Eleonore is a classically trained pianist from Germany. From 1978 to 1982, she played as a stand-in in a local prog/hard rock band. That was very different from the music she was used to. Moreover, she had stage fright, preferring to hide behind her keyboards. After she left the band, she completed her university studies. Until her retirement, she lovingly worked as a special education teacher. She thought she would never go back into music, but things turned out differently. To make a long story short, she completed an education in music production and founded her international online project Aliénor in 2021, in which she likes to experiment with different musical styles. The debut alum ‘The Raven’ was released in 2023. This is a prog rock/hard rock album. Meanwhile, ‘Dedications’ (EP) is out. She wrote everything herself, except the lyrics of ‘Little Leaves’ and ‘Freedom’.

‘Little Leaves’ is a poem by English poet Lord A. Tennyson (1809 -1892). The classical start includes piano playing and violin. The low notes form a nice contrast with the violin. Grey D has a clear pronunciation, her calm vocals matching the music and the atmosphere of the ancient poem. The layers of the different instruments are well spread across the headset. With good sound quality, the details come out well. ‘Short Love Song’ has a beautiful blend of various instruments, including strings. Unnoticed, there are more layers in the calm music than you initially realise.

The music of ‘Freedom’ is also written to an old poem, this time by George Cooper (1840 – 1927). The rhythm is steady but calm. Twists and details are added in a subtle way. The vocals are occasionally stacked, at other times used as an instrument. The ending is cut too early, a pity.
The start of ‘Through The Years’ is calm but intriguing. Rhythm and melody form a pleasant flow, but too little happens to make a deep impression. But the details of the ‘barchimes’, for instance, triggers you to listen extra carefully.
The sound of water suits ‘Down By The River’; despite the calmness, there are details woven into the music. Grey D. sings clearly and relaxed. The combination of the instruments among themselves, and with the electronic beat is special, the folk elements enhancing this. The build-up verse chorus is quite predictable, snatching attention away from the good details.

Despite the unusual details and mélange in the music, it touches me less than hoped for. There could have been a bit more variety and unexpected elements in vocals and music, this was also possible while maintaining the calm atmosphere.
This album is very different from ‘The Raven’. ‘Dedications’ is much calmer in concept’. This shows Aliénor’s versatility. This is a pleasant album if you want to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the day.

Aliénor – Dedications

Eleonore is een klassiek geschoolde pianiste uit Duitsland. Van 1978 tot 1982 speelde ze als vervangster in een lokale prog/hard rock band. Dat was heel iets anders dan de muziek die ze gewend was. Bovendien had ze plankenkoorts, ze verschool zich het liefst achter haar keyboards. Nadat ze de band verliet, maakte ze haar universitaire opleiding af. Tot aan haar pensioen werkte ze met veel liefde als lerares in het speciaal onderwijs. Ze dacht dat ze nooit meer terug zou gaan in de muziek, maar het liep anders. Om een lang verhaal kort te maken: ze heeft een opleiding in de muziekproductie afgerond en richtte in 2021 haar internationale online project Aliénor op, waarin ze graag experimenteert met verschillende muziekstijlen. In 2023 verscheen het debuut alum ‘The Raven’. Dit is een prog rock/hard rock album. Inmiddels is ‘Dedications’ (EP) uit. Ze heeft alles zelf geschreven, behalve de teksten van ‘Little Leaves’ en ‘Freedom’.

‘Little Leaves’ is een gedicht van de Engelse dichter baron A. Tennyson (1809 –1892). De klassieke start bevat onder andere pianospel en viool. De lage tonen vormen een mooi contrast met de viool. Grey D heeft een duidelijke uitspraak, haar kalme zang past bij de muziek en bij de sfeer van het oude gedicht. De laagjes van de verschillende instrumenten zijn prima verdeeld over de headset. Door de goede geluidskwaliteit komen de details goed tot hun recht. ‘Short Love Song’ heeft een mooie melange van diverse instrumenten, waaronder strijkers. Ongemerkt zijn er meer laagjes in de kalme muziek dan je in eerste instantie in de gaten hebt.

Ook de muziek van ‘Freedom’ is geschreven op een oud gedicht, ditmaal van George Cooper (1840 – 1927). Het ritme is steady maar rustig. De wendingen en details zijn op een subtiele manier toegevoegd. De zang is af en toe gestapeld, op andere momenten ingezet als instrument. Het einde is te vroeg afgekapt, jammer.
De start van ‘Through The Years’ is kalm, maar intrigerend. Ritme en melodie vormen een aangename flow, maar er gebeurt te weinig om diepe indruk te maken. Maar door de details van bijvoorbeeld de “barchimes” word je wel getriggerd om extra goed te luisteren.
Het geluid van water past bij ‘Down By The River’, ondanks de kalmte zijn er toch details in de muziek verweven. Grey D. zingt duidelijk en relaxed. De combinatie van de instrumenten onderling, en met de elektronische beat is bijzonder, de folk elementen versterken dit. De opbouw couplet refrein is vrij voorspelbaar, en snoept de aandacht van de goede details weg.

Ondanks de bijzondere details en melanges in de muziek, raakt het me minder dan gehoopt. Er had wat meer variatie en onverwachte elementen in zang en muziek mogen zitten, dit was ook mogelijk met behoud van de kalme sfeer.
Dit album is heel anders dan ‘The Raven’. ‘Dedications’ is veel kalmer van opzet’. Dat toont de veelzijdigheid van Aliénor aan. Dit is een aangenaam album als je even wilt afschakelen van de drukte van de dag.
