Cryptex komt uit Noord Duitsland, drie van de bandleden zijn multi-instrumentalist. Hun prog rock is soms kalm, op andere momenten weer agressief. De melodieën variëren van pakkend naar virtuoos. ‘Once Upon A Time’ is het derde album in hun 12-jarig bestaan.

Na de rustige start van ‘Once Upon A Time’ worden tempo en volume langzaam opgebouwd.
De verwachte wending naar meer power verloopt minder intens dan verwacht. In dit iets zwaardere deel is het geluid van strijkinstrumenten te horen. Het evenwicht tussen hiertussen is goed. De zang heeft in eerste instantie een poppy sound, dit past bij de muziek. Even later blijkt dat de stem ook bij de rockende muziek past. De veranderingen in zang en muziek zijn geleidelijk. De klassieke elementen keren af en toe terug. Daarnaast is er zo nu en dan er koorzang. De wendingen blijven elkaar opvolgen. De opbouw naar het einde is goed.

‘Because The Reason Is You’ heeft aan het begin licht gillend gitaarspel met pianoklanken.
Dit vormt een mooie combinatie, hetzelfde geldt voor de mix van klassieke elementen met poppy invloeden die hierna volgen. Zowel de toonhoogte als de kleur van de stemmen vormen een bijzonder melange. In een klein gespeeld deel is de zang bijna solo. Door het pianospel verwacht je een gave opbouw naar het einde, maar dit is vrij eenvoudig.

De talloze veranderingen en de mix van verschillende stijlen en/of de contrasten binnen ‘Bloodmoon’ zorgen ervoor dat ook deze track blijft boeien. Het einde is hier mooi strak.

In ‘Body Language’ zijn er ook contrasten. De laag gesproken woorden hebben een licht accent. De vocale uithaal op het laatst is gaaf, maar had iets langer mogen duren.

Ieder nummer heeft onverwachte dingen, zo zijn er in ‘Two Horned Crown’ klanken van een saxofoon, en het geluid van strijkinstrumenten tussen de rock in verstopt. Het nummer eindigt bijzonder met een pianosolo.
De nummers zijn complex maar toegankelijk, ze zijn heel divers maar het evenwicht blijft. Een minpuntje is dat het drumwerk soms iets te vlak klinkt. Het drumwerk op zich is goed en in balans met de muziek.

‘I Don’t Know Why’ is eerst van melancholisch maar wordt op een gegeven moment vrij vrolijk. De zanger weet niet waarom hij terugverlangt naar zijn liefje. Het klein gezongen deel mooi, en gevuld met emotie. Met een mooie natrillende slag op de piano dooft dit nummer uit.

Het menselijke fluiten in ‘I See It In Your Eyes’ is verrassend en mooi gedaan, en past in de flow van het nummer.
Het sombere geluid van strijkinstrumenten en de lichte pianoklanken zorgen in ‘A Mo(u)rning’ voor een ongewone, maar mooie blend. Er worden enkele zinnen gefluisterd, tegelijkertijd zijn er enkele zwaar gespeelde klanken op piano te horen. Daarnaast klinken er kinderstemmen. Dan is er nog een zware, lage toon op van de piano…daarna is het stil. Deze track duurt nog geen anderhalve minuut, maar heeft wel degelijk impact.

Ook de depressief gesproken woorden van ‘Leaving’ maken indruk. Deze woorden worden intenser van klank, de muziek gaat mee in de hectiek. Plotseling is er een minimalistisch stukje van slechts enkele seconden. Dan is het stil; juist die stilte is indrukwekkend. Ik laat de stilte even op mij inwerken, beter had dit album niet kunnen eindigen.

Wie Cryptex nog niet kent, moet echt gaan luisteren! Hun muziek bevat talloze wendingen. En varieert van licht klassiek naar (heavy) rock met soms wat poppy en opzwepende elementen. ‘Once Upon A Time’ is een heel divers en boeiend prog album.

Cryptex – Once Upon A Time

At first the vocals have a poppy sound, this fits the music. A bit later it turns out that the voice also fits the rocking music. The changes in vocals and music are gradual. The classical elements return now and then. Next to that there is choir singing every now and then. The twists and turns keep following each other. The build-up to the end is good.

‘Because The Reason Is You‘ has slightly screaming guitar playing with piano sounds at the beginning.
This forms a nice combination, the same goes for the mix of classical elements with poppy influences that follow. Both the pitch and the colour of the voices form a special blend. In a small played part the vocals are almost solo. Because of the piano playing you expect a cool build-up to the end, but this is quite simple.

The countless changes and the mix of different styles and/or contrasts within ‘Bloodmoon‘ ensure that this track continues to fascinate. The end is nicely tight here.

In ‘Body Language‘ there are contrasts as well. The low spoken words have a light accent. The vocal outburst at the end is cool, but could have lasted a bit longer.

Every song has unexpected things, like in ‘Two Horned Crown‘ there are sounds of a saxophone, and the sound of string instruments hidden between the rock. The song ends very special with a piano solo.
The songs are complex but accessible, they are very diverse but the balance remains. A downside is that the drumming sometimes sounds a bit too flat. The drumming itself is good and in balance with the music.

‘I Don’t Know Why‘ is melancholic at first but becomes quite cheerful at a certain moment. The singer doesn’t know why he longs back to his sweetheart. The small sung part is beautiful, and filled with emotion. With a nice wet vibrating stroke on the piano this song extinguishes.

The human whistling in ‘I See It In Your Eyes‘ is surprising and beautifully done, and fits in the flow of the song.
The sombre sound of stringed instruments and the light piano sounds in ‘A Mo(u)rning‘ create an unusual but beautiful blend. Some sentences are whispered, at the same time some heavily played sounds can be heard on piano. In addition, children’s voices can be heard. Then there is a heavy, low tone on the piano…after that it is quiet. This track takes less than a minute and a half, but it does have an impact.

The depressively spoken words of ‘Leaving‘ also make an impression. These words become more intense in sound, the music goes along with the hectic. Suddenly there is a minimalistic piece of only a few seconds. Then it’s quiet; that silence is impressive. I let the silence work on me for a while, this album couldn’t have ended better.

Those who don’t know Cryptex yet, should really start listening! Their music has countless twists and turns. And varies from light classical to (heavy) rock with sometimes some poppy and rousing elements. Once Upon A Time‘ is a very diverse and fascinating prog album.
