The prog band Ring Van Möbius no longer exists, the three-track album Firebrand is their very last (concept) album. The title track is less than ten minutes long, making it the shortest track on the album. False Dawn is a fantastic epic lasting over 25 minutes. It seems to end with a bombastic piece, but this is followed by a section with emotional piano playing and sound effects. After countless (unexpected) twists and turns, it ends unexpectedly.
Singer/keyboardist Thor Erik Helgesen expresses emotion in both the minimalist and powerfully sung parts. At times, his organ playing is retro prog, at other times you hear minimalist piano playing or electronic sounds. Dag Olav Husås plays various percussion instruments: sometimes minimalist, at other times he is more loudly present. Of course, we mustn’t forget bassist Håvard Rasmussen.
The music ranges from minimalist to bombastic and everything in between. Due to the complex compositions, it takes a while before you get to know the songs a little. “Firebrand” is highly recommended for lovers of complex prog rock.

De prog band Ring Van Möbius bestaat niet meer, Firebrand is hun allerlaatste van het drie tracks tellende (concept) album. De titeltrack zit onder de tien minuten en is daarmee de kortste. ‘False Dawn’ is een fantastische epic van ruim 25 minuten.
Deze lijkt te eindigen met een bombastisch stuk, maar er volgt een deel met emotioneel pianospel en geluidseffecten. Na talloze (onverwachte) wendingen is het dan toch nog onverwacht stil.
Zowel in de minimalistische als in de krachtig gezongen delen laat zanger/toetsenist Thor Erik Helgesen emotie horen. Met vlagen is zijn orgelspel retro prog, op andere momenten hoor je minimalistisch pianospel of elektronische klanken. Dag Olav Husås bespeelt diverse percussie instrumenten, soms minimalist op andere momenten is hij luider aanwezig. We mogen bassist Håvard Rasmussen natuurlijk niet vergeten.
De muziek gaat van minimalistisch naar bombastisch en alles wat er tussen in zit. Door de complexe composities duurt het een tijd voordat je de nummers een beetje leert kennen. ‘Firebrand’ is een aanrader voor de liefhebber van complexe prog rock.
