Jurgen Burdorf was ten years old when he first heard Mark Knopfler play. He was so impressed that he started to play the guitar as well. He studied jazz guitar at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. But Jugren also composes and plays outside this genre. On 2 October Rhombus, his fourth album, was released.

‘Fuzz Five O‘ has a wonderful blues related start. There is a fine balance between rhythm and melody. The sound of the drums a bit ‘chilly’. The rhythm section plays a tight base, with not many unexpected elements. The guitar playing is very varied, but could have come a bit more to the fore. There is also lovely organ playing to be heard.
The rhythm of ‘Minor Issues‘ is a bit more exhilarating than its predecessor. Not only the rhythm, but also the style is different. The twists and turns flow into each other, and with that the tempo also changes a number of times. The volume remains more or less the same. Every now and then the sound flows nicely in the headphones. Furthermore, this song, and the songs that follow are somewhat predictable. Because of the repetitions in the rhythm and the volume of the other instruments, the compelling guitar playing is pushed a bit too much into the background. The sound of the whole could have been a bit more clear. The special sounds and styles that Jurgen creates do not always blossom fully. It’s a pity because he does play well, I am regularly touched. The music has more or less a couplet-refrain structure. This makes it accessible to a wide audience. The details in the funky/groovy ‘Fast And Loose’, for example, almost disappear into the whole. The songs have a delightful flow which makes them easy and comfortable to ‘listen out’.

‘First Day Of Autumn‘ is a bit more laid back. The sensitive guitar playing is ‘over ruled’ by the percussion. It’s a very solid base, but it’s too loud
as compared to the keys and especially the guitar. Only at the very last moment the mutual balance is better, too late to touch me. It’s a shame, because the emotion that is definitely there in the music is not well expressed now.
In ‘Steve’s Swagger‘ several nice details have been added, including the sound of horns. The volume balance between the instruments is better here. The tempo in ‘El Plato‘ is slightly higher with gusts. This song contains a nice piece of drumming. Everything is well played but a real master song is missing. Although in ‘Of Hubris And Humility‘ I am surprised by the build-up. There are unexpected twists and turns in it, like a mysterious piece. Just before the end I am really touched by a fantastic minimalist piece.
I would have liked to feel this earlier and especially more often.

If I can create an atmosphere, a number of songs are more or less suitable as lounge music. The inspiration could have come from many decades ago, with sultry calm music in smoky places that you can still see on black and white posters. Still, this is not an old-fashioned album, certainly not! The details and changes in the music are regularly at predictable moments. Jurgen may have played a little too much on safe. A little more variation to push an instrument a bit more to the foreground, and others a bit more to the background, would have made this album more vivid. Actually, he sells himself a bit short, because it’s obvious he’s a good guitarist. ‘Rhombus‘ is an accessible, instrumental album that fits perfectly to listen to in a quiet hour.

Jurgen Burdorf – Rhombus

Jurgen Burdorf was tien jaar toen hij Mark Knopfler voor het eerst hoorde spelen. Hij was zo onder de indruk dat hij ook gitaar ging spelen. Op het Conservatorium van Amsterdam studeerde hij jazz gitaar. Maar Jugren componeert en speelt ook buiten dit genre. Op 2 oktober verscheen Rhombus, zijn vierde album.
‘Fuzz Five O’ heeft een heerlijke blues gerelateerde start. Er is een prima evenwicht tussen ritme en melodie. Het geluid van het drumstel een beetje kil. De ritmesectie speelt een strakke basis, met weinig onverwachte elementen. Het gitaarspel is prima gevarieerd, maar had wat meer naar de voorgrond mogen komen. Er is ook heerlijk orgelspel te horen.

Het ritme van ‘Minor Issues’ is wat opzwepender dan zijn voorganger. Niet alleen het ritme, maar ook de stijl is anders. De wendingen vloeien in elkaar over, en daarmee verandert het tempo ook een aantal keer. Het volume blijft ongeveer gelijk. Zo nu en dan loopt het geluid leuk heen en weer in de koptelefoon. Verder verloopt dit, en de nummers die volgen redelijk voorspelbaar. Door de herhalingen in het ritme, en door het volume van de overige instrumenten, wordt het meeslepende gitaarspel een beetje te veel naar de achtergrond gedrukt. Het geluid van het geheel had wat meer helder kunnen zijn. De bijzondere geluiden en stijlen die Jurgen onder zijn snaren vandaan haalt komen niet altijd volledig tot bloei. Jammer want hij speelt wel degelijk goed, regelmatig word ik even geraakt. De muziek heeft min of meer een couplet-refrein opbouw. Daarmee is het wel toegankelijk voor een breed publiek. De details die bijvoorbeeld in het funky/groovy ‘Fast And Loose’ vallen bijna weg in het geheel. De nummers hebben een heerlijke flow waardoor ze makkelijk en comfortabel ‘weg-luisteren’.

‘First Day Of Autumn’ is wat meer laid back. Het gevoelige gitaarspel wordt ‘over ruled’ door de percussie. Het is een prima solide basis, maar het is te luid ten opzichte van de toetsen en vooral van gitaar. Pas op het allerlaatst is de onderlinge balans beter, te laat om mij te raken. Zonde, want de emotie die in de muziek zit, komt nu niet goed tot uiting. In ‘Steve’s Swagger’ zijn diverse leuke details toegevoegd, waaronder het geluid van blazers. De volumebalans tussen de instrumenten is hier beter. Het tempo in ‘El Plato’ ligt met vlagen iets hoger. Dit nummer bevat een lekker stukje drumwerk. Alles is goed gespeeld, maar een echt topnummer ontbreekt. Al word ik in ‘Of Hubris And Humility’ wel verrast door de opbouw. Hier zitten verrassende wendingen in, zoals een mysterieus stukje. Vlak voor het einde word ik echt geraakt door een fantastisch minimalistisch stukje. Wat had ik dit graag eerder en vooral vaker willen voelen.

Als ik een sfeerbeeld mag scheppen, dan zijn een aantal nummers min of meer geschikt als lounge muziek. De inspiratie zou voor een deel van vele decennia geleden kunnen komen, met zwoele, kalme muziek in rokerige zalen die je nog wel op zwart wit posters ziet. Toch is dit geen oubollig album, zeker niet! De details en de veranderingen die in de muziek zitten zijn regelmatig op voorspelbare momenten. Jurgen heeft misschien iets te veel op safe gespeeld. Iets meer variatie om een instrument wat meer naar de voorgrond te duwen, en anderen dus wat meer naar de achtergrond, had dit album levendiger gemaakt. Eigenlijk doet hij zichzelf een beetje te kort, want het is wel duidelijk dat hij een goede gitarist is. ‘Rhombus’ is toegankelijk, instrumentaal album dat prima past om op een rustig moment naar te luisteren.
