The British progressive rock project Riffstone consists of multi-instrumentalists and singers Dave Allen and Colin Powell. The atmosphere of their melodic, symphonic soundscapes matches the lyrics, which deal with topics like mythology and human emotions. Their inspiration comes from bands such as Big Big Train, Alan Parsons Project and, especially vocally, Yes. This can be heard in the remarkable, sometimes high -pitched vocals, which are regularly layered. During vocal parts, the music is usually more mellow, which matches the colour of the (sometimes monotonous) vocals and the unusual singing style. The wordless, (feminine-sounding) vocals are a fine addition. The rocking, faster parts are mainly instrumental.
The sound of the “percussion” varies: it’s too mechanical in the rhythmic parts. However, during several breaks and the intro to ‘Tylwyth Teg’, the sound is good.
There is a lot of variation in keyboards and guitars, and the bass is also pleasantly present.
The balance between these is very fine. A number of transitions are gradual, while other instrumental changes in tempo, volume and atmosphere are quite significant. Riffstone’s unique sound comes to the fore on “Sanctuary Sky”.

Het Britse progressief rock project Riffstone bestaat uit de multi-instrumentalisten en zangers Dave Allen en Colin Powell. De sfeer van hun melodieuze, symfonische soundscapes passen bij de teksten, deze gaan bijvoorbeeld over mythologie en menselijke emoties. Hun inspiratie komt van bands als Big Big Train, Alan Parsons Project en, zeker vocaal gezien, Yes. Dat is terug te horen in de markante, soms hoge zang, die regelmatig gestapeld is. Tijdens vocale delen is de muziek meestal zachter, dit sluit aan bij de kleur van de (soms monotone) zang en bij de bijzonder manier van zingen. De woordeloze, (vrouwelijk klinkende) zang is prima toegevoegd. De rockende, snellere delen zijn voornamelijk instrumentaal.
De klank van de “percussie” varieert: vooral in de ritmische delen is het te klinisch. Tijdens diverse breaks en het intro van ‘Tylwyth Teg’ is de klank goed.
Er is veel variatie in keyboards en gitaren, ook de bas is aangenaam aanwezig.
De balans hier tussen is prima. Een aantal wendingen verlopen geleidelijk, andere instrumentale veranderingen in tempo, volume en sfeer zijn behoorlijk groot. Het eigen geluid van Riffstone komt op ‘Sanctuary Sky’ duidelijk naar voren.
