de rustige start van ‘The Last Oddity’. Deze track is geïnspireerd op ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, een science fictionboek en -speelfilm uit 1968. Daarom is de stem van ‘Ground Control’ vervormd. De muziek heeft meerdere laagjes maar blijft een tijdje rustig. Tempo en volume worden opgebouwd tot een aangename flow. Het space element is af en toe te horen. De veranderingen verlopen vloeiend, maar het einde is verrassend onverwacht.

De soms vele laagjes in de muziek zijn prima in balans. Er zijn talloze wendingen en details. Af en toe is de muziek een beetje bombastisch, maar alles blijft toegankelijk. Deze vinyl uitgave is een must have voor de fans. Voor de vinyl liefhebber die nog onbekend is met Franck Carducci, is dit een mooie gelegenheid om kennis te maken met zijn muziek, want ‘Oddity’ is een goed en gevarieerd prog album.
