The young members of Salamirecorder (Austria) blend various styles and decades, creating a mix that includes garage punk, psychedelia and rock ’n’ roll. Add to that Felix Schnabl’s distinctive voice and the vintage recording gear, and a unique sound emerges.
Right from the instrumental intro to ‘Brothers & Sisters’, the vintage (muddy) sound is quite noticeable; together with the music, this evokes the atmosphere of a very old LP.
This sound suits the style of the music, but it is emphatically present. This comes to the fore particularly during the louder vocal parts, giving Felix’s voice a sharp edge.
The largely rousing tracks contain pleasant, elaborate instrumental passages. This invites you to turn up the volume, but that’s not an option due to the poor sound quality. Parts of the music are predictable, but there are also some lovely surprises. The retro atmosphere is good, so in that respect ‘Inside The Cage’ is a good album.
