Australian composer/multi-instrumentalist Takiaya Reed is a Cherokee woman. She incorporates her indigenous sovereignty, emancipation and experiences into the (instrumental) music of Divide and Dissolve. ‘Insatiable’ is about Takiaya’s vision of a better world. The drumming is droning, her guitar playing sludgy. Especially with her saxophone playing, and all sorts of sound effects, she creates her own sound in the international metal-doom scene.
The combination of horn and saxophone give ‘Loneliness’ an eerie, almost sad sound.
The contrast with the doom in “Dichotomy” is huge.
Takiaya’s words about loneliness in ‘Grief’ are hardly understandable. But her voice forms a unity with the other instruments. The songs are well spread across the album, which contains both classically oriented parts and (slow) doom-metal. The dingy sound and sludgy guitar certainly doesn’t dominate. The distorted vocals and drumming serve in the service of everything. You don’t have to understand what the songs are about, you just feel the differences in atmosphere. Anyone who normally ignores doom metal should give ‘Insatiable’ a listen.

Het drumwerk is dreunend, haar gitaarspel in sludgy. Vooral met haar saxofoonspel en allerlei geluidseffecten creëert ze een eigen sound binnen de internationale metal-doom wereld. De combinatie van hoorn en saxofoon geven ‘Loneliness’ een sobere, bijna verdrietige klank.
Het contrast met de doom in ‘Dichotomy’ is groot.
Takiaya ’s woorden over eenzaamheid in ‘Grief’ zijn nauwelijks te verstaan. Maat haar stem vormt een eenheid met de instrumenten. De nummers zijn goed verdeeld over het album dat zowel klassiek georiënteerde delen als (langzame) doom-metal bevat. De groezelige sound en sludgy gitaar overheersen zeker niet. De vervormde zang en het drumwerk zijn in dienst van het geheel. Je hoeft niet te begrijpen waar de nummers over gaan, je voelt wel de verschillen in sfeer. Wie de doom- metal normaal links laat liggen, zou toch eens moeten luisteren naar ‘Insatiable’.
