Colin Blunstone became well known in the 1960s with his band The Zombies, with which he had several hits. After about seven years, the band ended, but Colin remained active in music. He released solo albums, and was a regular guest singer for the Alan Parsons Project. Perhaps partly due to his part, ‘Old and Wise’ (1982) became a big hit. The Zombies returned (at intervals), this resulted in a couple of new albums. Although Colin is almost 80, he continues to perform. On Easter Monday, he and his band were at De Bosuil, Weert (The Netherlands).
Altameda
The support act was Altameda, this Canadian band consists of singer/songwriter Troy Snaterse and multi-instrumentalist Erik M. Grice. The latter was unable to attend; he was replaced by singer/keyboardist Jo Dudderidge (Later Youth). Right on time, this duo appeared on stage. After a brief greeting, they started with ‘Hot Nights’. Guitarist/lead singer Troy has a pleasant voice and a clear pronunciation. The distribution/ interplay between guitar and keys was good. One of their new singles is called “Body Spray”, during the harmony vocals, their voices coloured beautifully together. This was one of the songs in which Troy also played harmonia.
The applause showed that the audience appreciated Altameda’s calm, atmospheric songs. There was almost no chatter, which not only says something about the respectful audience, but also about the performance of this twosome.
Colin Blunstone
After a break of about half an hour, Colin Blunstone, and band were greeted by loud applause. The first song was ‘She Loves the Way They Love Her’. The love with which Colin was on stage was immediately apparent. He still reached the high notes. Guitarist Søren Koch had a part in backing vocals. Dave Bainbridge’s piano sounds swirled through beautifully.
Several people in the audience spontaneously sang along to the chorus of ‘Andorra’, much to Colin’s delight. You could also see the other band members enjoying playing. Bassist Chas Cronk was a bit more subdued, but you could hear his part well. On ‘Now I Know I’ll Never Get Over You’, no fewer than four men had backing vocals. Only drummer Steve Rodford had no backing vocals. He played fine, everything was in service of the music.
Percussionist Dean Anshutz regularly played two instruments at once. During ‘Time to Move’, for instance, he was dancing while playing.
The Zombies
“Hung Up on a Dream” started with piano playing, Colin sang with passion. The audience was as good as silent. Two more songs by The Zombies followed: ‘This Will Be Our Year’, and the hit ‘Time of the Season’. Again, the blend of voices stood out positively. The audience clapped and sang with the “Aahhh”. A large number of people knew the entire lyrics. During an extended instrumental piece, Colin stood with his eyes closed, enjoying the Hammond playing, among other things. The extended applause was well-deserved. Before the start of ‘Keep the Curtains Closed Today’, a number of band members left the stage. Dave and Søren played acoustic guitar. Colin sang this tender song with inspiration; people listened breathlessly. ‘Misty Roses’ also had an acoustic start, the other band members returned to play along with the rest of the song. Throughout, the tempo and volume changes were well played. The warm sounds of Søren’s guitar playing once again came out beautifully in ‘Any Other Way’.
Old and Wise
The quiet way the light changed suited the setting of this evening. The band had brought along their own sound engineer (Dale Hanson). The sound was well balanced, the volume suited the music. In ‘Say You Don’t Mind’, Colin received, quite rightly, extra applause. When he told something between songs, he was less easy to understand. The first notes of ‘Old and Wise’ were greeted with applause and cheers. Again, Colin impressed with his vocals. The wonderful, characteristic guitar playing was rewarded with intermediate applause. At the end of this song, the applause was so extensive that it looked like a final applause.
‘She’s Not There’ (The Zombies 1964) was fully sung along, by ‘young and old’, the band members visibly enjoyed it. After extended applause, the band left the stage. Before they had even all left, “We want more” was already being yelled.
I Want Some More
The encore consisted of ‘Just Out of Reach’ and ‘I Want Some More’. Especially with the latter, the audience sang along. Most of them only with the wordless vocals. The atmosphere was joyful, both on stage and in the hall.
Not everything was completely flawless, and one could of course hear that Colin’s voice has aged a little. But that is allowed, and certainly has its charm. Deep respect for what he can still do, also in terms of performance. Moreover, the love for the music, the appreciation for the band members and the audience was beautiful to see.

Één van hun nieuwe singels heet ‘Body Spray’, tijdens de samenzang kleurden hun stemmen mooi bij elkaar. Dit was één van de nummers waarin Troy ook harmonia speelde.
Aan het applaus was te merken dat het publiek de kalme, sfeervolle nummers van Altameda kon waarderen. Er werd nauwelijks gepraat, dat zegt niet alleen iets over het respectvolle publiek, maar ook over de performance van dit tweetal.
Colin Blunstone
Na een pauze van ongeveer een half uur werd Colin Blunstone, en band met luid applaus begroet. Het eerste nummer was ‘She Loves the Way They Love Her’. De liefde waarmee Colin op het podium stond was meteen zichtbaar. De hoge tonen haalde hij nog steeds. Gitarist Søren Koch had een aandeel in de achtergrondzang. De pianoklanken van Dave Bainbridge dwarrelde er mooi doorheen.
Een aantal mensen uit het publiek zong het refrein van ‘Andorra’ spontaan mee, dit tot groot plezier van Colin. Ook bij de overige bandleden zag je dat ze met plezier speelden. Bassist Chas Cronk was wat meer ingetogen, maar je hoorde zijn aandeel goed. In ‘Now I Know I’ll Never Get Over You’ hadden maar liefst vier mannen de achtergrondzang. Alleen drummer Steve Rodford had geen achtergrondzang. Hij speelde prima, alles was in dienst van de muziek.

The Zombies

Er volgen nog twee nummers van The Zombies: ‘This Will Be Our Year’, en de hit ‘Time of the Season’. Weer viel de blend van stemmen positief op. Het publiek klapte en zong met het ‘Aahhh’. Een groot aantal mensen kende de hele tekst. Tijdens een uitgebreid instrumentaal stuk stond Colin met gesloten ogen te genieten, onder andere van het Hammond spel. Het uitgebreide applaus was dik verdiend. Voor aanvang van ‘Keep the Curtains Closed Today’ verliet een aantal bandleden het podium. Dave en Søren speelden akoestisch gitaar. Colin zong dit tedere nummer met bezieling, men luisterde ademloos. Ook ‘Misty Roses’ heeft een akoestische start, de overige bandleden keerden terug om de rest van het nummer mee te spelen. Overal werden de tempo-en volumewisselingen goed gespeeld. De warme klanken van het gitaarspel van Søren kwam nogmaals mooi naar voren in ‘Any Other Way’.
Old and Wise
De rustige manier waarop het licht wisselde sloot aan bij de setting van deze avond. De band had hun eigen geluidsman (Dale Hanson) meegenomen. Het geluid was goed in balans, het volume paste bij de muziek. In ‘Say You Don’t Mind’ kreeg Colin, heel terecht, extra applaus. Als hij tussen de nummers door iets vertelde, was hij minder goed te verstaan. De eerste tonen van ‘Old and Wise’ werden met applaus en gejuich begroet. Weer maakte Colin indruk met zijn zang. Het gave, kenmerkende gitaarspel werd beloond met een tussentijds applaus. Na afloop van dit nummer was het applaus zo uitgebreid, dat het wel op een slot applaus leek.
‘She’s Not There’ (The Zombies 1964) werd volop meegezongen, door “jong en oud”, de bandleden genoten er zichtbaar van. Na een uitgebreid applaus verliet de band het podium. Ze waren nog niet eens allemaal weg, of weg werd al “We want more” geroepen.
I Want Some More
De toegift bestond uit ‘Just Out of Reach’ en ‘I Want Some More’. Vooral met deze laatste zong het publiek mee. De meeste alleen met de woordeloze zang. De sfeer was vrolijk, zowel op de bühne als in de zaal.
Niet alles was helemaal zuiver, en men hoorde natuurlijk dat Colin’s stem iets ouder geworden is. Maar dat mag, en heeft zeker zijn charme. Diep respect voor wat hij nog kan, ook qua performance. Bovendien was de liefde voor de muziek, de waardering voor de bandleden en het publiek mooi om te zien.
