The French band Edenya plays a mix of (prog) rock, ambient and folk. The first few tracks are mainly calm. However, the tempo in part of ‘The Outing’, for example, is slightly higher, and there are some rocking elements. The differences in volume between the calm and rocking parts are too small. As a result, the music lacks intensity. The sound of the cymbals is a bit tinny. The blend/alternation between rock and folk (and violin) is good.
‘Foreign Ground’ has a fascinating composition and contains a wonderful interaction/interplay between Arabic/Eastern influences, rock/acoustic guitar playing and djembe, among other things. At times, there are too many repetitions in the otherwise very fine title track. A number of songs are (largely) Classical-oriented. The music sometimes lacks warmth, and therefore affects me less than I would like. The high vocals have almost a sharp sound, and in ‘Lady’ the vocals do not sound stable throughout. I do notice that the album is sung and played with emotion, but that does not come across entirely well. It’s a pity, because most of the songs have a good structure.

Edenya – The Secret Destination You Are Looking For
De Franse band Edenya speelt een mix van (prog) rock, ambient en folk. De eerste paar tracks zijn overwegend kalm. Toch ligt het tempo in een deel van bijvoorbeeld ‘The Outing’ iets hoger, en zijn er enkele rockende elementen. De verschillen in volume tussen de kalme en de rockende delen is te klein. Hierdoor mist de muziek intensiteit. Ook het geluid van de cimbalen is wat blikkerig. De melange/afwisseling tussen rock en folk (viool) is goed.
‘Foreign Ground’ heeft een boeiende compositie, en bevat een prima wisselwerking/samenspel tussen onder andere Arabische/oosterse invloeden, rockend/akoestisch gitaarspel en djembe.
Met vlagen zijn er te veel herhalingen in de verder prima titeltrack. Een aantal nummers zijn (groten)deels klassiek georiënteerd. De muziek mist soms wat warmte, en raakt me daardoor minder dan ik zou willen. De hoge zang heeft een vrij scherpe klank, in ‘Lady’ klinkt de zang niet overal stabiel. Ik merk wel dat het album met emotie gezongen en gespeeld is, maar dat komt niet helemaal goed tot zijn recht. Jammer, want de meeste nummers hebben wel een goede opbouw.
