Italian band Trick or treat mixes happy power metal with classical music and funny, ‘’ghosty‘’ elements. The band has been around for over 20 years, but I had never delved into their music until I became curious about ‘Ghosted’ (due out 25 April). The opening track has sampled sounds, classical music and a slightly spooky atmosphere. The ending is abrupt. The metal joins in ‘Craven Road’. The pumping, accessible metal plays the main role in ‘Bloodmoon’. Also due to the female vocals and some grunts, there is also enough variation vocally.
‘Ghosted’, deals with the destructive effects of social media, again the( stacked) vocals positively stand out. The circus theme emerges in the upbeat ‘Dance With The Dancing Clown’. The build-up couplet-rephrase makes the tracks a bit predictable at times. Still, there are surprises, like the choral vocals in ‘Evil Dead Never Sleeps’. ‘Ghosted’ contains a fine mix of happy metal and classical. The background vocals and added sounds fit into it all. The cool guitar playing is beautifully layered, the rhythm section is good. At times, the pace is fast. With 46 minutes, the running time is long enough, yet it was a pleasant three quarters of an hour.

De Italiaanse band Trick or treat mengt happy power metal met klassieke muziek en grappige, “spooky” elementen. De band bestaat ruim 20 jaar, maar ik heb me nog nooit verdiept in hun muziek, totdat ik nieuwsgierig werd naar ‘Ghosted’ (dat 25 april uitkomt). De openingstrack heeft gesampelde geluiden, klassieke muziek en een licht spooky sfeertje. Het einde is abrupt. De metal komt erbij in ‘Craven Road’. In ‘Bloodmoon’ speelt de opzwepende, toegankelijke metal de hoofdrol. Mede door de vrouwelijke zang en enkele grunts is er ook vocaal genoeg variatie.
‘Ghosted’, gaat over de vernietigende werking van social media, weer valt de( gestapelde) zang positief op. Het thema circus komt naar voren in het vrolijke ‘Dance With The Dancing Clown’. Door de opbouw couplet-refrein zijn de tracks soms wat voorspelbaar. Toch zijn er verassingen, zoals de koorzang in ‘Evil Dead Never Sleeps’. ‘Ghosted’ bevat een prima mix van happy metal en klassiek. De achtergrondzang en toegevoegde geluiden passen in het geheel. Het gave gitaarspel is mooi gelaagd, de ritmesectie is goed. Met vlagen ligt het tempo hoog. Met 46 minuten is de speelduur lang genoeg, toch was het een aangename drie kwartier.
