class="wp-image-8277"/>

‘Empty’ is the new album by singer/multi-instrumentalist Kristoffer Gildenlöw.
The quiet start of ‘Time To Turn The Page’ touches me immediately. The vocals sound distorted and are sometimes quite sharp and cynical in sound. Suddenly, the tempo and volume of the music are higher, a cynical laugh is heard. The music remains intense, this flows into a minimalist played part, the music getting under my skin. In ‘The End Of The Run’, the creator keeps trying to help the human being. Man knows what is right, but keeps making wrong choices. Kristoffer’s quiet vocals sound sombre. The calm music contains, almost unnoticed, a fair amount of (vocal) details. At some point, there seems to be some frustration in Kristoffer’s voice. During an instrumental piece that follows this, the volume is turned up for a moment. Very slowly, this beautifully constructed song extinguishes, as if nothing more exists.

‘He’s Not Me’ is about the constant search for who we are. The “constant” rhythm suits the continuous search. Again, the (stacked) vocals form an ultimate balance with the music. Moreover, all the instruments are in perfect harmony with each other.
Both the rhythm and the melody make ‘Black & White’ have a pleasant flow. This song is an ode to the heroes of the past who were important to humanity. Until the last second, you can hear gentle details. ‘Down We Go’ also has a very tender start, the sober vocals fitting the mood. Kristoffer explains that in our selfish society, we like to point an accusing finger at someone else. The moment we stand in front of our creator, it turns out we have not seen our own mistakes. The (stacked) vocals and music remain in roughly the same, pleasant flow, which is how this song seems to end. But there follows a cool turn to a compelling instrumental piece, with fantastic guitar playing. Despite the contrasts with “the first part” of this song, the unity remains.

A person is at the end of his/her life in “Means To An End”. This person is ready for the end, yet the fire continues to burn, and with it the desire to stay alive. The listener is free to give their own interpretation to the sudden end of this song. Two people dream in the melancholic ‘Beautiful Decay’ of leaving their small village and following their dreams. Years pass, until it is too late to go. The dreams die away…
Soft, spherical sounds of ‘Empty’ flow back and forth in the headphones. Slowly, volume and disquiet increase… and decrease again. People keep asking for help for the misery they have caused themselves. The creator is in a dilemma: is he going to delete humanity to start all over again? Or will he leave everything as it is? He feels he is failing, he feels empty. You can hear the despondency in the vocals. You feel the emotion in the instrumental part too. The guitar playing is fabulous, the fade out could perhaps have lasted a little longer.

The lyrics are sometimes hard to fathom. But you feel and hear that the way of singing constantly forms a unity with the music. The music itself is also fantastic: strings, the rhythm section, guitars and keys, everything is balanced with each other. Because of its sobriety, ‘Empty’ may need some time to grow. The music is generally calm, yet you keep hearing new details. The tempo and volume changes are sublimely added. ‘Empty’ is an album to enjoy in peace.

(90/100)(New Joke Music)

Social media:

‘He’s Not Me’ gaat over de constante zoektocht naar wie we zijn.

Vanwege de soberheid moet ‘Empty’ misschien even groeien.

(90/100)(New Joke Music)

‘Empty’ is the new album by singer/multi-instrumentalist Kristoffer Gildenlöw.The quiet start of ‘Time To Turn The Page’ touches me immediately.
