Forgotten Reveries is the fourth album by French progressive power metal band Darktribe. Their philosophical lyrics are not only about fear or loneliness, but also cover themes such as family, childhood and the journey of life.
The album begins very calmly. The build-up to the metal is slow, and the promising music takes on an almost cinematic allure. But ‘Paradox’ ends (on the promo I received) too abruptly. A few other tracks end with a fade-out. But ‘Reality’, for example, fades out beautifully and slowly.
At times, the tempo is quite high, sometimes at the expense of the dynamics. The blend of classically oriented parts, choral singing and metal is good in itself, but the contrasts in volume are too small. Moreover, the sound lacks some warmth. Some songs have surprises, but there are also predictable elements. The choral singing is well added, the guitar playing contains delicious riffs. Forgotten Reveries is an accessible album.

Darktribe – Forgotten Reveries

‘Forgotten Reveries’ is het vierde album van de Franse progressieve power metal band Darktribe. Hun filosofische teksten gaan niet alleen over angst of eenzaamheid. Maar ook thema’s als familie, kindertijd en de reis van het leven komen aan bod.
Het album begint heel kalm. De opbouw naar de metal is langzaam, de veelbelovende muziek krijgt bijna filmische allure. Maar ‘Paradox’ eindigt (op de promo die ik kreeg) te abrupt. Enkele andere tracks eindige met een fade out. Maar bijvoorbeeld ‘Reality’ dooft mooi langzaam uit.
Met vlagen ligt het tempo flink hoog, soms gaat het ten koste van de dynamiek. De melange tussen klassiek georiënteerde delen, koorzang en metal is op zich goed, maar de contrasten in volume zijn te klein. Bovendien mist het geluid wat warmte. Sommige nummers hebben verrassingen, maar er zijn ook voorspelbare elementen. De koorzang is goed toegevoegd, het gitaarspel bevat heerlijke riffs. ‘Forgotten Reveries’ is een toegankelijk album.
