Robbert Duijf won the European Blues Challenge for bands last year. Robbert plays and sings/tells from the heart, and creates pure, acoustic songs. His music is a mix of delta blues, gospel and a touch of British-American folk. ‘Silver Spoon’ is an old school album with one track recordings and few overdubs. Thus, the pure songs come into their own. The album contains 12 songs, including two covers. Robbert’s pleasant voice (which sometimes has a rough edge) forms a fine blend with the backing vocals. However, it is occasionally at predictable moments. You automatically tap along to the mostly calm flow of the music. ‘First train out’ is an ode to his hometown, there is despair in his voice. The songs contain beautiful twists, you feel the emotion in the subdued parts. Vocals and music fit together, the percussion has some lovely details. Robbert’s vocal in ‘The General’ is fantastic, the same goes for the a cappella vocals in ‘Those Days’. ‘Silver Spoon’ is a fine break in the hustle and bustle of the day.

Zijn muziek is een mix van delta blues, gospel en een vleugje Brits-Amerikaanse folk. ‘Silver Spoon’ is een Old school album met one track recordings en weinig overdubs. Zo komen de pure nummers goed tot zijn recht. Het album telt 12 nummers, waaronder twee covers. De prettige stem van Robbert (waar soms een ruw randje op zit) vormt een prima melange met de achtergrondzang. Wel is deze af en toe op voorspelbare momenten. Je tapt vanzelf mee op de overwegend rustige flow van de muziek. ‘First train out’ is een ode aan zijn geboortestad, er klinkt wanhoop in zijn stem. De nummers bevatten mooie wendingen, je voelt de emotie in de ingetogen delen. Zang en muziek sluiten bij elkaar aan, de percussie bevat leuke details. De zang van Robbert in ‘The General’ is fantastisch, dat geldt ook voor de a capella zang in ‘Those Days’. ‘Silver Spoon’ is een prima tussendoortje in de drukte van de dag.
