Hteththemeth is a Romanian avant-garde progressive metal band. Avant-garde metal is an experimental style of metal. It is typified by unusual sounds, instruments and song structures. Their new album ‘Telluric Inharmonies’ also features many calm, spherical parts mixed with classical, electronic and some metal elements. The story of this concept album is: After man was created, the angels gathered in heaven. With a game, they wanted to restore the balance on earth. Man has to endure all kinds of earthly challenges; the winners earn a place in eternity. ‘Telluric Inharmonies’ is the name for the pleasure and pain, passions and struggles, dreams and downfall .

Sampled sounds and Romanian spoken words of ‘A!’ is followed by very calm music. Just when you think an explosion of music is about to come, you hear the sound of a storm. Again there are the narrator’s words. The music gets a little more dramatic, but remains calm. The vocals are stacked very briefly, the music becomes surreal. The spoken words in English seem like a mix of a speech and a preach. The vocals are wordless, this opening track ends mysteriously.
Accompanied by a touch of music, the narrator delivers the story ‘A Sasea Zi.’ I don’t understand Romanian, but the intonation makes it nice to listen to. ‘Honest Lies’ has a gentle classical intro. The turn to metal is less majestic than expected. This track seems to fade out slowly, but gets a very different continuation. The vocals sound distorted, the music is a fine blend of styles. The turns flow into each other, the vocals are stacked at times.
‘I Wanted You All’ has a slightly classical, instrumental start. The vocals are calm, sometimes with whispered words in the background. Almost imperceptibly, the music becomes slightly more dramatic, the blend between the instruments is very good, and balanced throughout with the vocals.

Vocal tracks are interspersed with ‘’storytelling” tracks, these are almost all in Romanian. The atmosphere in ‘I Buy Her Presence’ is lighter-hearted. The track seems to end, but it’s a twist. Just after this, the tempo and volume increase, but the atmosphere remains more or less the same. ‘The Odyssey Of Nothing’ has a beautiful intro, the music crawling under my skin. The melange between the guitar playing and the other instruments is phenomenal. The vocals are gentle and calm, there are some changes in the music. Although there are metal elements; even this track remains quite calm. As the tempo quickens, the light music remains present.

‘Lumi’ is one of the few tracks where a female voice speaks. Perhaps the most rousing parts can be heard in ‘A Burning Desire’. Played live, this is likely to create interaction with the audience. At times, the tempo is fast, but again there is the melange with lighter music. ‘Adoriel Is Watching’ is followed by the last song, ‘O!’. This starts with the sound of footsteps and spoken words in English, accompanied by a touch of atmospheric music. The music remains special and mysterious , the whispered words are largely in English.
The manner of narration is captivating…what else is going to happen? After a few whispered words, it is, at first, unexpectedly silent.

The difference in volume between the metal and the subdued parts could have been a bit larger. That would have made for more impact, and a better perception of the story. Regular vocals are stacked, the voices together forming a beautiful blend throughout. In addition, vocals and music form a constant harmony. Moreover, there is also a good relationship between rhythm and melody. Both the intros and outros are put together with care.

Hteththemeth is een Roemeense avant-garde progressive metal band. Avant-gardemetal is een experimentele vorm van metal. Kenmerkend zijn de ongewone geluiden, instrumenten en songstructuren. Ook op hun nieuwe album ‘Telluric Inharmonies’ zijn er veel kalme, sferische delen te horen, vermengd met klassiek, elektronica wat metal elementen. Het verhaal van dit conceptalbum is: Nadat de mens geschapen was, verzamelden de engelen zich in de hemel. Met een spel wilden ze het evenwicht op aarde herstellen. De mens moet allerlei aardse uitdagingen doorstaan, de winnaars verdienen een plaats in de eeuwigheid. ‘Telluric Inharmonies’ is de naam voor het plezier en pijn, passies en strijd, dromen en ondergang .

Gesampelde geluiden en Roemeens gesproken woorden van ‘A!’ wordt gevolgd door hele kalme muziek. Net als je denkt dat er een explosie van muziek komt, hoor je het geluid van een storm. Weer zijn er de woorden van de verteller. De muziek wordt wat dramatischer, maar blijft kalm. De zang is heel even gestapeld, de muziek wordt surrealistisch. De gesproken woorden in het Engels lijken een mix van een speech en een preek. De zang is woordeloos, deze openingstrack eindigt mysterieus.
Begeleid door een beetje muziek brengt de verteller het verhaal ‘A Sasea Zi. Ik versta geen Roemeens, maar door de intonatie is het mooi om naar te luisteren. ‘Honest Lies’ heeft een zacht klassiek intro. De wending naar de metal is minder groots dan verwacht. Deze track lijkt langzaam uit te doven, maar krijgt een heel ander vervolg. De zang klinkt vervormd, de muziek is een mooie melange van stijlen. De wendingen vloeien in elkaar over, de zang is soms gestapeld.
‘I Wanted You All’ heeft een licht klassieke, instrumentale start. De zang is kalm, soms met gefluisterde woorden op de achtergrond. Bijna ongemerkt wordt de muziek iets dramatischer, de blend tussen de instrumenten is zeer goed, en overal in balans met de zang.

Vocale tracks worden afgewisseld met “vertellende” tracks, deze zijn bijna allemaal in het Roemeens. De steer in ‘I Buy Her Presence’ is luchtig. De track lijkt te eindigen, maar het is een twist. Vlak hierna nemen tempo en volume toe, maar de sfeer blijft ongeveer hetzelfde. ’The Odyssey Of Nothing’ heeft een prachtig intro, de muziek kruipt onder mijn huid. De melange tussen het gitaarspel en de overige instrumenten is fenomenaal. De zang is zacht en kalm, er zijn enkele veranderingen in de muziek. Hoewel er metal elementen zijn; blijft ook deze track vrij kalm. Als het tempo versnelt, blijft de lichte muziek aanwezig.

‘Lumi’ is één van de weinige tracks waarin een damesstem het woord heeft. De meeste opzwepende delen zijn misschien wel te horen in ‘A Burning Desire’. Live gespeeld zal dit vast een interactie met het publiek op leveren. Met vlagen ligt het tempo hoog, maar ook nu is er de melange met lichtere muziek. Na ‘Adoriel Is Watching’ volgt alweer het laatste nummer: ‘O!’. Dit start met het geluid van voetstappen en gesproken woorden in het Engels, ondersteund met een vleugje sferische muziek. De muziek blijft bijzonder en mysterieus , de fluisterende woorden zijn grotendeels in het Engels.
De manier van vertellen is boeiend…wat gaat er nog meer gebeuren? Na enkele fluisterende woorden is het, in eerste instantie, onverwacht stil.

Het verschil in volume tussen de metal en de ingetogen delen had wat groter mogen zijn. Dat had gezorgd voor meer impact, en een betere beleving van het verhaal. Regelmatig is de zang gestapeld, de stemmen samen vormen overal een mooie blend. Daarnaast vormen zang en muziek een constante harmonie. Bovendien is er ook een goede verhouding tussen ritme en melodie. Zowel de intro’s als de outro’s zijn met zorg samen gesteld.
