Mark Bogert first gained fame as a guitarist with Knight Area (2012-2023), which Magoria joined in 2019. He also regularly performs as a session musician. Last year, he replaced John Mitchell, the guitarist of the British progressive rock band Arena. Last year, he was named ‘Guitarist of the Year in the Benelux’ by Gitarist magazine. Despite his busy schedule, Mark still found time to record a new album. On this album, he doesn’t play guitars only, but also bass and piano. ‘Antiquity Neon’ will be released on 24 October via Construction Records.

Right from the start of “Thermal Properties”, the distribution of the music over the headphones is beautiful. The sound is a fraction duller than expected. Although the music has a touch of pop, you can immediately hear that this is an album by a rock guitarist. There are some enjoyable twists and surprises. But of course, there is a lot of guitar playing. At times, the guitar playing is pleasantly screechy. After a short, “milder” section, this opening track ends a little too abruptly.

‘Mercury Glow’ has a warm atmosphere. Most of the twists and turns are gradual, and the music is quite complex in structure, almost unnoticed. The drums have a warm sound, and the differences in pitch between the drums can be heard. After a rocking section, there is a surprising transition to a calm piece. A few twists and turns later, the music slowly fades out.
The first part of “Chemically Inactive” is catchy, with lovely details in the percussion. After that, the tempo is quite high. This is interspersed with compelling and/or catchy elements. Different parts of the melody and/or rhythm return from time to time.
Each track contains plenty of twists and turns, and there is also a lot of variation. This is especially true of the wonderful guitar playing. This variation is not only between the different tracks, but also within a track. For example, “Future Invention” has a compelling start, but there are also uptempo/hectic parts. Despite the differences, the harmony is preserved.
There are not only changes in tempo and volume, but also between high and low tones. This can be heard in “Whisky a Go Go”, among others, in which the drumming again plays an important role.

In the calm “Light Of Love”, you can hear the fingers sliding over the strings. The gentle melody touches me. This is reinforced by Edward Reekers’ voice. The wordless (layered) vocals flow together with the music. This is particularly heartfelt so soon after his (far too early) passing. This tender song contrasts quite strongly with “Artistic Shapes”, but the change in atmosphere feels very natural. Almost imperceptibly, the tempo is quite fast at times.
Piano and guitar form a special, touching blend in “The Extinguishing Of Light”. After the end of this last (actually too short) track, I let the silence sink in for a moment.

The difference in volume between the subdued and rocking parts could have been a bit greater, which would have increased the intensity of the music. Although the guitars are in the foreground, they are not too dominant. The balance between rhythm and melody is very good. ‘Antiquity Neon’ is a very varied album that is easy to listen to, yet complex in structure.

Mark Bogert – Antiquity Neon

Mark Bogert kreeg eerst bekendheid als gitarist bij Knight Area (2012-2023), daar kwam Magoria vanaf 2019 bij. Daarnaast treedt hij regelmatig op als sessiemuzikant. Vorig jaar verving hij John Mitchell, de gitarist van de Britse progressieve rockband Arena. Vorig jaar werd hij door het tijdschrift Gitarist uitgeroepen tot “Gitarist van het jaar van de Benelux”. Ondanks zijn drukke bestaan, vond Mark toch de tijd om een nieuw album op te nemen. Hier speelt hij niet alleen gitaar, maar ook bas en piano. ‘Antiquity Neon’ komt 24 oktober uit via Construction Records.

Al aan de start van ‘Thermal Properties’ is de verdeling van de muziek over de koptelefoon mooi. Het geluid is een fractie doffer dan verwacht. Hoewel de muziek een vleugje poppy is, hoor je wel meteen dat dit een album is van een rock gitarist.
Er zijn leuke wendingen en verrassingen. Maar natuurlijk is er vooral veel gitaarspel. Met vlagen is het gitaarspel aangenaam gillend. Na een kort, “milder” stukje eindigt deze openingstrack net iets te abrupt.

‘Mercury Glow’ heeft een warme sfeer. De meeste wendingen verlopen geleidelijk, bijna ongemerkt is de muziek best complex opgebouwd. De drums hebben een warm geluid bovendien zijn de toonhoogte verschillen van de onderlinge drums te horen. Na rockend deel is er een verrassende wending naar een kalm stukje. Een aantal wendingen later dooft de muziek langzaam uit.
Het eerste stuk van ‘Chemically Inactive’ is pakkend, het bevat leuke details van de percussie. Daarna ligt het tempo behoorlijk hoog. Dit wordt afgewisseld met meeslepende en/of pakkende elementen. Verschillende onderdelen van melodie en/of ritme keren af en toe terug.
Iedere track bevat ruim voldoende wendingen, bovendien is er veel variatie. Dat geldt vooral voor het gave gitaarspel. Die variatie is er niet alleen tussen de verschillende tracks, maar ook binnen een track. Zo heeft ‘Future Invention’ een meeslepende start, maar er zitten ook uptempo/ hectische stukjes inwerkt. Ondanks de verschillen, blijft de harmonie bewaard.
Er zijn niet alleen veranderingen in tempo- en volume, maar ook tussen hoge en lage tonen. Dit is onder andere te horen in ‘Whisky a Go Go’, waarin het drumwerk weer een belangrijk aandeel heeft.

In het kalme ‘Light Of Love’ hoor je de vingers over de snaren glijden. De zachtaardige melodie raakt me. Dit wordt versterkt door de stem van Edward Reekers. De woordeloze (gestapelde) zang vloeit samen met de muziek. Dit komt zo kort na zijn (veel te vroege) overlijden extra binnen. Dit tedere nummer vormt een vrij groot contrast met ‘Artistic Shapes’, maar de verandering van sfeer voelt heel natuurlijk aan. Bijna ongemerkt ligt het tempo op gegeven moment best hoog.
Piano en gitaar vormen in ‘The Extinguishing Of Light‘ een bijzondere, ontroerende melange. Na het einde van deze laatste (eigenlijk te korte) track laat ik de stilte nog even op mij inwerken.

Het verschil in volume tussen ingetogen en rockende delen had wat groter mogen zijn, dit had de intensiteit van de muziek nog wat vergroot. Hoewel de gitaren op de voorgrond zijn, is het niet te overheersend. De balans tussen ritme en melodie erg goed. ‘Antiquity Neon’ is een zeer gevarieerd album dat heel makkelijk weg luistert, maar toch complex in elkaar zit.
