‘Looking For You’ is het achtste album van de Finse band Amberian Dawn. Eerlijk gezegd was deze band niet eerder op mijn pad gekomen. Hun muziekstijl maakte mij nieuwsgierig. Ze profileren zichzelf als een melodische Abba metalband, waarbij ze veel gebruik maken van keyboards. Amberian Dawn‘s toetsenist Tuomas Seppälä heeft samengewerkt met Abba bandlid Benny Andersson, en met de Finse toetsenist Kebu. Samen hebben ze gezocht naar de perfecte sound voor deze match van pop en metal.

‘United’ heeft een opzwepende start, de melodie is bijna vrolijk. De zang is vriendelijker van kleur dan we meestal in de metal horen. De positieve tekst past in het geheel, dit kun je inderdaad Abba Metal noemen. Natuurlijk hoor je ook rockend gitaarspel, voor echte metal is het te licht, te braaf. Zang en muziek worden op het einde helaas weggedraaid.

‘Eternal Fire Burning’ heeft een vrij rustige, keyboard gedragen start. Door de eenvoudige structuur en de goed verstaanbare zang, kun je delen van de tekst na een paar keer al meezingen. De opbouw en de verdeling/afwisseling tussen de ‘Abba’ stukken en de rock/metal verloopt tot nog toe vrij voorspelbaar. De geluidskwaliteit van beide stijlen is prima.

‘Looking For You’ is de titeltrack, ook dit is een ‘feel-good’ mix van pop en rock/metal. De opbouw is nogmaals coupletje- refreintje. De vrolijke, opzwepende poppy sound is belangrijker dan de metal. Dat ze zich droevig en eenzaam voelt is aan de happy sound van de muziek niet te merken.

‘Symphony Nr.1 Part 3 – Awakening’ heeft door de symfonische elementen een klassieke inslag. De zang en muziek zijn in balans. Wel hadden de symfonische elementen hadden wat voller mogen klinken. Dit is geen pop met metal, maar symfonie met metal, en is een welkome afwisseling. Later wordt er een vleugje pop aan toegevoegd. Een groot deel van de tekst wordt in hoog tempo gezongen. Na een klein gezongen en gespeeld deel, gaan tempo en volume weer omhoog. De metal in combinatie met symfonie is pakkend neergezet. De structuur is boeiender, de toegankelijkheid is gebleven.

‘Lay All Your Love On Me’ is natuurlijk een Abba cover. Hoewel ze een eigen versie hebben gemaakt, met veel keyboardspel erin, is het origineel herkenbaar. Hier had ik zeker wat meer metal in verwacht.

De ‘Au Revoir’ is een kort instrumentaal keyboard nummer. Je hoort een mix van symfonische en elektronische klanken, er is geen metal te horen.
‘Cherish My Memory’ tot slot is weer pop met zo nu en dan wat metal erin verwerkt.

Diverse nummers zijn aan het einde weggedraaid, hier had een gecomponeerd einde mooier geweest. Mede door de elektrische klanken van het keyboard, heeft de pop een groter aandeel dan de metal. En de metal die er is, gaat richting de hardrock toe. Door de ‘softheid’ zal dit de liefhebbers van de heavy metal niet aanspreken.
Door de eenvoudige opbouw zijn de nummers niet heel boeiend, maar toegankelijk zijn ze wel.

Amberian Dawn – Looking For You

Looking For You‘ is the eighth album of the Finnish band Amberian Dawn. To be honest, this band hadn’t come on my path before. Their musical style made me curious. They profile themselves as a melodic Abba metal band, using keyboards a lot. Amberian Dawn ’s keyboardplayer Tuomas Seppälä has collaborated with Abba band member Benny Andersson, and with Finnish keyboardplayer Kebu. Together they have searched for the perfect sound for this match of pop and metal.

‘United‘ has a rousing start, the melody is almost cheerful. The vocals are more friendly than we usually hear in metal. The positive lyrics fit in the whole, this can indeed be called Abba Metal. ‘Eternal Fire Burning‘ has a rather quiet, keyboard worn start. Because of the simple structure and well understood vocals, you can sing along parts of the lyrics after a few times. The structure and the division/exchange between the ‘Abba’ parts and the rock/metal is quite predictable so far. The sound quality of both styles is fine.

Looking For You‘ is the title track, also this is a ‘feel-good’ mix of pop and rock/metal. The build-up is again a verse refrain. The cheerful, exhilarating poppy sound is more important than the metal. That she feels sad and lonely is not noticeable in the happy sound of the music.

Symphony Nr.1 Part 3 – Awakening‘ has a classical feel because of the symphonic elements. The vocals and music are in balance. However, the symphonic elements could have sounded a bit fuller. This is not pop with metal, but symphony with metal, and is a welcome change. Later on, a touch of pop is added. A large part of the lyrics is sung in high tempo. After a small sung and played part, tempo and volume go up again. The metal in combination with symphony is catchy. The structure is more captivating, the accessibility has remained.

Lay All Your Love On Me‘ is of course an Abba cover. Although they have made their own version, with a lot of keyboard playing in it, the original is recognizable. I would have expected a bit more metal in this one for sure.

The ‘Au Revoir‘ is a short instrumental keyboard track. You hear a mix of symphonic and electronic sounds, there is no metal to be heard.
Finally, ‘Cherish My Memory‘ is pop again with some metal in it every now and then.

Several songs are turned away at the end, here a composed ending would have been nicer. Partly because of the electric sounds of the keyboard, the pop has a larger part than the metal. And the metal that is there, goes towards the hardrock. Because of the ‘softness’ this will not appeal to heavy metal fans.
Because of the simple structure, the songs are not very interesting, but they are accessible.
