The EP ‘Focus’ is Soft Ffog’s second release. This Norwegian quartet combines jazz with prog rock to create nostalgic, instrumental songs.
Opening track ‘Camel’ is complex, you have a lot to listen to. Elements from the beginning, reappear at the end. ‘Focus’ contains subdued parts and beautiful, high-pitched (keyboard) tones, among other things. This third (and second-to-last) track is a fine blend of jazz and prog.
Due to the complex build-up, it takes a while before you get to know this EP a bit. The balance or alternation between the instruments is good. This remains, even when the music seems to go against each other. There are numerous twists in tempo and volume. The retro feel of the music is lovely, the sound is good. Although in the gently played parts there seems to be a small dull layer over the music, but this doesn’t bother , not at all.
The titles of the (very different) tracks reveal their sources of inspiration. Those influences can be heard. Yet Soft Ffog has its own sound, and it pleases very much.

De EP ‘Focus’ is de tweede release van Soft Ffog. Dit Noorse kwartet combineert jazz met prog rock en creëert hiermee nostalgische, instrumentale nummers.
De openingstrack ‘Camel’ zit complex in elkaar, je hebt heel wat om naar te luisteren. Elementen van begin, keren op het einde terug. ‘Focus’ bevat onder andere ingetogen delen en mooie, hoge (keyboard) tonen. Deze derde (en een na laatste) track is een prima mix van jazz en prog.
Door de complexe opbouw duurt het een tijd voordat je het deze EP een beetje kent. De balans dan wel afwisseling tussen de instrumenten is prima. Dit blijft, ook als de muziek tegen elkaar in lijkt te gaan. Er zijn talloze wendingen in tempo en volume. De retro sfeer van de muziek is heerlijk, het geluid is goed. Al lijkt er in de zacht gespeelde delen een klein dof laagje over de muziek te liggen, maar dit stoort totaal niet.
De titels van de (zeer verschillende) tracks verraden hun inspiratiebronnen. Die invloeden zijn te horen. Toch heeft Soft Ffog een eigen sound, en die bevalt heel goed.
