Six years after “The Pure Shine,” Flaming Row releases “Keeper Of The Scriptures” (Hüterin Der Schriften). The standard version of this concept album contains two CDs with the English and German versions. More than 10 vocalists contributed to this album, including Magali (Maggy) Luyten (Ayreon, among others), Glynn Morgan (Threshold). The line-up of vocalists is in the German version is slightly different from the English version, more about that later. Many guest musicians play on the album, such as Joe Deninzon and Jens Kommnick. The guitar solos are by Eric Gillette and Arjen Lucassen, among others.
The story unfolds in the fantasy land of Mithila, with Gandhara as its capital. Gandhara is protected by Meera. Nita is the “Keeper of the Scriptures,” representing knowledge and culture. An unknown danger threatens this kingdom. Will the heroines succeed in protecting their heritage?

The sound of “Gandhara’s Legacy” reflects the fantasy world. The high vocals have their own unique sound. This track flows into “The Mesh,” which is a fantasy monster. Metal is mixed with various styles. The English vocals have a fierce, almost evil sound. The character of the monster is performed by Glynn Morgan. His voice represents the most significant difference from the other characters. The numerous changes in styles, and between the various instruments flow smoothly. The voices of the three vocalists blend beautifully. That blend is also beautiful in the German “Das Geflecht.” Here, Mathias Ruck takes on the part of this monster, his voice sounding less grim. In both versions, you sense from the vocals and music that a lot is happening, but it would be easier to understand the story if the lyrics had listed which character sings which part.
“An Invisible Bond” starts calmly. The extensive instrumental piece builds up to rock. Thus, this track ends very differently than it began. In ‘Nita – The Keeper’ you can hear no fewer than four vocalists, with the voices stacked at times. There are various (unexpected) breaks/changes in tempo, volume, and styles. Occasionally, you can detect Ayreon influences. During the faster parts, the drumming loses some of its dynamics. The calmer parts include the sounds of acoustic guitar. In addition, there are four cool, rocking guitar solos. The tempo is sometimes surprisingly slow in the heavy-sounding parts.

Metal singer Maggy Luyten can be heard in “Meera – The Guardian.” Not only her, but also the other characters sing their parts convincingly.
In ‘Mithila’s End’, the voice of ‘The Mesh’ can be heard again. Lighter sounds are interwoven between the metal, bringing back the special atmosphere that belongs to this fantasy land.
Despite the differences in timbre, the harmonies in ‘It Was Magic’ also form a beautiful blend. Suddenly, the music becomes heavier, and some of the vocals become rougher. For a moment, the tempo of the music is fast, and the low (bass) tones are cool. After a rather sudden ending, ‘Between Worlds’ follows. Here, Harriet Earis lets the peaceful, calm sounds of the harp be heard.

Part of the lyrics of “Hope For A Miracle” are filled with courage and confidence, but there also seems to be a hint of doubt. Both vocally and instrumentally, ‘The Last Stand’ is powerful. The music in ‘More Than Words’ is subdued, complemented by calm (polyphonic) vocals. Suddenly, the atmosphere changes, and you hear flute and violin, among other instruments. The album ends with ‘An Old Legend’.

In a couple of songs, the drumhead is quite tight, which gives a somewhat “bleak/chilly” sound, but otherwise it sounds very good. Partly due to the number of twists and turns/styles, and the contrasts in tempo and volume, there is a lot coming at you, yet everything remains in balance. Fans of heavy, complex prog music will definitely be happy with this! The special edition has 4 CDs and includes an instrumental version, among other things. Flaming Row – Keeper Of The Scriptures (Hüterin Der Schriften)

Zes jaar na ‘The Pure Shine’ lanceert Flaming Row verschijnt ‘Keeper Of The Scriptures’ (Hüterin Der Schriften). De standaard versie van dit conceptalbum bevat twee cd’s met daarop de Engelse en de Duitse uitvoering. Aan dit album werkten meer dan 10 vocalisten mee, waaronder Magali (Maggy)Luyten (o.a. Ayreon), Glynn Morgan (Threshold). De line-up van de vocalisten is bij de Duitse versie iets anders dan de Engelse versie, daarover later meer. Er spelen veel gasmuzikanten mee, zoals: Joe Deninzon, en Jens Kommnick. De gitaarsolo’s komen onder andere van Eric Gillette en Arjen Lucassen.
Het verhaal speelt zich af in het fantasieland Mithila, met als hoofdstad Gandhara. Deze wordt beschermd door Meera. Nita is de “Bewaarder van de Geschriften”, zoals kennis en cultuur. Een onbekende dreiging teistert dit koninkrijk, lukt het de heldinnen hun erfgoed te beschermen?

De klank van ‘Gandhara’s Legacy’ weerspiegelt de fantasie wereld. De hoge zang heeft een eigen kleur. Deze track vloeit over in ‘The Mesh’, dit is een fantasiemonster. Metal wordt met diverse stijlen gemend. De Engelstalige zang heeft een verbeten, bijna gemene klank. De rol van het monster wordt vertolkt Glynn Morgan. Zijn stem vormt het grootste verschil met de overige personages. De talloze veranderingen in stijlen, en tussen de verschillende instrumenten verlopen prima. De stemmen van de drie vocalisten vormen een mooie blend. Die blend is in het Duitse ‘Das Geflecht’ ook mooi. Hier neemt Mathias Ruck de rol van dit monster op zich, zijn stem klinkt minder grimmig. Bij beide versies merk je aan zang en muziek dat er heel wat gebeurt, maar je zou het verhaal makkelijker begrijpen als er bij de teksten had gestaan welk personage welk deel zingt.
‘An Invisible Bond’ start kalm. Het uitgebreide instrumentale stuk wordt opgebouwd naar rock. Zo eindigt deze track heel anders dan dat hij begon. In ’Nita – The Keeper’ hoor je maar liefst vier vocalisten, met vlagen zijn de stemmen gestapeld. Er zijn diverse (onverwachte) rusten/wendingen in tempo, volume en stijlen. Zo af en toe kun je Ayreon invloeden waarnemen. Tijdens de snellere stukken verliest het drumwerk wat dynamiek. De kalmere delen bevatten onder andere de klanken van akoestisch gitaar. Daarnaast zijn er vier gave, (rockende) gitaarsolo’s. Het tempo ligt in de zwaar klinkende delen soms verrassend laag.

Metal zangeres Maggy Luyten is te horen in ‘Meera – The Guardian’. Niet alleen zij, maar ook de andere personages zingen hun deel overtuigend.
In ‘Mithila’s End’ is de stem van ‘The Mesh’ weer te horen. Tussen de metal zijn er lichtere klanken verweven, daarmee komt de bijzondere sfeer terug die bij dit fantasieland hoort.
Ondanks de verschillen in klankkleur, vormt de samenzang ook in ‘It Was Magic’ een mooie blend. Plotseling wordt de muziek zwaarder, een deel van de zang wordt ruiger. Even ligt het tempo van de muziek hoog, de lage (bas)tonen zijn gaaf. Na een vrij plotseling eind volgt ‘Between Worlds’. Harriet Earis laat hier de vredige, kalme klanken van de harp horen.
Een deel van de tekst van ‘Hope For A Miracle’ is gevuld met moed en vertrouwen, maar er lijkt ook twijfel in door te klinken.
Zowel vocaal als instrumentaal is The Last Stand’ krachtig. De muziek in ‘More Than Words’ is ingetogen, de kalme (meerstemmige) zang sluit hier op aan. Ineens verandert de sfeer, je hoort onder ander fluit en viool. Het album eindigt met ‘An Old Legend’.

In een enkel nummer is het drumvel vrij strak gespannen, wat een wat killer geluid geeft, verder klinkt zeer goed. Mede door het aantal wendingen/stijlen, en de contrasten in tempo en volume, komt er veel op je af, toch blijft alles in balans. Hier wordt de liefhebber van zware, complexe prog zeker blij van! De special edition heeft 4 CD’s, en bevat onder andere een instrumentale versie. Deze kun je beluisteren en kopen op Bandcamp.
