Songs No One Will Hear is Arjen Anthony Lucassen’s new album. The concept: a catastrophic asteroid is racing towards Earth, which will be destroyed in five months. Everyone reacts in their own way: some panic, others party, or break down. Only a few remain calm in this chaotic situation. Mike Mills (Toehider) narrates the story.

His voice is the first you hear in “End Of The World Show”. He explains that the Earth will be destroyed in five months. This continues into “The Clock Ticks Down”. The pleasant melody is balanced with the vocals. In the beginning, there is no singing in harmony, so you can understand the words of the different vocalists word for word. The twists and turns are gradual at first.
Despite the calmness, there are occasionally many layers in the vocals and music. There is an unexpected transition to an instrumental piece with a “space atmosphere”. This turns into an instrumental rock/metal part with cool guitar playing. In a quieter part, the vocals occasionally sound a bit distorted. Quiet parts are interspersed with (instrumental) rock/metal pieces, some with wonderfully heavy organ playing. This track finishes not only with Mike Mills, but also with sampled sounds.
At the start of “Goddamn Conspiracy”, you hear drummer Koen Herfst “counting down”, which is an unusual choice for a studio album. I haven’t mentioned it yet, but his drumming is very good. The blend between the different instruments and the (layered) vocals is very beautiful. The same goes for the violin playing that “flutters” between the whole.

‘The Universe Has Other Plans’ has a sober intro with string instruments, among other things. In this track, too, you hear the ultimate balance between light and heavy music/high and low tones.
Although there is not much time left, “Shaggathon” has an optimistic sound. Here, they celebrate the time that humans still have. The blend/alternation between guitar and violin is beautiful. The barking dog is a cute addition. In the duet “We’ll Never Know”, a couple (Floor Jansen and Arjen) wonder what their unborn daughter would be like… they will never get to know this girl, because the world will end. As the song progresses, you hear more despair, especially in Floor’s voice. The vocal outbursts are sublime. The guitar playing almost cuts through your soul. Mike actually speaks again just a little too early.
The vibe is more positive again in ‘Dr Slumber’s Blue Bus’.

‘Just Not Today’ has a calm start. There seems to be resignation in the music and vocals, and the lyrics have a hopeful atmosphere. You can sing along to the positive and kind words quite quickly. You hear the narrator, but also sampling of noise at the end. The album ends with “Our Final Song”. Robert Soeterboek and Marcela Bovio give this epic extra grandeur. Peter Daltrey provides the spoken words. At first, the vocals and music are quite calm, and despite the (subtle) low tones, the atmosphere is not sombre. There are countless (gradual) twists and beautiful details in the music. As the track progresses, you notice that something is about to happen. Theatrical vocals and heavier music alternate with subdued parts. The end of humanity is near. You hear the impact… the spoken words stop. It seems like the end, but the CD continues for a moment. How? I won’t reveal that.

On CD2 (of the Limited Edition), the first track is skipped, which is a good choice. Mike is a born storyteller, but sometimes it’s also lovely to be able to listen to an album with “just” music. The end of “We’ll Never Know” could have faded out a little more slowly, which would have given the song even more impact. In “Just Not Today”, for example, you do not hear either the narrator or the sampled sounds.
‘Our Final Song’ contains spoken words and sampling (just before the end). Fortunately, because without this addition, this last track would not be complete.

The end of the world could be a strange theme for some, while others might be immediately enthusiastic. Still others might be sceptical about whether it would be over the top in terms of sampling and drama, but none of this is the case. Arjen shows in a special way how diverse humanity is in dealing with this. “Songs No One Will Hear” is fantastically put together, both vocally and instrumentally.

‘Songs No One Will Hear’ is het nieuwe album van Arjen Anthony Lucassen. Het concept: een catastrofale asteroïde stevent op de aarde af, hierdoor zal de aarde over vijf maanden vergaan. Ieder mens reageert op zijn/haar eigen manier: de één raakt in paniek, een ander gaat feesten, of stort in. Slechts een enkeling blijft rustig in deze chaotische situatie. Mike Mills (Toehider) verduidelijkt als verteller het verhaal.

Zijn stem hoor je als eerste in ‘End Of The World Show’. Hij legt uit dat de aarde over vijf maanden zal vergaan. Dit loopt door naar ‘The Clock Ticks Down’. De aangename melodie is in balans met de zang. In het begin is er geen samenzang waardoor je de woorden van de verschillende vocalisten woord voor woord kunt verstaan. De wendingen verlopen in eerste instantie geleidelijk.
Ondanks de kalmte zijn er af en toe veel laagjes in zang en muziek. Er is een onverwachte wending naar een instrumentaal stuk met “space sfeer”. Dit gaat over naar instrumentaal rock/metal deel met gaaf gitaarspel. In een rustiger deel klinkt de zang klinkt af en toe wat vervormd. Rustige delen worden afgewisseld met (instrumentale) rock/metal stukken, al dan niet met heerlijk zwaar orgelspel. Deze track eindigt niet alleen met Mike Miles, maar ook met gesampelde geluiden.
Bij aanvang van ‘Goddamn Conspiracy’ hoor je drummer Koen Herfst “aftellen”, een bijzonder keuze voor een studioalbum. Ik had het nog niet vermeld, maar zijn drumwerk is zeer goed. De melange tussen de verschillende instrumenten en de (gestapelde) zang is erg mooi. Dat geldt ook voor het vioolspel dat tussen het geheel “dwarrelt”.

‘The Universe Has Other Plans’ heeft een sober intro met onder ander strijkinstrumenten. Ook in deze track hoor je de ultieme balans tussen lichte en zware muziek/hoge en lage tonen.
Hoewel er niet veel tijd meer is, is ‘Shaggathon’ optimistisch van klank. Hier viert men de tijd die de mens nog heeft. De melange/afwisseling tussen gitaar en viool is mooi. Het blaffende hondje is leuk toegevoegd. In het duet ‘We’ll Never Know’ vraagt een stel (Floor Jansen en Arjen) zich af hoe hun ongeboren dochter zou zijn… ze zullen dit meisje nooit leren kennen, want de wereld zal vergaan. Naarmate het nummer vordert, hoor je meer wanhoop, vooral in de stem van Floor. De vocale uithalen zijn subliem. Het gitaarspel snijdt bijna door je ziel. Mike is eigenlijk net iets te vroeg weer aan het woord.
De vibe is weer positiver in ‘Dr Slumber’s Blue Bus’.

‘Just Not Today’ heeft een kalme start. Er lijkt berusting te klinken in muziek en zang, de tekst heeft een hoopgevende sfeer. De positieve en lieve woorden kun je al vrij snel meezingen. Je hoort niet alleen de verteller, maar ook sampling van rumoer op het einde. Het album eindigt met ‘Our Final Song’. Robert Soeterboek en Marcela Bovio geven deze epic extra grandeur. Peter Daltrey zorgt voor de gesproken woorden. Eerst zijn zang en muziek nog best kalm, ondanks de (subtiele) lage tonen, is de sfeer niet somber. Er zijn talloze (geleidelijke) wendingen en mooie details in de muziek. Naarmate de track vordert merk je dat er iets gaat gebeuren. Theatrale zang en zwaardere muziek worden afgewisseld met ingetogen delen. Het eind van de mensheid is nabij. Je hoort de inslag.. de gesproken woorden stoppen. Het lijkt het einde, maar de cd gaat nog even verder. Hoe? Dat verklap ik niet.

Op CD2 (van de Limited Edition) wordt de eerste track over geslagen, goede keuze. Mike is een geboren verteller, maar soms is het ook fijn om een album te kunnen luisteren met “alleen maar” muziek. Het einde van ‘We’ll Never Know’ had iets langzamer weg mogen sterven, dat het had nummer nog wat meer impact gegeven. In bijvoorbeeld ‘Just Not Today’ hoor je zowel de verteller, als de gesampelde geluiden niet.
’Our Final Song’ bevat (vlak voor het eind) gesproken woorden en sampling. Gelukkig maar, want zonder deze toevoeging zou deze laatste track niet compleet zijn.

Het vergaan van de wereld kan voor de één een vreemd thema zijn, anderen zijn wellicht meteen enthousiast. Weer een ander is misschien sceptisch of het niet over de top zou zijn qua sampling en dramatiek, maar niks van dit alles. Arjen laat op een bijzondere manier zien hoe divers de mensheid hiermee omgaat. ‘Songs No One Will Hear’ zit vocaal en zeker instrumentaal fantastisch in elkaar.
