The multi-talented Clive Nolan plays in several bands and has made a number of solo albums. He is also a composer\/producer of musicals and projects, such as Imaginaerium. This was founded by singer Laura Piazzai, and guitarist Eric Bouillette. In 2022, they released ‘The Rise of<\/a> <\/a>Medici<\/a>‘. Eric passed away before the release. Friday 26 January was the live premiere of this rock opera at the sold-out Parkvilla Theatre in Alphen aan den Rijn (The Nethelands). This was made possible by: Serious Music Alphen a\/d Rijn and Arne van Os van den Abeelen (Mr Bowler Music Agency).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The first part consisted of acoustic versions from Clive’s impressive career. Laura Piazzai had the lead vocals in ‘Sacrifice’ from ‘Strangers On A Train’. Her vocals were not flawless everywhere. Clive played keyboard and had the backing vocals. The harmony vocals were good, and Laura sang the gentler parts beautifully. This was followed by two Arena songs. First, ‘How this it come to this’, followed by ‘Tinder Box’. Andy Sears immediately sang with passion, which became more intense as the song followed. Despite the rather short rehearsal time, guitarist Simone Milliava and Clive were well in tune. This could be seen in their subtle non-verbal communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The Mortal Light<\/strong>
Before the start of ‘Sensing a Presence’ (Strangers On A Train), Laura apologised for her voice, caused by a cold. She received applause for her explanation, and immediately seemed a lot more relaxed. The audience spontaneously clapped along with Simone’s guitar playing. One of the many musicals Clive has written is SHE. From this, Marijke Groenendaal sang ‘Closer’. Her subdued performance matched her classically trained voice. Before each song, Clive told extensive anecdotes, or a long introduction about the next song.
The duet ‘Legend of the Unicorn’ comes from the musical ‘King’s Ransom’. Despite the differences, Marijke and Laura’s voices matched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

‘Alchemy’ is a musical, Andy appeared in the costume of Lord Henry Jagman. He performed ‘The End Justifies the Means’ with great intensity. ‘The Mortal Light’ is a new theatre production by Clive. Of this, Andy sang ‘Trust’. ‘Don’t forget to breathe’ (Arena) was a duet between Laura and Clive. Laura’s ssubdued sung part was very good. She also managed several higher notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The Rise of Medici<\/strong>
After the break, ‘The Rise of Medici’ was played integrally and nonstop. This rock opera is about the Italian banking family De Medici: Cosimo (1389 – 1464) and his wife Contessina.
Through a tape, the overture ‘Festina Lente’ sounded, with the singing of the monks, the church bell and orchestral elements. Marijke played Lucrezia (great-granddaughter of Contessina and Cosimo). She was the narrator of the story. At the beginning of ‘Duty of Love’, the church bell was still ringing. Contessina (played by Laura) told of her high-class background and the responsibilities that come with it. Her pronunciation was clear, now there was not much noticeable of her voice problems. All the music ran along via tape, except for Simone’s electric guitar playing.
Cosimo ( performed by Andy) and Contessina sang about the importance of their marriage in ‘House of dreams’. Cosimo used facial and physical expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The Tide will Change<\/strong>
Clive was in the role of Rinaldo; his hatred of Cosimo was evident in ‘The Tide will Change’. You felt his hate in words he sang loudly. In gentler sung parts, the desire to destroy Cosimo’s influence and dominance was heard. The choral singing of ‘Never Close your Eyes’ changed the atmosphere. Lucrezia sang with her classical voice about the jealousy against the banking family.
Contessina appeared in a different gown for ‘Glass Throne’, she sang about the beautiful aspects of wealthy life, about the rumours and the threats. The music began subdued, but took a rocking turn. Rinaldo accused Cosimo of betrayal in ‘Treachery’. Contessina supported her husband. Cosimo called out that Rinaldo was telling lies. The three characters sang against one another impressively. At other times, they sang “united. The balance between the vocals and music was very good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Will I Never Return<\/strong>
Lucrezia “told” in ‘Fall from Grace’ that Cosimo used his connections and money to convert his death warrant into an exile. Cosimo complained in ‘Will I Never Return’ about his unjust banishment, which forced him to leave Florence. Moreover, loneliness was weighing him down. Was the death penalty perhaps better after all, will he ever return? You could hear and feel his despair. The guitar solo formed an ultimate harmony with the orchestral parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Music from centuries ago formed the intro to ‘Fortunes Reverse’, in which Cosimo returns after one year in exile. Rinaldo saw that Cosimo’s condemnation had brought him few benefits. Contessina addressed Rinaldo on his mistakes. During the moments when Contessina looked at Rinaldo, she brought the storyline well to life. That faded when she looked at her tablet to read the lyrics. This fantastically performed number flowed into ‘Return of the Medici’. In it, the monks and the main characters wondered how all this could happen. After the monks’ Latin singing (via tape), Lucrezia started with her view of the past year. Followed by Contessina, Cosimo and Rinaldo. The voices of these four vocalists sometimes went against each other, but formed a beautiful harmony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legacy<\/strong>
Years later, when some of the main characters were no longer alive, Contessina looked back on her life. Her calm singing in ‘Legacy’ was accompanied by a touch of “ancient” music. A few times an interchange with rock followed. After a good vocal part by Contessina, all the characters sang their final part. A well-deserved standing ovation followed immediately after the last note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

This fantastic opera deserves a mega production, passing through many more theatres. Complete with historical costumes, headset microphones, a choir, orchestra and scenery. This would make the story come to life completely. But even with limited resources, this rock opera was absolutely credible. Well done!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De live premiere van \u2018The Rise of Medici\u2019 verdient een vervolg.<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

De veelzijdige Clive Nolan speelt in verschillende bands en maakte diverse solo albums. Daarnaast is hij componist\/producer van musicals en projecten, zoals Imaginaerium. Dit werd opgericht door zangeres Laura Piazzai, en gitarist Eric Bouillette. In 2022 verscheen \u2019The Rise of Medici<\/a>. Eric overleed nog voor de release. Vrijdag 26 januari was de live premi\u00e8re van deze rock opera in het uitverkochte Parkvilla Theater in Alphen aan den Rijn. Dit werd mogelijk gemaakt door: Serious Music Alphen a\/d Rijn en Arne van Os van den Abeelen (Mr Bowler Music Agency).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het eerste deel bestond uit akoestische versies uit de imposante carri\u00e8re van Clive. Laura Piazzai had de leadzang in \u2018Sacrifice\u2019 van \u2018Strangers On A Train\u2019. Haar zang was niet overal zuiver. Clive speelde keyboard en had de backing vocals. De samenzang was goed, de zachtere delen zong Laura mooi. Hierna volgden twee Arena nummers. Eerst \u2018How dit it come to this\u2019, gevolgd door \u2018Tinder Box\u2019. Andy Sears zong meteen met bezieling, dat werd intenser naarmate het nummer volgde. Ondanks de vrij korte repetitietijd waren gitarist Simone Milliava en Clive goed op elkaar ingespeeld. Dat was te zien aan hun subtiele non-verbale communicatie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The Mortal Light<\/strong>
Voor aanvang van \u2018Sensing a Presence\u2019 (Strangers On A Train), bood Laura haar excuses aan voor haar stem, veroorzaakt door verkoudheid. Ze kreeg applaus voor haar uitleg, en leek meteen een stuk minder gespannen. Het publiek klapte spontaan mee met het gitaarspel van Simone. E\u00e9n van de vele musicals die Clive heeft geschreven is SHE. Hiervan zong Marijke Groenendaal \u2018Closer\u2019. Haar ingetogen performance sloot aan bij haar klassiek geschoolde stem. Voor ieder nummer vertelde Clive uitgebreide anekdotes, of een lange introductie over het volgende nummer.
Het duet \u2018Legend of the Unicorn\u2019 komt van de musical \u2018King\u2019s Ransom\u2019. Ondanks de verschillen pasten de stemmen van Marijke en Laura bij elkaar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rise of Medici<\/strong>
Na de pauze werd \u2018The Rise of Medici\u2019 integraal en non stop gespeeld. Deze rockopera gaat over de Italiaanse bankiersfamilie De Medici: Cosimo (1389 – 1464) en zijn vrouw Contessina.
Via een tape klonk de ouverture \u2018Festina Lente\u2019, met het gezang van de monniken, de kerkklok en de orkestrale elementen. Marijke speelde Lucrezia (achterkleindochter van Contessina en Cosimo). Zij was de verteller van het verhaal. Aan het begin van \u2018Duty of Love\u2019 luidde de kerkklok nog steeds. Contessina (gespeeld door Laura) vertelde over haar hoge afkomst en de verplichtingen die erbij horen. Haar uitspraak was duidelijk, er was nu weinig te merken van haar stemproblemen. Alle muziek liep via een tape mee, behalve het elektrisch gitaarspel van Simone.
Cosimo (vertolkt door Andy) en Contessina zongen in \u2019House of dreams\u2019 over het belang van hun huwelijk. Cosimo gebruikte gelaats- en fysieke expressie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The Tide will Change<\/strong>
Clive speelde Rinaldo, zijn haat tegen Cosimo werd duidelijk in \u2019The Tide will Change. Je voelde zijn afkeer in woorden die hij luid zong. In zachter gezongen delen klonk het verlangen om Cosimo\u2019s invloed en macht te vernietigen. Door de koorzang van \u2018Never Close your Eyes\u2019 veranderde de sfeer. Lucrezia zong met haar klassieke stem over de jaloezie tegen over de bankiersfamilie.
Contessina verscheen in een andere japon voor \u2018Glass Throne\u2019, ze zong over de mooie dingen van het rijke leven, over de geruchten en de dreigingen. De muziek begon ingetogen, maar kreeg een rockende wending. Rinaldo beschuldigde Cosimo in \u2018Treachery\u2019 van verraad. Contessina steunde haar man. Cosimo riep dat Rinaldo leugens vertelde. De drie personages zongen op een indrukwekkende manier tegen elkaar in. Op andere momenten zongen \u201cop \u00e9\u00e9n lijn\u201d. De balans tussen de zang en muziek was zeer goed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Will I Never Return<\/strong>
Lucrezia \u201cvertelde\u201d in \u2018Fall from Grace\u2019 dat Cosimo zijn connecties en geld gebruikte om zijn doodvonnis om te zetten in een verbanning. Cosimo beklaagde zich in het \u2018Will I Never Return\u2019 over zijn onterechte verbanning, waardoor hij Florence moest verlaten. Bovendien viel de eenzaamheid hem zwaar. Was de doodstraf misschien toch beter, zal hij ooit terug keren? Je hoorde en voelde zijn wanhoop. De gitaarsolo vormde een ultieme harmonie met de orkestrale delen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Muziek van eeuwen geleden vormde het intro van \u2018Fortunes Reverse\u2019, waarin Cosimo na \u00e9\u00e9n jaar ballingschap terugkeert. Rinaldo zag dat de veroordeling van Cosimo hem weinig voordelen had opgeleverd. Contessina sprak Rinaldo op zijn fouten aan. Op de momenten dat Contessina naar Rinaldo keek bracht ze de verhaallijn goed tot leven. Dat vervaagde toen ze naar haar tablet keek om de tekst te lezen. Dit fantastisch uitgevoerd nummer liep over in \u2018Return of the Medici\u2019. Hierin vroegen de monniken en de hoofdpersonen zich af hoe dit allemaal kon gebeuren. Na de Latijnse zang van de monniken (via tape), startte Lucrezia met haar kijk op het afgelopen jaar. Gevolgd door Contessina, Cosimo en Rinaldo. De stemmen van deze vier vocalisten gingen soms tegen elkaar in, maar vormden een mooie harmonie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legacy<\/strong>
Jaren later, toen een aantal hoofdpersonen niet meer leefden, keek Contessina terug op haar leven. Haar kalme zang in \u2018Legacy\u2019 werd begeleid door een vleugje \u201ceeuwenoude\u201d muziek. Een paar keer volgde er een wisselwerking met rock. Na een goed vocaal deel van Contessina zongen alle personages hun slotdeel. Direct na de laatste noot volgde een welverdiende staande ovatie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Deze fantastische opera verdient een mega productie, langs veel meer theaters. Compleet met historische kostuums, headset microfoons, een koor, orkest en decor. Zo zou het verhaal helem\u00e1\u00e1l tot leven komen. Maar ook met beperkte middelen was deze rockopera absoluut geloofwaardig.
