Singer/multi-instrumentalist Bjørn Riis is best known for the band Airbag.
He has been releasing solo albums since 2014. His latest album ‘Everything to Everyone’, was launched April 8. This fourth album was also released on label Karisma Records.

‘Run’ has a rather rocking start, the sound of which is duller than expected.
A number of twists and turns flow into each other. The transition to a minimalist piece is nicely slow. Fans know Bjørn can do this so well. The music becomes spherical. There are several layers of (acoustic) guitar sounds. One guitar has a more sparkling sound than the other. The change to rock is sudden, the sound is a bit dingy. Certain elements of the beginning return. This instrumental opening track dies away very slowly.

The intro of ‘Lay Me Down’ is subdued. You can hear the emotion in Bjørn’s voice. His vocals are, as always, in harmony with the music. The sound of the whole is clear. The rhythm section provides a pleasant flow. This turns out to be a duet with Mimmi Tamba, it’s a nice blend of voices. During an instrumental section there is a fantastic interplay between beautiful subdued parts and rocking elements. There are some repetitions in both parts. The instruments are very well distributed on the headphones, moreover, there are sometimes quite a lot of layers. For a moment the song seems to doze off, but the build up to the end is longer than expected. Also in ‘The Siren’ the vocals are in complete harmony with tenderly played piano and guitar. The same goes for the appropriately slowly played drums. The voices of Bjørn and Mimmi melt together beautifully. Fantastic instrumental pieces are interspersed with some shorter vocal parts.

The repetitive, rather fast percussion in ‘Every Second Every Hour’ is quite far in the background. That’s a good thing because otherwise it would have taken too much attention away from the rest of the music. The vocals sound distorted for a short time. During a subdued instrumental section, the repetitions create a wonderful flow. The details and twists and turns keep it captivating. The end of this epic seems too abrupt, but that’s because the volume drops quickly. A soft beat partially guides ‘Descending’. The multiple layers of guitar playing are compelling. As tempo and volume increase, the sound is suddenly very dingy. This is not comfortable with headphones. There is some restlessness in the music, while the acoustic guitar playing can still be heard in the background. The balance is not quite there. Just as suddenly as the dingy effects came in, they are gone again. Moments later, there is another turn to more volume. Again, part of the music has a dull layer. After the change to a quiet part, the sound is clear again. The ending is cut off far too abruptly.

The first part of ‘Everything to Everyone’ is quiet, again this is a duet. The vocals are sometimes used as instruments in the background. The combination and/or alternation of acoustic and electric guitar is super. At one point the sound is a bit dull again but the high notes of the piano are clear. At the end the song is calm again, but again the end is cut off a bit too early.

If you listen with headphones it is sometimes difficult to find an appropriate volume. But these volume differences make listening extra fascinating. Compared to the previous albums, certain pieces are a bit disappointing. But fortunately there is also much to enjoy. For example, from the variation in the number of layers in the music, and the way they are distributed on the headphones.

Bjørn Riis – Everything to Everyone

Zanger/multi-instrumentalist Bjørn Riis is vooral bekend geworden door de band Airbag. Sinds 2014 brengt hij solo albums uit. Zijn nieuwste album ‘Everything to Everyone’, werd 8 april gelanceerd.
Ook dit vierde album kwam onder het label Karisma Records uit.

‘Run’ heeft een vrij rockende start, het geluid hiervan is doffer dan verwacht.
Een aantal wendingen vloeien in elkaar over. De overgang naar een minimalistisch stuk verloopt mooi langzaam. Fans weten dat Bjørn dit zó goed kan. De muziek wordt sferisch. Er zijn meerdere laagjes (akoestische) gitaar klanken. De ene gitaar heeft een wat meer sprankelend geluid van de andere. De verandering naar rock is plotseling, het geluid is wat groezelig. Bepaalde elementen van het begin keren terug. Deze instrumentale openingstrack sterft heel langzaam weg.

Het intro van ‘Lay Me Down’ is ingetogen. Je hoort de emotie in de stem van Bjørn. Zijn zang is zoals altijd in harmonie met de muziek. Het geluid van het geheel is helder. De ritmesectie zorgt voor een aangename flow. Dit blijkt een duet te zijn met Mimmi Tamba, het is een mooie blend van stemmen. Tijdens een instrumentaal deel ontstaat een fantastische wisselwerking tussen prachtige ingetogen delen en rockende elementen. In beide delen zijn er wat herhalingen. De instrumenten zijn zeer goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon, bovendien zijn er soms best veel laagjes. Even lijkt het nummer te doven, maar de opbouw naar het einde is langer dan verwacht. Ook in ‘The Siren’ is de zang in volledige harmonie met teder bespeelde piano en gitaar. Dat geldt ook voor de passend langzaam bespeelde drums. De stemmen van Bjørn en Mimmi smelten mooi samen. Fantastische instrumentale stuken worden afgewisseld met enkele kortere vocalen delen.

De herhalende, vrij snelle percussie in ‘Every Second Every Hour’ is vrij ver op de achtergrond. Dat is goed ook anders zou het te veel aandacht hebben weggehaald van de overige muziek. De zang klinkt korte tijd vervormd. Tijdens een ingetogen instrumentaal deel zorgen de herhalingen voor een heerlijke flow. De details en de wendingen maken dat het boeiend blijft. Het einde van deze epic lijkt te beetje abrupt, maar dat komt omdat het volume snel daalt. Een zachte beat vormt deels de leidraad van ‘Descending’. De meerdere laagjes gitaarspel zijn meeslepend. Als tempo en volume toenemen is het geluid ineens wel erg groezelig. Dit is met koptelefoon niet aangenaam. Er is wat onrust in de muziek, terwijl het akoestische gitaarspel op de achtergrond nog te horen is. De balans is er niet helemaal. Net zo plotseling als de groezelige effecten erbij kwamen, zijn ze ook weer weg. Even later is er nieuwe wending naar meer volume. Weer heeft een deel van de muziek een dof laagje. Na de verandering naar een rustig deel is het geluid weer helder. Het einde is veel te abrupt afgekapt.

Het eerste stuk van ‘Everything to Everyone’ is rustig, ook dit is een duet. De zang is soms op de achtergrond ingezet als instrument. De combinatie en/of afwisseling van akoestisch en elektrisch gitaar is super. Op een gegeven moment is het geluid weer wat dof maar de hoge pianoklanken zijn wel helder. Op het laatst is het nummer weer rustig, maar ook nu is het einde iets te vroeg afgekapt.

Als je met koptelefoon luistert is het soms even zoeken naar een passend volume. Maar deze volume verschillen maken het luisteren wel extra boeiend. In vergelijking met de voorgaande albums, vallen bepaalde stukjes een beetje tegen. Maar gelukkig is er ook veel om van te genieten. Bijvoorbeeld van de variatie in het aantal laagjes in de muziek, en de manier waarom ze verdeeld zijn over de koptelefoon.
