Dutch prog metal band Armed Cloud will launch ‘Nimbus’, their fourth album, on 25 May. Nimbus comes from cumulonimbus, aka thunderclouds. This is the band’s darkest and heaviest album to date.

The sound at the start of ‘Safety Word’ is a bit duller than expected. The metal could have “thundered” a bit more. Still, the way this opening track is constructed is to be enjoyed. Among other things, the small played part and sung part, the “industrial” sounds and the uptempo continuation. Now the heavily played parts seem to stand out better. Daan Dekker’s scream is cool. His voice continues to evolve, and so does the music. ‘Angel of Frost’ has a lovely intro. The (bass) guitar forms a great combination with the keyboards. Rico Noijen shows beautiful breaks and fills, he drums in service of the whole. The voices of Daan and guest singer Marcela Bovio (Stream of Passion, Ayreon) form a special combination. Their way of singing suits the lyrics. This one is about loneliness and struggle in our demanding society. During an instrumental piece, you feel the turbulence. The ending extinguishes beautifully.

The start of ‘Desolation’ is quiet. Daan sings (in his own distinctive colour of voice) about how they experienced the Covid crisis as a band. The tightly played piece has the speed of a machine gun. There is spoken sampling and sirens. You can hear the frustration in Daan’s (wordless) vocals. Her sudden ending is well chosen. The frustration can also be heard in ‘Demon I, Demon You’. But ‘The Ones Who Are Lost’ is a bit lighter in spirit. You can hear more confidence from the lyrics and the way they are sung. This is also reflected in the melody and the more accessible structure.

The light start of ‘Handless Thief’ is followed by metal, some parts of which are rousing. As a result, the first sentences might pass you by. But more and more phrases and words come in. This is about a person with Alzheimer’s who is in a care home, not understanding why they are locked up. The “chorus” is sung and played a bit lighter. This ensures accessibility, during a live show there will definitely be interaction with the audience. Especially the words “I Cry” come in.
The lyrics cover a variety of topics. In a nutshell, “Stitches” is about the cumbersome system of youth care, its pitfalls and the strength of young people. Quiet parts and metal alternate. There is also a good alternation and interplay between highs and lows.
Music, vocals and the manner of singing form a constant unity. The same goes for ‘Nimbus’. This lighter and accessible title track is about the powerfulness of music as a healer. The calm sounds of an acoustic guitar give ‘White Wine’ a melancholic atmosphere. This is enhanced by the quiet (collaborative) vocals. This is a surprising but well-performed track. The sound of the cymbals is a bit too tinny in ‘Social Sludge’. Otherwise, nothing but praise for the sound of the drumming, and the drumming style. In this last track, you can hear the anger. Armed Cloud has had misfortunes as a band, they have been ripped off, cheated, and evil was spoken deliberately. The anger and frustration are expressed in a scream. The music has complex twists/rests. The ending is quite unexpected, but beautiful.

At intervals, a lot comes at you, both instrumentally and vocally. You can hear a number of emotions like restlessness and frustration. Not only vocals and music form a good balance, the instruments among themselves also form a fine harmony. The release show is scheduled for 25 May at Popei (Eindhoven, The Netherlands).

Armed Cloud- Nimbus

De Nederlandse prog metalband Armed Cloud lanceert 25 mei ‘Nimbus’, hun vierde album. Nimbus komt van cumulonimbus, alias onweerswolken. Dit is het donkerste en zwaarste album van de band tot nu toe.

Het geluid bij aanvang van ‘Safety Word’ is iets doffer dan verwacht. De metal had iets meer mogen “donderen”. Toch is het genieten van de manier waarop deze openingstrack is opgebouwd. Onder andere van het klein gespeeld deel en gezongen deel, de “industriële” geluiden en het uptempo vervolg. Nu lijken de zwaar gespeelde delen beter naar voren te komen. De schreeuw van Daan Dekker is gaaf. Zijn stem blijft zich ontwikkelen, en dat geldt ook voor de muziek. ‘Angel of Frost’ heeft een mooi intro. De (bas)gitaar vormt een prima combinatie met de toetsen. Rico Noijen laat mooie breaks en fills horen, hij drumt in dienst van het geheel. De stemmen van Daan en gastzangeres Marcela Bovio (Stream of Passion, Ayreon) vormen een bijzondere combinatie. Hun manier van zingen past bij de tekst. Deze gaat over de eenzaamheid en de worsteling in onze veeleisende maatschappij. Tijdens een instrumentaal stuk voel je de onrust. Het einde dooft mooi uit.

De start van ‘Desolation’ is rustig. Daan zingt (met zijn eigen kenmerkende kleur stem) over hoe zij als band de Covid crisis hebben beleefd. Het strak gespeelde stuk heeft de snelheid van een machinegeweer. Er is gesproken sampling en sirenes. Je hoort de frustratie in de (woordeloze) zang van Daan. Her plotselinge einde is goed gekozen. De frustratie is ook te horen in ‘Demon I, Demon You’. Maar ‘The Ones Who Are Lost’ is wat lichter van opzet. Uit de tekst en de manier van zingen hoor je meer vertrouwen. Dat komt ook tot uitdrukking in de melodie en de toegankelijkere structuur.

Na de lichte start van ‘Handless Thief’ volgt de metal, waarvan sommige delen opzwepend zijn. Hierdoor gaan de eerste zinnen misschien langs je heen. Maar steeds meer zinnen en woorden komen binnen. Dit gaat over een persoon met Alzheimer die in een verzorgingshuis zit, en niet begrijpt waarom hij/zij opgesloten zit. Het “refrein” is wat lichter gezongen en gespeeld. Dit zorgt voor toegankelijkheid, tijdens een live show zal er zeker interactie zijn met het publiek. Vooral de woorden “I Cry” komen binnen.
In de songteksten komen allerlei onderwerpen aan bod. ‘Stitches’ gaat kort gezegd over de het logge systeem van de jeugdzorg, de valkuilen en de kracht van de jongeren. Rustige delen en metal wisselen elkaar af. Daarnaast is er ook een goede afwisseling en samenspel tussen hoge en lage tonen.
Muziek, zang en de manier van zingen vormen een constante eenheid. Dat geldt ook voor ‘Nimbus’. Deze lichtere en toegankelijke titeltrack gaat over de kracht van muziek als healer. De kalme klanken van een akoestische gitaar geven ‘White Wine’ een melancholische sfeer. Dit wordt versterkt door de rustige (samen)zang. Dit is een verrassende, maar geslaagde track. Het geluid van de cimbalen is in ‘Social Sludge’ iets te blikkerig. Verder niks dan lof over de klank van het drumwerk, en de manier van drummen. In deze laatste track hoor je de woede. Armed Cloud heeft als band tegenslagen gehad, ze zijn opgelicht, bedrogen en er werd bewust kwaad gesproken. De woede en frustratie komen tot uiting in een schreeuw. De muziek heeft complexe wendingen/rusten. Het einde is vrij onverwacht, maar mooi.

Met vlagen komt er veel op je af, zowel instrumentaal als vocaal. Je hoort een aantal emoties zoals onrust en frustratie. Niet alleen zang en muziek vormen een goede balans, ook de instrumenten onderling vormen een prima harmonie. De release show staat gepland voor 25 mei in Popei (Eindhoven).
